Actually, most of the similarities between Paladins and Overwatch are due to the fact that both are based on a 2010 game called Global Agenda, and it is unlikely that they could have been inspired by each other because the first betas of both games came out with barely a month apart, not to mention that there is a confusion with the paladins announcement date because the game changed its name many times before its release

And everyone ignores that overwatch also ripped some things from paladins.
Skye, the invisible purple lady with an SMG-type weapon was in paladins before sombra released.
Bastion's ult in overwatch was changed to be more like viktor's ult.
Hanzo and sha lin are often compared, but overwatch changed hanzo's scatter arrow into a plant stance, which sha lin already had.
Wrecking ball is pretty similar to ruckus, in that they both have dual machine guns, are both a small creature piloting a robot who can talk, and both have an ability that adds a lot of shield to their health. Ruckus came first.
So it's not really as simple as 'paladins stole from overwatch', but that seems to be what most people think.

Glad to see more people giving Paladins a fair shake ~ I installed it ages ago on a lark and after finally getting sick of OW2's predatory monetization nonsense, I booted it back up again. I've unlocked all of the heroes with gold earned from casually playing, and I was a mediocre Overwatch player; the level of skill expression that can be felt through getting increasingly better at champions in Paladins feels way, WAY better than Overwatch did - and with the card system it adds another layer of depth to let you really lean into a certain playstyle. They also actually give you stuff for free, wich OW2 doesn't really do anymore. I wanted to try the new heroes but nope, paywalled behind a battlepass =/ what nonsense! If you just play a little you'll be earning enough gold to buy all the champions you want, and they have a free rotation that changes every week so you'll always be able to play some new heroes each week, which feels more than fair.

Overwatch does site one of its inpirations to be Global Agenda and in the case for characters like phara they site Tribes to be the inpiration, which is highly ironic because both of those games are made by the same studio who made Paladins lol. Paladins was made to be a spiritual successor to Gobal Agenda from the same studio who created it. Both Overwatch and Paladins started development at around the same exact time, so Paladins really ended up being done dirty by the "overwatch clone" allegations, very ironic.
That being said, when HiRez saw the success of early overwatch they did change their main gamemode to be more similar to it, but let's be honest, capture & push gamemodes weren't invented by OW so Paladins can only be faulted for "copying" as much as OW there.

Paladins was in the making an entire year before Overwatch was thought of. It’s come a long way since the very beginning, I’ve been there since day 1 and could tell you every moment in it’s history of bugs, changes, etc.
On that note, if you want to become better at it in at least the basics first things first is learn your talents, loadouts, in game items, how cauterize (anti healing) works, your maps, comeback mechanic, the differences between off tank/point tank, off support/main support, positioning and line/out of line of sight to refresh anti healing for heals.
These are only merely the BASICS for this game.
Edit: I forgot to mention learning the credit system and how it works for your items and what you should do in your particular class to obtain as much as you can.

Paladins is just so much more bright than Overwatch, and from my experience much less competitive, at least in casual matches. No one feels pressured to play a certain role, I've seen teams of all flank, all damages, all supports, and all tanks, both win and lose. That car customization really shows how you play your champion in each specific situation in addition to the talents. I love the game, it's one of the only fps games I actually enjoy, started since alpha and seeing it grow this much has been great.

I admittedly dropped Paladins around 3 years ago due to lack of QoL features and overall polish compared to OW. With the way things are going now though, I can see at least 4 good reasons to pick it up again over OW:
*1)* Heroes (AKA champions) must be locked in at the start of the match, preventing a constant counterpicking meta which is prevalent in other hero shooters and tends to drive away players who like to commit to a certain main. To compensate for this, champions are highly customizable through the dozens of passive buff options, including a simple LoL-like list of items, which can be adjusted mid-game to adapt to whatever current disadvantages your team comp may be dealing with. This combined with the whopping 20 additional heroes over OW allows much more variety for players to cultivate their own unique playstyles and team comp specialties.
*2)* Around two years ago, Paladins reworked their "cauterize" item, which would give enemies a brief healing debuff when hit, exactly like how the current DPS passive works in OW2. Since this was such a must-pick in the Paladins meta, they instead made it a passive for everyone, allowing more item points to be spent elsewhere. The cauterize meta is probably what inspired the new DPS passive in OW2.
*3)* Less than a year ago, Paladins ditched their Switch port. Although this is obviously bad news for Switch-exclusive players, this opened up a lot more possibilities for the devs to add features without the hardware restrictions of the Switch. Perhaps the most notable change is the inclusion of larger maps.
*4)* Despite coming out a year before Paladins and having much more development resources, OW has been recently taking notes from Paladins gameplay. Although much of these changes are pretty much already standard in the genre and genres like it, the list of changes include: the new F2P model, 5v5, higher TTK, larger hitboxes, passive regen out of combat, as well as the previously mentioned healing debuff effect.
All of this combined with Acti-Blizz's abrupt change in staff and vision, as well as their absurd amount of controversies over the years tends to give players less and less reasons to pick OW over Paladins. Not to imply that you need to exclusively pick one over the other. Another really useful comparison to make is the quality of balance patches and responsiveness to community feedback, which I'm not yet informed enough to make. (edit: added more details in the last paragraph and corrected TTK acronym)

Yeah. Once a character clicks with you, you simply come to enjoy the game way more than you ever thought. Happened to me with atlas and now tyra and Rei, happened to a friend with Raum and Yagorath, which he has 35+ hours in each of those two.
Paladins veteran here, kinda. Only got 90 hours total spread through the Last 4 years of my puny existance. I tried some overwatch recently, tho not too much, and i honestly agree with most of the points of the video. The comparisons were inevitable, and thats ok. Tho Furia is definetely not mercy, not even in the type of Angel they are trying to represent. Mercy is, well, Mercyfull good angels Protecting People and Furia is straight up a goddam valkirie with a shotgun. I still like paladins more, as a tank and support main. The amount of times you feel you have to fall back AS A FUCKING TANK in OW is much higher than in paladins most of the times. They both feel like games that focused on different aspects of the "Hero Shooter" genre. Overwatch has a better shooting i gotta admit, but paladins feels much more focused on the abilities and mobility.
Some tips about the stuff you found most overwhelming, the item shop and the card system.
Items just think about what you are going to grab and do it quickly while respawning. You can double click on an item to buy it without having to drag the mouse to the other side of the screen. Some People prefer to grab tier 1 of all items they are gonna use as soon as possible, others Max an item first then go for the next. Test out items (and characters too) in the shooting range to get an idea, but you usually grab Chronos with healer then either haven or morale boost depending on the character. Flanks grab usually kill to heal and nimble to keep sustain and mobility. Tanks grab rejuvenate to counter the built in antihealing mechanic, then Haven or Veteran for extra meatiness. DPS grab kill to heal, then pretty much any of the red items depending on enemy composition. Torvald putting shield on everyone? Wrecker. Your champion has too long of a reload? Deft hands. Life link Io and a barik? Bulldozer. Lethality id only for People that really feel are good at the game. If you see a flank or dps insta buying Lethality, you kinda fucked, in my experience.
For cards my biggest tip? Forget about them. Default decks is enough for your first few hours as a champion. Once you get the feel of the abilities, and know the Basics, you go to make a deck with the mentality "ok, what do i need to suit MY playstyle", or just built a meme loadout like my Max knockback Ash 100% original do not steal. Or just check some guides on the character, that works too.
Paladins is a genuinely good game in its own right, regardless of the discussion if it is or isnt better than OW. It has some problems, like the servers being shit, but the rest of the experience is pretty good and *decently* balanced to boot. Good to try around, and i heard ranked its pretty ok too, but im usually not a fun of the competitive scenario. Good luck out there, Champions. VCQQ/VCQQ

What i like about Paladins more than OW are skins, maybe the visuals won't be as cool as overwatch ones, but they do have unique voicelines, ability fx, voice actors, and they are waay cheaper. Paladins had some cool crossovers like Monstercat or RWBY ones with the BEST SKINS i've seen. The reason why i changed from Paladins from OW was because there were CRAZY amounts of bugs that made the game unplayable, but now it seems like paladins got better so i might come back someday
Paladins graphics may not be as modern as OW but i think it's better that way since more people can play it even with very bad pcs (i used to play paladins with 512mb vram years ago lol), also paladins is running in unreal 3, so it explains why

It is unfortunate that paladins got hidden under the radar in a sense because of the "F2P OW clone" label, because at the core of the experience, paladins triumphed and still triumphs in many gameplay aspects over OW[2]. Tanks and Supports feel infinitely more fun and are far more diverse & skill expressive to a player's preferred playstyle, all of which gets further enhanced by the card and item systems. I personally thought OW handled DPS's better only because of how much notoriety there was behind the core cast of DPS characters in the early days of OW -- the likes of genji, hanzo, tracer, widow, etc. But all that's not to say that DPS characters on paladins were lacking, they just felt a bit more one dimensional in the grand scheme of things compared to the tanks and supports who had the option to provide more utility along with being a solid damage source and had the ability to make big plays.

    • @shankodawgy
      @shankodawgy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Paladins is way more creative with character abilities than OW. So many high mobility champions that feel super fun as the game doesn't employ the stupid hard counter mechanic. Most CCs are skill based and overly not opressive, barely any one-shots to turn your game into walking out of spawn simulator. 3 legendaries and card loadout system to tune a champion to fit your playstyle. Balance team also does really good job, unlike clueless fools at Blizz that sneak power creep after power creep and make dive unplayable into many heroes at their skill floor. I'm just super sad that Paladins is stuck with outdated engine, super buggy GUI, and trash network infrastructure. I might try new Season 6 PvE stuff, but playing Doom or Tracer into 5 CCs and 4 hard counters every damn game will def make me quit OW for good. Paladins will forever be my comfort FPS, and I hope it will become one for you too ❤

Not only are the characters kits much more original than overwatch (not the charachters. The charachters are copy paste of your standard fantasy characters) but I love the everything that cards and items allows you to do. I really don't like anti healing. I feel like they should just nerf healing across the board and remove anti healing. I hate how if you have a decent healer no one dies for the first couple rounds and then after that no one heals for shit

    • @shankodawgy

Cauterize (anti healing) makes you have to play cover more often to get out of cauterize heals at endgame meaning more strategizing. Low anti heal at the start of games usually make for longer matches to make more interesting endgames. One thing I hated the most in overwatch was that healers just felt the same throughout the game, there was no need to change playstyle other than swapping characters to counter. In paladins, you could be more aggressive at early game due to high sustain and low cauterize, then start to play more passively at endgame

while ow has better graphics an is a cleaner game, paladins has so much more options that you can do to your champion, with having different load outs an talents an how customization it is beats ow by a long shot. With ow you only have one play style that you can play around while in paladins there so much more. Devs are working on making the game more smooth an it defintly is better than what it was an the game has came very far from its begging, im also more of a fan of paladins due to the amount of champions that they have, with there variety of champions an different abilites it can deffently be difficult for a new player to learn the game but after playing the game for about a week or two you can really get the game down an understand all of the different cc's that they ect. I wouldnt say that it isnt an ecact clone of ow now they definitly to have there similarities such as solider 76 and victor, an hog an makoa, but overall they do have there differences an if you enjoy a hero shoot where you can customize your champion to your own liking then i would go with paladins but if you like learning a character with one play style then i would stick with ow, but with the current state of ow, id probably just stick with paladins.
