The Art Of Making Mistakes - Countless Fixes For My 1963 Plymouth Valiant Slant Six (And It Breaks)

  • I just wanted to go for a test drive, is that so much to ask? This is the car I've chosen for my turbo slant six project, a 1963 Plymouth Valiant Signet 200 (whatever that means) that I got up and running with MSD Atomic EFI in a previous video. It doesn't have a turbo yet, but that's another story. My plan for this episode was to get the wheels and tires swapped, tune the EFI system, make some various improvements in the engine compartment, and finally take the car for a real test drive. Naturally, the universe had other ideas.

This is so much better than 'Reality TV" because when shit happens, it happens and doesn't get edited out. And I can really relate to working on one problem and ending up down a hundred rabbit holes of more and more problems. But, carry on thy wayward son and there will be a running driving turbo Valiant when you are done. I heard it in a love song or something, so it can't be wrong. Just a little Kansas and Marshall Tucker wisdom.

The Valiant would look great with a coat of satin white Rusto. Its a super easy color and sheen to make it look good. Plus a rougher sheen is really easy to sand back down. I know he said he doesn't really want to go down that road but it would be a huge improvement.

      from the web-
      170
-The only engine that is oversquare
-Rod ratio is better than the 225 but not as good as the 198- Rod Ratio: 1.814
-Lowest peak HP and torque but known for being able to rev much higher than a 225, which changes up the low peak HP numbers. But still not tons of torque
-Tied for highest RPM at peak HP (a slant at 4400RPM probably sounds awesome!)
-Though it is smallest it is still quite sizable by todays standards
      198
      -Only engine that is "square"-ish
-Best rod ratio- Rod ratio: 1.924
-Widest RPM gap between peak torque and peak HP
-Lowest peak torque (possibly best highway economy?)
      225
      -Undersquare
-Worst rod ratio- Rod ratio 1.624
-Tons of low-end torque but doesn't like to turn nearly as high as the 170
-With all that stroke and less-than-great rod ratio the rings get a good work out.
-Seems to be most popular and readily available engine.
-Also seems to be most sought after for performance.

It's my opinion that on my 65 Valiant, only the Super 6 intake and exhaust manifolds are from a later model slant 6, and were bolted on to my car's original block, for a couple reasons: on the intake manifold, several areas of blue paint could be seen under the red paint that was there when I bought it. Late 70's and on slant sixes were painted blue, yet the intake was the only place I could see it. Any other areas of the block that still had paint were orange. Per Ed at Wildcat Mopars, the 65 Valiant engines were orange. I took the valve cover down to bare metal before repainting, no blue paint to be seen. Also, my engine's head has spark plug drool tubes, which, as you state in this video, the later heads did not have. This opinion of mine could be wrong, tho... I do want to get an EGR delete plate, the ugly EGR valve is still there, but does nothing as all the vacuum ports are blocked off.

Nice! Yes, they are very similar. Over here, the 2 and 4 doors used exactly the same nose. The Australian Valiant grilles are special. The ‘64-66 setup looks pretty similar to the US version, but for ‘63 the Australian grille is unique. You didn’t get this funky frowny face thing. It has really grown on me.

@@DeadDodgeGarage yeh the AP5 has a long grill which is the only difference pretty much besides inside to my 65 AP6 which has the two little grills with the break in the middle which I love. I have jellybean mags or some call them kidney mags. They look great my spare tyre is exactly the same as your tyres and we do call them honeycomb

Yes! The short stroke SHOULD be able to rev higher, as in a F1 car at 15,000 or whatever crazy RPM. If not mistaken that's around 2 or 2 1/2" stroke? I know the 170 can't do THAT but interested to see where you end up, without blowing out the pan! Or if....

Treat the 170 the same as a 225, as far as cam, valves and timing. What you need to watch is the fuel flow. You can get, if built right 8k rpms in a 170.

  • @oscarwalton1188

The 170 revs easy and unlike the 225 its crank shaft isn't setting in the engine oil so windage isn't as much of a issue so 170 all the way.

yeah i still don't get the whole slant 6 thing but i know how it is when you got an itch, you got to scratch it. back in the day my late great uncle and i threw together a 65 valiant with a built to sh*t 340, short shaft 833 and a 8.75 with 4.88's just to run errands around town so yeah i know what that itch feels like it's just kind if hard to imagine an itch for a slant 6 but i guess when you've done everything else than why not.....

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  หลายเดือนก่อน

Right. I’ve had that itch for like 14 years now, and an even stronger one after getting slightly into turbo Subarus about five years ago. If I just wanted to go fast, I have a built 440 in pieces. Or I’d build a blown big block Chevy. Or I’d 2JZ swap one of these things. Or I’d just buy a Hellcat. I want to do something that I find intriguing and unique. I want to see what I can do. And I want to make a slant six cool.

    Question and comment:
What sizes are those new wheels and tires? they look awesome. I need to upgrade from my 13" pizza cutter tires.
When I first got my 65 Valiant, its starter sounded like a normal old-school starter, for about 3 weeks. Then it started making the same identical clunky-crunchy sounds that yours makes. 2 days later it died completely. Replaced it with a Dakota starter, and all is right with the universe. I'm sure you (or Tom) have spare starters around...

They are 15” wheels, which will be hard to find. I know the rears are 245 wide, but beyond that I don’t remember. I think the fronts are 215s. I’m seriously kinda tired size stupid. But you should know that these barely fit, and the rear passenger still rubs.
