  • Hurdy Gurdy Man from Donovan drum cover.
Triggering the British Rock kit from Drum Masters2.
As of this posting have not found another drum cover on YT of this song.
DISCLAIMER: I DON'T CONDONE THIS KIND OF DRUMMING AND BELIEVE THE PHRASE OF THE MELODY SHOULD RESOLVE BEFORE TAKING A DRUM FILL WHICH REALLY SHOULD SET UP THE NEXT SECTION OF THE SONG. THIS DRUMMING IS AN EXAMPLE OF "OVERPLAYING", SO KIDS DON'T TRY THIS ON THE GIG, I THEREFORE TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT GET HURT PLAYING THIS FORM OF DRUMMING - USE AT YOUR RISK! : D
THE DRUMMING VIEWS EXCLUSIVELY EXPRESSED ARE THOSE OF THE ORIGINAL DRUMMER AND NOT THE OWNER OF THIS CHANNEL.
it's been rumored that Jimmy Page is the guitar player and John Bonham on drums on the session. However, I found the following on a Clem Cattini web page stating who played what on the session:
    Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan
Funny I should be asked about "Hurdy Gurdy Man". I spoke to John Paul Jones who played bass on it and was the MD. The guitar player was Alan Parker. American Web sites say that John Bonham and Jimmy Page played on it. This is absolute Bullshit as JPJ said. This is the e-mail sent BY JPJ.
    TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
I have been contacted by Clem Cattini with regard to Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man
I would like to confirm that the musicians on the record were as follows
    Donovan Accoustic Guitar
John Paul Jones Arrangement/Musical Director and Bass Guitar
    Alan Parker Lead (electric) Guitar
    Clem Cattini Drums
No other musicians were involved in this session
The session was produced by Mickie Most and engineered by Eddie Kramer.
    John Paul Jones

I love how this song is like a cool gentle psychedelic song but the drummer went crazy lmao

@twncintiohio Yes, today we would refer to this as "overplaying" and I had to play against my better judgment as I wouldn't have played so fills but I wanted to honestly cover the song and it's an essential identifying hook of the song. Thanks for watching.

Hey thanks for being one of the few to check this out. I'm always pleased to learn that my videos serve other drummers in learning. Very good about USAF, a good branch of the service. Thanks for your encouragement.

I've heard this song so many times. Always loved the vocals, always loved the guitar, but for some reason, I only just the other day realized what a beast the drums were.

Well done, old son! I have always loved this song, and was happily amazed one night to pick up on how the drums just get better and better throughout the song. Great fun! Thank you!

I absolutely love this song. Thanks for covering it. I'm not a drummer, unless you count beating on the steering wheel with the CD player cranked way up, but I've always thought I might have had what it takes to be passable. You make it look soooo easy.

Great song pick. It's really cool that you pick a song like this that is a blast from the past. One I haven't heard in ages and you did an excellent cover. Wow...some very nice fills there.......I hadn't realized that this song had a rather complex drum arrangement. Very inspiring cover and again great pick....Nick

Awesome! This songs gets so much recognition for Donovan's vibrato and Jimmy Page's magnificent guitar, (and deservedly so), but this was 68, this kind of drumming was rare. Ginger, Ringo, Moon, and Mitch from Hendrix' band. Ahead of its time.

Hey thanks for being one of the few to check this out. Yea, it's favorite of mine ever since I first heard it on a USAF airbase when it first came out. Well keep playing the steering wheel and it's never too late to learn an instrument. Thanks for watching.

Donovan at his eerie vocal best! That quiver is legendary! He thought John Lennon fingerstyle guitar hence the style for julia and Dear Prudence and forward..This is a blast to behold, man this rocks Sal!

@readyeddy101 Nick, that surprises me when folks comment that they didn't realize how prominent & out front the drums are in this song, I suppose that says a lot about Donovan. I first heard this song when I was in the USAF at the age of 18, its power just blew me away.

  • @rhythmantic

@sbbinahee Yea, it is eerie, I really like his vocal and you are quite the historian, yes, I've read that about John, it was during their vacation at the Maharishi's summer camp in Bangalore at foot of the Himalayas. Thanks Paul for watching and taking time to comment.

@sbbinahee The photo was taken in August of 2005, it was my last day in the garage in the house we moved from on the Pacific Ocean coast, it was a sad day because it was the last place I was able to have an acoustic drum set set up. But things are blessed now with the Roland V-Drums. I put the photo in as a lark, also to cover up something I did in that frame that may appear to be something I didn't want to look like, sorry to be so cryptic. So he's in your country now, very good. I dig Donovan

There is confusion who played drums and who played guitar (Alan Holdsworth or Jimmy Page). But most who were present on the session claim it was Clem Cattini.

AnnMarie Boyd Thank you for the kind words. I saw your 2 videos and you should keep playing and learning, especially from the music of the 60s & 70s, those were magical times to live through, it was a renaissance period of which the results are still with us today.
