1/6/2025 - The myth that soldiers returning from Vietnam were spat upon by protesters is just that, a myth. But some veterans perpetuate it due to a combination of factors including: a negative perception of the anti-war movement, a sense of betrayal from the public regarding the war's unpopularity, a desire for attention which was not forthcoming upon returning from Vietnam, and the amplification of this narrative in popular culture which can solidify the belief even if it isn't based on reality. There is no substantial historical evidence to support widespread instances of Vietnam veterans being physically assaulted or spat upon by protesters upon their return.
The myth creates a narrative of victimhood that helps unhappy veterans cope with the complex emotions of returning from a war and finding that nobody cares what the veteran did in the military. Nobody asks, “How was it over there?” Nobody cares and I am just fine with that. What matters is that I care and I know that I grew as a person from my experience in Vietnam as a combat infantryman. I do not need anybody’s endorsement of my service or performance. And, I do not suffer from PTSD which is the biggest sham invented by Vietnam veterans just to get a monthly payment for a “service connected disability,” which is fake. Upon returning from Vietnam and getting discharged from the Army I traveled from Oakland to my home in Los Angeles: Nobody spit on me. That guy talking on this video is bullshitting. Movies like "First Blood" featuring John Rambo's flashbacks of being spat upon by protesters contributed to the myth's persistence.
That is a lie no one got spit on . Show me one video that a Military guy was spit on. I have 6 brothers 3 went to Vietnam and 10 friends from the neighborhood that was drafted and went to Vietnam, also my husband is a Vietnam vet , they all came back and land in at O’Hare Airport - San Diego airport-San Francisco airport-Raleigh area- and not one of them said anyone did what you said - yes you were not treat to a homecoming because the😮 Government wanted you to be quiet . Stop telling these lies . Not one video showing that happening , yes we were protesting peacefully, which helped the war end . But no one was against the military . My Husband who is a Vietnam veteran. Says you tell that lie because you lost and want to cry about who did you wrong. When in fact you should take that anger out on the Government for agent orange that has killed thousands after coming home.
I was spared that kind of reception because I was brought home on a medical plane to Logan airport and then placed on a bus. No public.

BUT later on, as I attended BU, when the students realized I was a combat vet, I was ridiculed and ostrized.
Liar....
