He he! the right tutorial at the right time! Thank you for sharing :) LE: I used this tutorial to filter my data by the last X available days (which are with gaps in my data set). If I have 23Feb, 3Mar, 10Mar and 15Mar, the last 2 available days are 10&15Mar. First I transformed the dates into integer then wraped it into a Fixed calculation at date level in order to obtain a metric which will be the base value for Top N. Since the dates are always increasing, then my fake metric is also always increasing and it doesn't matter the by how much compared to a previous day. Thus I am using the "weight" of the date in the Top N.
Can I ask on more detailed condition ? I'm trying this but added 1 more filter of [Year], but seems like this parameter only works ABOVE the [Year] filter, which means, I want to find out top10 & bottom10 of each years, but the result of [Year] filter >> only filters AFTER the Top N, so only includes of 2~3 at last... can you help me how to change the filteration order ?
Super video! I'm new to Tableau but wondering if there is a way to add a line to define top from bottom that will move if the N value changes. Also is there a way to add a rank.
Very helpful tutorial. Can I make Top and bottom N by changes of previous date (yearly, quarterly, monthly etc.)? Adding table calculation combined with calculated field on this set will work?
Many thanks! Video is a good help to create top and bottom by profit. What about if you want to create top and bottom by calculated field? Let's say, I need to create top and down by change in profit (%). In such a case, I am not allowed to set my measures when I create I set.
Great tutorial, worked very well. Thank you! When I try to add an additional filter though (to see the same result, but only for a particular year), the view gets distorted and Tableau disregards the number given in the parameter control section on the right. Is there a workaround for this?
Hi , thanks a lot for this. I have a requirement where instead of SUM(Measure) it is only Discrete Measure and how to find the Top N and Bottom N for this.My Bottom N has Negative Values,But when i Try it doesn't display it
Thanks this is great but for some reason when I do the filtering as described, some names are skipped , is it maybe I have groups of names? I am not sure why I dont get the same results when I do a simple table. Any ideas?
Hello! thanks, very usefull! one question, how can I put a condition to apply the Top N based on only year 2020? In the datasource we have several years and I am comparing profit of 2020 vs 2019 for top 10 clients but the Top10 seems to be calculated based on all years....thanks for your help!
Thanks for this video . Is it possible to show an option to just have top 10 and ZERO for bottom? My error msg: Unable to complete action The filter limit must be greater than zero. Error Code: AC6CC624
Hey I put this together and it worked! So thank you for that, however, when I apply filters to the view it only takes into consideration the same top and bottom values just filters out the values within that set. Is there a work around where the filter can make this dynamic?
You're set parameters may be set up incorrectly. By nature of the profit field...the bottom should be negative values and the top should be positive...so if you're correctly pulling both range of values, they should never be on the same side? If they are, to me...that sounds like you are pulling data that have nothing but the same direction of values.
This picks top N rows and makes a data set. How to pick all rows carrying top N values in a column of entire data set? e.g. values are 90 5 times, 89 5 times - this method picks only 10 rows and values are 90 and 85 - these are top 2 values - looking for top 10 values
I love this video, but everytime I try it, it gives wrong values. I'm not sure why. For instance, for the bottom 5, it always skips ranks, and it shows 5 lines for 'bottom n', but only 4 lines for 'top n', when n=5. anyone else having this issue?
Why is it that the tutorials using the Tableau datasets always work but applying the exact same steps to real world data always causes issues. Literally followed this step by step and my data looks nothing like this
@@matthewhefferon well I have a list of countries, a list of states, a list of payment amounts and a list of dates. Doesn't really get anymore simple than that.
bro ive been searching for how to this for hours thank you for getting straight to the point 😭

Described in the most shortest and easy to understand possible way. Thanks.

Thank you for this tutorial. But I am wondering how to do this in different categories.
wonderful point
Good stuff guy, thanks a lot
So awesome!!! Thanks! Would you mind showing me how to apply when doing this with percentages? It’s giving me some trouble
Also, once I drag the combined set into the filter box, it takes ages to process the request. I’ve filtered to only 6 mo of data

Thanks! You can filter Top and bottom N by a date no problem. Not sure about your table calculation and calculated fields. Best of luck!

This is great! Anyway to make null values not be considered in the bottom n? When I filter them out my bottom n fails to show anything.
@@matthewhefferon I actually just updated my calculated field that I’m using with a Isnull to set them to 0. Works great. Thanks again!

When I do this my top value disappears. Any idea as to why?
I created the workbook on my Tableau public profile if you want to check it out tabsoft.co/3HS9A4B
Why I can' find the parameters in the left hand side!!!
There is a down carrot to the right of the Search field and if you click that you will see "Create Parameter".
How do i do this with excel?
