I put a cuttlebone in one of my turtle tanks the other day because they hadn't had one in a while and they demolished it! Although I do have other turtles that won't touch it. For added calcium I also use the zoo med banquet blocks from time to time which all of my turtles love! And I offer greens to my veggie loving turtles, but they prefer green leaf and romaine. I have also offered dandelion greens and collards but they don't care for them. They have eaten frozen thawed green peas and shredded carrots before as well. I also do the trick you showed about tossing the pellets in calcium powder and it IS tricky to have them eat it before the calcium washes off, but I usually use feeding tongs to prevent it as much as possible
I have googled this so many times! Been searching like crazy online and the information I gathered collectively doesn’t even come close to the gem of information you shared here!! Ugh thank you so much!!
I know this video is 5 years old, but I stumbled across it, and it was a huge help!! I found a baby turtle wandering outside just before a hurricane, so I had to grab him up. He doesn't eat or bask when I'm around much, but as soon I dropped the cuttlebone in, he went straight for it!! Thanks a million, he clearly needed the calcium
No need to apologize for missing an upload, you’re a busy turtle girl and we understand but we love when you can upload and just wanted to say keep up the good work in everything you do, you are really kick butt and this video was super cool ☺️
I went to Petco and in the bird section they have a 2-pack of e-Cuttlebone by Pen Plax and it has no hard backing on the back of the cuttlebone, just plastic shrink wrapped to keep it fresh.
Its not just putting calcium in the water or in the turtles mouth, it's how much is absorbed by the turtle. In this respect, leafy green vegetables are by far the best calcium source because the calcium content is 100% absorbed by the turtle. Not to mention all the other fabulous nutrients veggies contain. If your turtle wont take veggies at first, work on it, it's worth it.
No they need to mate, and yes they need a sandy area to lay the eggs. Then a homemade, or store bought, incubator to keep the eggs protected from anything that might happen.
Very helpful I used to keep birds so I know about cuttle bones I have the calcium block with the food pellets but it gets the tank water messy I will get cuttle bones instead Thank you Turtle Girl.
Hey turtle girl i just bought cuttlebone for my turtle and i smells like rotten fish i am not been able to breath in its presence what should i do should i return them or treat them?
I feed frozen shrimp to my hatchlings. I am not sure but I think the chitin in the tails might be a source of calcium. BTW, chopped frozen shrimp is a great way to get turtles to eat and a $5.99 bag will last forever. Love your show.
I absolutely love turtles! They are amazing pets! Fun to take care of and NOT ANNOYING. They are not to hard to take care of hardest part is cleaning the aquarium and even yet that isn’t hard as long as you use a siphon so you don’t need to deep clean! Good aquarium maintenance isn’t difficult
I put a cuttlebone whole in my tank and my turtles didn't touch it. I took it out and tried again another day but this time broke it into peices and they seemed to enjoy it better that way. I have a red eared slider and a yellow belly slider.
I read somewhere on the net about calcium carbonate powder. Like just add calcium carbonate powder to their food,,,like I do that? Because where I live, calcium supplements for reptiles is not available that widely
Hi I recently got a baby red eared slider, I noticed that his shell is soft is this because of lack of calcium? Also I’ve saw many videos of people cleaning their turtles shell with Iodine and some with just water and tooth brush. What do you prefer? I read that iondine is to help get rid of bacteria and for shell rotting.
I have a very picky Red ear slider ..he won't eat the cuttle bone, I even mixed it with his food and he still spits it out...is there any other way to give my turtle calcium.like can the cuttle bone dissolve in the water and he can get it that way ...help
We normally put in the turtle bone and I've seen him chomping down on it every so often. Not entirely sure if he swallows it, though. I don't know why, but when Hoku decided to cannon ball into the tank I just couldn't stop laughing.
omg this channel is growing mad fast. when i first saw one of your vids, you were at like 1.2k subs. that was like 3 months ago. now you're at 8.1k Edit: i may be wrong
Hi turtle girl I have a baby red earred slider turtle. I have the proper set up, I don’t feed him in the tank. But I find there’s a film over the top of the water in the tank and I’m not sure how to get rid of it. I keep the tank clean. I have a filter but still have this film over the top...any advice on how I can eliminate it? Thanks
not me tasting the cuttlebone during the video... btw im kind of confused on which side of the cuttlebone to remove. do we shave off the sides, or the hard plasticy part?
Hi im getting in to the turtle as a pet just wondering witch you advise for my first im looking at the southern painted or the northern diamondback terrapin any help thank you
I just got a turtle and I love you!!! Sorry, that's a little forward. You're pretty cool 😃 do you happen to have a video about different species of turtles??
i did some research the other day.. and branded calcium sources for reptiles used calcium carbonate...so why spend tons of money for branded stuff when, 1kg of calcium carbonate cost only 4-5euros and 8-9dollars... its pretty awesome, only thing you have left to do after that is buy multivitamins with d3 in it.
Turtle girl i want to ask you when i feed my turtle my pellets have a some kind of a bug or something what should i do i alredy feed it before i notice it will it harm the turtle or it okay ????
@@TheTurtleGirl okay i really like your diamond but icant afford it xD yeah its expensive in our country PH... anyway try to get tortoise too like redfoot or sulcata it not kinda expensive :)
I've been keeping aquariums for like 30 years. I've used aquaclear hang on back filters almost all those years. Just got my first turtle a year ago from someone not providing proper care. Anyway, I bought the Fluval FX4. It's great, but expensive. I finally just bought an aquaclear 110 after not having this size for several years. And I realized something-- I could have bought three aquaclear 110 filters for the price of the one FX4! So yeah, wish I had thought of that a year ago because I LOVE the AC filters. They pump a lot of water and have a huge space for lots of media.
Hi turtle girl..all ur videos r vry informative...I hv sum queries regarding my turtle shell..I hv sent you pics on Instagram..pls reply to me..thnk u👍
i use like a kind of calcium thing turtle-shaped, i don't know what i's called and i put it in the tank and it disolves in the water, that's what the instructions said... 🥲

The tongs are a really smart idea! Might have to try that!

i was planning on getting cuddlebone, so thanks for making this cause i didnt realize the hard backing could be a hazard!
Yep! Gotta watch out for the back!
Oh hi

Even though you only feed your turtles those two veggies, I. Sure we all want to see those cute shots of your turtles munching away!!!
Lol Nemo only goes for it if he's really hungry...he likes his pellets much better than veggies 😂
I just wanna say thank you sooooooooooo much!!! I'm a proud turtle owner now and if it wasn't for you I'd be clueless! Thank you so much!

Awesome video Turtle Girl. The veggies I use in my shrimp tanks for calcium are spinach and kale.
I would be careful with spinach because it actually has oxalic acid, which binds calcium, but I do believe kale is ok!
Video idea: "Should you give your turtle an area to lay eggs?" or "Can a turtle lay eggs without a mate?" Thank you as always for the great info!
thanks for the suggestion!
No they need to mate, and yes they need a sandy area to lay the eggs. Then a homemade, or store bought, incubator to keep the eggs protected from anything that might happen.
I think all female turtles lay eggs, they just won't be furtile if no male is présent

Hey turtle girl i just bought cuttlebone for my turtle and i smells like rotten fish i am not been able to breath in its presence what should i do should i return them or treat them?
Yess!!! Before, sadly, I lost my turtle, I do use cuttlebone. In my opinion, I think it's more natural.🐢🐢🐢
My local petstore sells their generic brand cheap. Its $3 for 10 cuttlefish bone. I usually buy them for my isopods

I make my own calcium powder using cuttlebone, i just scratch it with a bread knife 🤘🏻...thanks for the additional info turtlegirl you’re the best
that's a great idea! thanks!
I have heard of some people that put eggshells in the tank that turtles can feed on for extra calcium. What is your opinion on that?
I read somewhere on the net about calcium carbonate powder. Like just add calcium carbonate powder to their food,,,like I do that? Because where I live, calcium supplements for reptiles is not available that widely
You could do that every so often! But straight up cuttlebone is good too!
i love this channel it's so helpful with my turtle and I. BTW he's staring at me while im typing this.

Great!I like your videos. As for suggestions for your next video how about water plants that is safe for turtles?
Did you change the Sunbath box in top of your turtles tank?
I have two turtles a red ear slider and a stinkpot
Good stuff! I use tums personally to add calcium... At least to my fish tanks, no clue about turtles?
yes, I've used tums for snails before, although never for turtles....huh, might have to do more research into that!
How do I get my DBT to eat vegetables?
btw I LOVE your videos!
Hey you may have answered this b4 but can I give this to a baby turtle I bought it but scared to give it to crash

You might have to add an air stone for surface disturbance...usually the film is a protein film. You can also use a fish net to scoop it all out.
Is it still ok to give my turtle Repti Calcium powder with Vitamin D3 while she's getting a good amount of UVB/UVA?
How does this affect your water? I keep fish with turtles and fish are sensitive
I'm wondering whether it's okay to give your turtle cuttlebone powder?
not me tasting the cuttlebone during the video...
btw im kind of confused on which side of the cuttlebone to remove. do we shave off the sides, or the hard plasticy part?
the hard plasticky part is the side that you DON'T want your turtle eating.

Can i make a powder of egg shells and mix with turtle pellets

Hi! Can i use the calcium chews
What do you mean by calcium chews? Yes, you can use cuttlebone, not sure what else you'd be referring to?
@@TheTurtleGirl Thanksfor responding! Its called ReptoGuard and it says i contains calcium
Thanks for this this video.....
It's really helpful for me and my turtle.....
I give my turtle cuttlebone!
It's okay turtle girl
thanks Molly!
Sometimes you don't have to be professionally trained sometimes as just personal experience
Should hatchlings be given extra calcium/cuttlebone?
Yes! You can offer it to them for sure, although I'm not sure how easily they babies would actually be able to eat the cuttlebone...
hi, may i know what species of aquatic turtle is that?
Thank you
I remember recommending this video to you although I’m sure other people have aswell🐢🐢🐢
Hi I wanted to know if you could mate two different types of turtles from the same species
Two turtles of the same species can mate, but if they are of different species they generally won't.
I use it for Anton👆👆👆🐢
My Res won't eat veggies. 😞
Persistence often helps!
I've had her for over 2 years and I've attempted to feed her every fruit and vegetable suggested. She's not having it. 😞😰
How old is Hoku and what is the amount of food u feed him each day?
he's almost two years, and I feed him every other day as much as would fill his head if hollow :)
Thanks a lot
