Elinor says that Edward will be happy knowing that he kept his word and tries to convince herself that this is true. She is a woman of true nobility and character. In this scene she painfully places credibility over emotion. Perhaps this is why we love her so much.

I have always felt very touched by Thompson's interpretation in this scene. Throughout the movie we see Elinor as a reasonable character who endures every blow with honorable composure and respect; she always looks after everyone else before taking care of her own feelings and tries to resolve every problem in the best way possible. However, it is something very difficult keep up with and it can be very painful to endure. I love how Thompson portrays this and, although I also find the miniseries to be very well acted, I haven't felt the same feeling of explosion and release from any other Elinor as hers.

I totally agree. Emma Thompson has been my favourite actress since I can remember and it fascinates me every time - be it here in S&S, Remains of the Day, Saving Mr Banks or wherever- how she manages to transport emotion through a moment of silence, the look in her eyes and the expression on her face. To take a closer look at those facettes really shows the brilliance in her acting.

Jane Austen is always seen as a great romantic writer, but she actually eschews a lot of romantic conventions. Most stories would have Edward break his engagement with Lucy and join with Elinor, but it's spelled out here how absolutely horrible that would actually be, a cruel betrayal of Lucy that would haunt him. Mariane's "I would not have him marry when he does not love" betrays her simplistic view of the situation, where love is the only thing that matters. Elinor knows that there's more to happiness.

This is hands down my favorite scene from the movie. Throughout the events hitherto, Elinor kept her disposition as a person who values (common) sense above all, even so far as keeping her vow of secrecy over something that has visibly hurt her in various degrees.
This scene is so heart-wrenching and somehow refreshing at the same time because even for just a split second, a mere three minutes throughout the entirety of the movie, we see Elinor Dashwood in all her vulnerability. There is definitely a pride on putting duty and civility over passion, but this scene shows that there are burdens that you carry along with it as well.
Taking into account the sheer talent and magnificence of Emma Thompson, I can very well say that this scene is not only my favorite scene from Sense and Sensibility, but in all time as well.

Divine scene--so revealing of both sisters. Jane Austen is, as usual, spot on regards to the affairs of the human heart. Every family has a Elinor and a Marianne--sometimes in one person. I just got off the phone with a family member who was Elinor for years then became Marianne when she met someone who empathized with her. Unfortunately his heart was not as sincere as his expression and he dumped her and she sufferered. We all move on and learn--there's people out there who appreciate us for who we are.

I think you’re right, there’s probably always an Elinor and Marianne and every family.
I was always the Elinor in my family, and my sister was 100% Marianne. She experienced so many more heartbreaks than I did because she threw herself into so many more infatuous relationships. I always comforted her at the end of each, while I quietly waited for anyone to want to be with me instead of her, because she was always more beautiful.
And then when I met my husband, who I married a year ago, I experienced the same wildness of joy and untethered, soaring emotions that Elinor does in the end of this movie 🥹

Marianne in this scene is so remarkable. She’s just had her heart broken by Willoughby, but momentarily forgets all her own pain and focuses on her sister’s predicament, finally allowing Elinor to be honest about how she’s feeling. Very sappy for a British movie.
Marianne and Elinor hugging was touching.

Elinor, I know how you feel.

oh god, if you've ever been an Elinor suffering silently because you are mindful of others' feelings, constantly putting everyone over yourself, you will know this pain! It is even more difficult if you have a Marianne close to you, who has a good heart but can be self-absorbed. Even with her heart aching Elinor will set herself aside to comfort Marianne. This hurts for me to watch because I am like Elinor in many ways.

I dont know why , but I cannot stand Marianne . She is so self absorbed and entitled .
Elinor rocks . If I was a man , I would have surely chosen Elinor .

@Erin D'Agostini I was talking Mrs. Jennings, however, she was not Madame Pomphrey, she was the Fat Lady (the painting leafing to the Gryffindor dorms)

Wow, I didn't realise there were so many actors from S&S in Harry Potter although I'm a huge fan of both! Bc obviously, we also have Alan Rickman (Colonel Brandon/Snape) and Imelda Staunton (Mrs Palmer/Umbridge)

I take back what i said four years ago. Yes Eleanor came off as harsh, but I guarantee you "Hannah Montana" has more in common with this than with "Flicka." And at least Eleanor hugs Marianne at the end. Critical and harsh but still loving. I plan on doing a Rebel rendition, not that England wasn't the birthplace of Rebel culture, already, but Miley and her bros looking after their little Maisie (you know Maisie Williams from "GOT") as their baby just is growing up, finding her girlfriends and finding her man. In Southern harsh, but Miley still hugs Maisie and this isn't like "Flicka."

You're not. I doubt the modern day equivalent of Elinor would call herself 'candymandy'.

But tell that to the Romance division. After all no one gets paid if you do not marry. The weight loss ads, hair, shoes, makeup, wardrobe, engagement ring, wedding service, honeymoon, moving expenses, real estate, insurance, shall I go on? Home furnishings, new business start-ups, and oh, don’t forget legal! Oh my. 😊

This is something I could never understand, unless I am missing something - Edward lost inheritance because of Lucy. Wealth went to his brother. Lucy ran to follow the money and Edward’s brother married her and lost nothing. Why Edward wasn’t reinstated as a rightful heir then? If his engagement to Lucy was the reason of his troubles?

Because it was settled on Robert irretrievably. Which means it can't be undone.
Also, Robert was his mother's favorite son. Unlike Edward, the same mistake was easier forgiven. Yup, the partiality is mind boggling.
I am glad that their mom got stuck with Lucy anyway, and had to accept her children as her grandkids.

    Mark 15:31-32
So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked Him to one another, saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with Him also reviled Him.

Your comment is out of place here and that is something Christ never did not did his disciples. Please learn from the Bible Jesus way of teaching and how he taught his disciples to witness. Comments such as yours only serve to turn others away from God and his word

The challenge for me is that Emma was way too old for her part. The character is suppose to be 19 and Marianne is suppose to be 17, Kate can pull that off but not Emma.

What was intentional. The movie makers thought it would confuse the audience as to why a 19 yr old was called a spinster.

That's like what "bro"-saying Hispanic, Rivera, Nuyoriquenas do when they scold their daughter or are angry at them.
They mean what they say but they feel so bad about how they say it that, without apologizing, they hug their daughter.
LOL they do it more than whites

Elinor's look of near terror as Marianne approaches with those lines...
Knowing that her sister was going to pull out the heart...and being pretty sure that doing so would only hurt Marianne...
      oof.
