    That's the complete rundown of our very worst Airbnb experiences. Do you have any Airbnb horror stories of your own? Or has it been a perfect stay every time?

      I only had 3 experiences on airbnb and all so far have been very good! But in September we started to live like you doing longer trips. I'm excited and with a lot of anxiety about the unknown!

      We had an AirBnB in Colombia that didn’t provide any pots or pans in the kitchen, very slow internet, and only one light bulb in each room! We even got a racist negative comment feedback from the host claiming we are not even Americans because of dark skin color, yet AirBnB didn’t remove that feedback from our profile. Best to say don’t rent from any property that doesn’t have at least ten reviews. These landlords change the addresses of the bad properties, and do bait and switch games to avoid bad reviews from piling up after the tenants are try to report them to AirBnB.

    As usual, a very honest and informative post. I just wanted to let you know that I leave on July 1st for my first slow travel experience! I'm off to Athens for a month as a sort of "test run" for my retirement. I'm not exactly planning an early retirement (I just turned 63 this month), but had never even imagined the concept of early retirement or slow travel until I stumbled across your channel. Thanks again for all your information. Wish me luck!!

    Great tips! Thanks for sharing the good and the bad. We’re just starting our AirBnB nomad lifestyle we’ve already noticed the “clutter” problem - so many things left from previous tenants (or the owner) that there is little space for our food and clothes!

    • @OurFreedomYears
      @OurFreedomYears  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly it! The past guests leave all kinds of things and no one ever clears them out. We usually spend an hour or two decluttering. But the trick is to take a photo so that you remember what it looked like before!

  • @latebloomerabroad
    @latebloomerabroad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree that even with the problems, Airbnb is a great way to go. I've had a few problems (as you said, the owners all lived elsewhere & were relying on competent locals to care for their homes), but all were luckily corrected within a few days and didn't detract from the experience.

    I love that you addressed this and it was good to keep your ratio of a couple of great places per one dud. My mom just returned from a $5200 1-month Airbnb in Maui where there were so many cockroaches they were even living in the refrigerator and freezer. Who knew cockroaches could thrive in a freezer?🥶 They did get half their money back and the exterminators were sent out, but that just about made up for the extra dining costs and staying out of the icky condo as much as possible. The other issue I worry about is security. What questions do you ask to make sure doors and windows are as secure as possible or is that where your cute dogs come in?

    • @OurFreedomYears
      @OurFreedomYears  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch! Both buggy and super expensive! Not a great combo. It's great to get the refund but not so nice to have a disrupted vacation.
      Regarding security, we are definitely mindful of having good working locks on doors and windows and of being based in neighbourhoods that are considered safe. So far we haven't had any concerns. Our dogs are good at raising the alarm if they hear any threats, whether real or imagined! 😂

      We usually find that if all the reviews are positive, the apartment is generally in good shape. However, it's important to look at how long ago the reviews were left and whether there are a lot of reviews or just a small number. There's always some risk when making a booking but certainly you can contact the host and/or Airbnb if anything is wrong with the apartment.

  • @Telluwide
    @Telluwide 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    AirBnB reviews are always tricky to sift through since guests don't like leaving bad reviews in fear the host will leave a bad review in return....You have to read between the lines.
    For example, if a reviewer left a very short review or nothing at all, you can go into their previous stays. If you find that they've left stellar and descriptive reviews for other AirBnB's, then that could be a red flag.
    If I have any doubts on a place and there isn't much available at the time of booking, I'll book for a few days or even a week and if I like it, arrange for a longer stay. If I don't, I'll look around, but by then, I'm on the ground so I could physically see the places myself. It might take a few days out of my schedule, but if I'm staying for 1-2 months, it's worth it.

      @Telluwide You are mistaken. Airbnb reviews are "blind". Neither the host nor the guest can see what the other has written until both reviews are submitted. Reviews may not be edited once both are posted. Therefore, there is no room for retaliatory reviews from either side.

    • @Telluwide
      @Telluwide 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JRspeaking That's not true. In fact, I have actually read retaliatory reviews of hosts and guests after one posted about the other....For example, my current host had only one review on AirBnB and it was as a guest in another AirBNB. The review for her was quite negative. She wrote a retaliatory response. So I was indeed a little hesitant on renting from her. Thank God I was already here on the ground, met her in person and saw the place. Needless to say, I took the apartment and things have worked out real well for both of us....

The road trip will begin in March'22 and end in St.Petersburg Fl. Oct 31'22, while I look for permanent housing, or maybe we'll just keep traveling! Are you using Superhosts?
    Also, I have financial questions. We'll be poor and I fear about our survival on such a low income. I am set for life with $1800 a mo and Medicare that travels with me.. do I need ins for my dog? Glad you found us! Welcome to our channel. 😊 Sounds like you have some exciting plans ahead. Regarding insurance for your dog, after having insurance for our previous dog, we decided that it made more financial sense to put a little money aside each month to cover routine health care and any emergencies (instead of giving it to an insurance company).
      It's great that you have substantial savings but it's also important to make sure that your money is invested in a portfolio that is appropriate to your risk profile. This ensures that it keeps growing and offsets any inflation you might face during your retirement years.
