- A long time friend of mine suggested I do this folk/rock classic from Donovan, because of the controversy around who played drums on the original. The great English session drummer , Clem Cattini was the drummer... however, some people think it was Bonzo. Although Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were at the session (Page plays, along with Allan Holdsworth and Jones played bass and arranged the song), Bonzo wasn't yet involved with Jimmy and Jones, as this was recorded in April of 68. It doesn't make sense that he would be at this session, which was months before Jimmy would supposedly first hear Bonzo in summer with Tim Rose's band. More importantly, it doesn't sound like Bonzo, to my ears.
For this video I try to approximate what John might have played like.

Fond memories of this one. Agree, not likely Bonham on the drums. You can certainly sense some influence Clem might have had on Bonham, along with all the other e.g. Joe Morello, Bernard Purdie, along with the New Orleans players back in the day.

Most excellent!!! HGM is great choice for a Bonzo style mash-up. I was first introduced to the tune through Steve Hillage album "L" and loved the guitar work in that that version.
I knew it was Jonesy and Page and just assumed it was also Bonham...but perhaps you're right if you factor in the timeline ...What a trip

George, hope all is well with you and the crew. I've always loved this tune and basically you could interchange his drumming here with anything on Led Zeppelin 1 it would fit right in! This tune was always cool because the drums were mixed out front in the studio, almost like No Quarter studio version so it really showcases Bonzo. You definitely got that really heavy swinging early Bonham feel down with this one, it has kind of a unique vibe to it it and was a foreshadowing of what was soon to be drumming history. I also love the ambiance with respect to the giant beat ride, really captured that sound and feel just awesome! Peace, Paiste Bob

I have a completionist question: There’s a couple of videos from the beginning of your channel that I can’t find. One is your first snare tuning video I think ( I specifically remember you talking about Ambassadors vs Emperors), and the other was where you tried to use a tunebot. I loved both those, it’s freaking me out that I can’t find them.
