    That crying and choking is the sound of the breaking of a dam of emotions after months of repressing them. Amazing acting of Emma Thompson.

      True :) Elinor was a powderkeg of bottled emotion. An explosion would have happened sooner or later. This book was so fascinating...the thinker vs the feeler. I would empathise with Elinor, yet I do admire Marianne's passionate fire for life. These heroines are as crucial today as the time that the novel was written.

    • @random4546
      @random4546 7 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      I think you don't understand his situation. He and the other woman were engaged from a very young age when he didn't know what he was doing. Afterwards he felt chained to his promise to marry that woman. That is why he oppressed his feelings for Elinor. It was his sacrifice to stay true to his word. So when that other woman dumped him he was free to marry the woman he loved.

    Only if you have severely repressed emotions can you understand what this must feel like. Elinor's character never once wore her heart upon her sleeve. To bottle everything up and squeezing those contents of your heart into a small compartment of your heart requires so much effort and restraint. Imagine what it must have been like to no longer have to hold on to those emotions, Emma Thompson did such a good job at conveying the mean of being in love with someone with your whole heart and never hiving the ability to express those feelings.

    For me, this is THE most romantic scene in the history of cinema. The delicate, almost inaudible and slowly progressing way in which Edward profess to not having married and then how it inch by inch dawns upon Elinor that she can then be married to him, is fantastic. The final blend of wimpering, sobbing and happy laughter by Elinor is just astonishing.

      I don’t blame her, I’d sob too if I found out that my dream of contented bliss was no longer just some pie-in-the-sky type of situation! Those two were always meant to be, they formed an instant connection/affection. So comfortable. And anyway Edward can be himself with Eleanor, she’s his friend. His ex was too pretentious and status conscious, a prestige humper. She’ll be happier with Edward’s pompous brother cuz they never would have lasted. 👎🏽

    It is so fitting that Mrs Dashwood and Marianne’s reaction at the end takes precedence over the rest of Edward’s proposal. In this scene, after Emma Thompson’s superb acting, it is Marianne’s reaction which really gets me. After everything she has been through with Willoughby and her illness, knowing her sister was there for her through it all, she is absolutely beside herself with joy for her beloved sister when she gets HER happiest of endings with the softly spoken, quiet, gentle natured Edward. ❤️ There is nothing quite like the friendship and love of two sisters - something I know personally to be true!

    • @mish375
      @mish375 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Cherish that bond with your sister. Not all of us are lucky enough to have sisters that will have our backs. It think it's wonderful to see Marianne's happiness for Elinor as she just wants her sister to be happy.

    The pain she has endured throughout the film.. and still choking up from trying to fight back. Those are cries from the soul right there.... almost as though she’d won a lottery and she cannot believe it. From this soulful cry, I adored her character more....
    For him to say his heart will always be hers.... icing on the cake. Makes me want to cry that she finally gets her man beyond all belief.

      Definitely. Also in The Children Act. And Love Actually, of course...that always makes me so sad because she said herself about that scene:"I had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer. If you've got to my age, you've probably had your heart broken many times, so it's not that difficult to unpack a bit of grief from some little corner of your heart and cry over it."

    What a beautiful scene ! After almost 1.5 hours of heartbreaks comes this scene and it did bring a huge smile, happiness from my heart. and Emma Thompson's acting is so natural and beyond words.. so much pain, relief and love and happiness.. all in one. I wish to experience this some day !

    I can't stand it! For some reason I just wanted to check and see whether or not this scene was on TH-cam. I just watched the movie a few weeks ago and, even though I'd seen it perhaps twice before I don't know, I was just in the mood to watch it. When Emma Thompson starts crying, like she can't breathe, like every emotion she's felt for the whole movie comes pouring out in these last 2 minutes, I start crying too. It's an awesome scene!

    *0:27** Look at Kate's face when she left 🤣 God that's unintentionally funny. Until then Marianne thought Elinor is so cold, she can't express. The sudden outburst of emotions took her off her feet. She actually donno how to console her 💕 poor thing. Well crafted scene Emma 😍*

    I just watched Vicar of Dibley and came straight to see this scene when Emma Thompson makes that weird sound. I must confess Dawn French's version was a bit exaggerated but it was nevertheless hilarious and I was laughing hysterically.

    I don't know why people say she didn't act well here. She got an oscar what else you need?
    And tbh her charecter resembles me so much. I hide my pain like her and whenever i face a mental breakdown i literally cry like the way she did. I try my best to stop, i feel embarrassed meanwhile but it cant stop. People who keeps their pain inside their heart would understand how painful this scene is. I love Emma Thompson ❤

    0:37 Dawn French exaggerated her reaction! I was hoping for a more buuahhhh! I watched this scene after watching the vicar of dibley where she talks about the strange noise Emma Thompson makes when she finds out he's not married. I love this movie. Sense and Sensibility is one of the greats.
