    great test and awesome that you switch mics as not many reviewers do that. The mics do change the recording character a lot. So for me, G4 + ME-2 > G4 + Rode = GO + ME-2 > GO + ME-2. The rode combination sounds muffled compared to the sennheiser and it's not just the mic but the system too.

      Thanks t0nyxgq, glad you liked the testing. I agree, the mics make the most difference in the overall system. I also really like the analog quality of the Sennheiser over the Rode digital system.

      For the rest of the video, I used a Rode NTG-5 boom mic. It gives me much better audio than any of my lavalier mics.

    Thanks for the helpful video. It seems that the wireless go only supplies power to the mics up to 3v, is there any degradation in sound quality? I have an mke2 and like the me2, these mics seem to require a 7.5v power supply. I am concerned about any sound quality degradation due to lack of power...and according to a youtube video by "The Three Techs", Wireless Go recommends 3v DPA mics. I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks!

      @toddb7948  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent points Aji_Sanma Sanka! I had not looked at the voltage requirements of the ME-2 or the MKE 2 - which both show 7.5V as their operating voltage. Interestingly, I looked up the specs of my MixPre 6 and it also outputs 3V. I have another generic lavalier mic I picked up on Amazon and it requires 3-5 volts. My guess is that as long as the voltage is sufficient to power the microphone, it should work and there should not be any audio quality issues.

      @@toddb7948 Your video is very helpful as I'm considering purchasing a Wireless Go 2 ! The microphone voltage issue was important to me. Because I have a ZOOM F2-BT (2.5v) with 32bit recorder and when I connect the me2 (7.5v), I get the great sound of the me2 but I keep getting a "geeee" noise. I am thinking it is probably due to the plug in power not matching, because when I disconnected the me2 from the F2 it still made the noise. Recording technique is a very difficult task for an amateur like me lol. Thank you!

      For my regular audio, I was using a Rode NTG5 and a Sound Devices Mix-Pre 6. During post, I normalize the levels and equalize to remove some of the poor acoustics in my room.
      I didnt do any processing of the wireless audio systems to allow a better comparison of each systems output.

    Great test! The entire Rhode system mic and transmitter sounds warmer and natural. The Seinhiser sound brighter and brittle like there’s too much high end. With eq you can easily remove mid freq on the Rhode Go to open up the vocals.

    I was putting Vegas odds on Sennheiser. I could clearly hear a difference between the two and even with the mics switched that quality followed. I came from Boya, Comica and almost purchased the Rode but I wanted the Sennheiser. I just couldn't shell out $800. Thankfully I found a used set set for $300 and jumped on them. The only draw back it came with no instructions. TH-cam her I come. Once I figured out how to set them up its a breeze. I especially like how I can set, I think, the RF to lower background noise. Sennheiser has a more natural sound almost like the argument vinyl vs digital. Vinyl has a much richer sound you cant get from digital IMO I love my Sennheiser and wouldn't change for anything, My audio has richly improved for my vids. Great point and straight forward heck I'll sub. curious to see future vids. Welcome to TH-cam.

    Sennheiser was way better with it's original mic sencond sennheiser with rode mic. Wow rode transmitter / reciver has some strange sound. Would love it if you try the g4 with a primo em172 or primo em258 based microphone.
    Great video! Really helpful.

    • @toddb7948

      Thanks and glad the video was helpful. Sennheiser makes some of the best microphones in the industry. They do a great job of pairing their microphones with their receivers.
      The Rode wireless GO was a first generation wireless mic. I think they made a lot of improvements with their latest versions. My next wireless mic will likely be the DJI Mic. I think they sound better than the Rode offerings and the charging case sells it for me.
      I am not familiar with the Primo Microphones. I will make sure and check them out.

    Very interesting test. I have the Rode Wireless Go II with the Rode Lav II, but need a cardioid Lav, which Rode doesn't offer. I've been considering the Sennheiser ME 4, but have not been sure if the bias voltage of the Go II (apparently 4V) is enough to drive the ME 4 that according to B&H requires 10V. On the other hand, the ME 2 shouldn't work either, requiring 7.5V, but apparently does, so who knows...

    • @toddb7948
      @toddb7948  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Jorgen. I have always wondered if my Wireless GO would power some of the microphones that require higher bias. So far, all of the ones tried have worked. My only concern has been the audio impact on using a lower than recommended bias voltage. Checking the various microphone audio characteristics using different bias voltages would make an interesting video. I know I would watch those tests.

    Here's my takes on wireless systems. I don't know the specs on the Rode but I've had an earlier version of the Sennheiser and top end Telex system. The Sennheiser and Telex work ok for non critical voice work but if you were to record say a high school band with the wireless (the whole band and not a single instrument) you would definitely not want to use an analog wireless. You will hear the compounding when say a tympani is playing. You would hear a higher frequency sound vary in level as the tympani sound gets quieter. For a real test, play some music through each system (would need a 40db pad or such before going into the transmitter) and compare the sound to the original wired sound. Like I said, wireless works with voice as the voice can cover up most of the compounding. What's happening is that one is trying to shove a 45 db SN ratio and mask it with compounding.

    • @toddb7948
      @toddb7948  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the input Keith. Wireless systems are generally a compromise. You definitely gain flexibility but lose some fidelity. If I was recording anything other than voices and was able to lock down a position, I would go with a wired microphone. Testing a wireless system using music is an interesting suggestion. I wonder if anyone has used that method?

    Which is Better between Sony UWP D21 vs Sennheiser EW 112P G4

    • @toddb7948
      @toddb7948  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a hard question to answer. I have only read one review and the reviewer raved about ease of setup and quality. I think both the Sony and Sennheiser would work well for most setups. One feature I like on the Sony is the ability to power through USB. This would allow for longer battery life and more options for powering the receiver either on camera or in an audio bag. I hadn’t really looked at the Sony before but now plan on checking it out.

    I have watched many TH-cam video's, and I would rate yours as good as the best in content, quality, and professionalism! I loved the way you compared the units. You did a great job! I have heard that the Sennheiser cannot handle two separate inputs to the receiver at the same time. If true, I think that it would make it difficult to do live interviews between a two people interview. Can you clear this up? I think that the Sennheiser is a higher quality unit, but the the money, the Rode is magnificent buy for the consumer on a tight budget. However, I also have heard that sound quality is far more important then video quality, so it might be worth stretching the budget, and purchasing the Sennheiser.

    • @MikeHageman
      @MikeHageman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Sennhieser set is by far the better system in all regards: sound quality, headroom, dependability, drop outs, range, etc.
      But yes, it is a one audio channel system. If you want to use more than one mic, you have to mix them with an external mixer before going into the transmitter.
      You will be shocked if you do an audio spectrum analysis of the 2,4 GHz systems…

    • @toddb7948
      @toddb7948  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alan, thanks for the feedback, it's very much appreciated. As Mike mentions in his reply above, the Sennheiser is a one-channel audio system. For a two person interview, you could use the Sennheiser with a single boom mic but a better solution would be to use a separate wireless mic on each person. This allows you much more flexibility in post as you can individually tailor the sound for each person. From a purely price standpoint, the Rode is a fantastic value for the features and quality it delivers and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone on a budget.

      @@MikeHageman Hi Mike, if I want to use the Sennheiser and use 2 mics, can I have one receiver and two mics. Or do I need to buy 2 mics and 2 receivers? Thank you

    • @MikeHageman
      @MikeHageman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RodrigoCanelas Hi, you need one receiver for each transmitter. All professional units work this way. Some manufacturers like Shure do sell dual and even quad receiver units with 2 resp. 4 channels.
      Some real high-end units are modular. So separate receivers modules in a rack unit.
      Even the digital ones (digital audio, NOT WiFi (digital) transmission, are single, dual or quad in one unit.
      For ENG work or interviews you indeed need more receivers or one wireless set and one wired.
      As I mentioned: mixing is done outside the receivers or just record in a stereo or multitrack unit.
      Hope this helps.

    Hey Todd. Good video and way to work. I have one thing though that I don’t hear and that is pretty important to me. First; I have use sennheiser with a lot of love for over 15 years and been through all the ew series. The thing that always annoyed me is the very obvious high end companding that goes on. It’s just unnatural. The rode (I am using go 2) does not have this and sounds a lot more natural. So, although the sennheiser is a bit brighter and sounds more forward it is not the most natural.
    Also, the go lavalier is awful. I agree.
    I just switched to sennheiser ew-d which is a lot (A LOT) better than the G4.

    Thank you for this video, however!I currently worked on a reality TV project where it was mandatory that we had to conceal microphone inside clothing of the casts which was very difficult with sennheiser due to the size of the transmitter and then I had to go on research and stumbled on the rode wireless go2, which was perfect to conceal due to the size but then the overall audio which wasn't bad but can't be compared to the sennheiser counterpart, I am now thinking of falling back to my sennheisers for the 2nd season which is on the way or simply run ME2 on the rode go2 transmitters as against the Lavalier go for a better audio quality

    • @toddb7948
      @toddb7948  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Oladipupo! Great insight into real-world examples. I have not had to conceal the Sennheiser transmitters around talent. Normally, I use audio quality as the main criteria for choosing a wireless system. If I had to totally hide the transmitters, the wireless go or maybe the new DJI wireless mic might be a better choice and I would definitely match it up with a good quality lavalier mic. Thanks for commenting, good luck with season 2!
