I, too, am very excited to see this! I knew I wanted the expandable bed, but I wasn't sure how I wanted to do it. And, bonus.....I'm heading to IKEA today! Perfect timing! Thank you so much!
This makes me SO happy! I wanted my bed to slide like this but to see it being done with the cheap ikea rails makes my day! So much lighter than so many other ways I’ve seen. Thanks!!!
Guys!! We're so stoked we found this. I've just been wondering whether anyone has ripped out and converted their U-shaped bed design into a slide-out! You're absolute legends
Brilliant, I love that you show all the problems you had during the bed build. It took three attempts before I got mine right, its very similar to yours. When my hubby (watches) me do things like this he's very critical when it goes wrong. So its nice to be reassured that its not just me. :)
I really liked the original bed layout and I probably still prefer it. However you lived with it for a long time on your travels, then changed it which makes me kind of unsure now of which way to go when I hopefully get my van this year. You guys are fun to watch but give us lots to think about. Thanks.
Fabulous video - thank you for your honesty with the mistakes! We all make them. Now you have replaced the curved slats with flat ones, is the bed comfy sleeping parallel to the slats? This is the only worry I have about this design as otherwise it is perfect for us. Many thanks indeed.
Hey Katie! Yes absolutely, now we've changed to flat slats it's much more comfortable. I think we still plan to change the mattress when back in the UK as we only bought cheap foam when we replaced the slats so might not last too long. I honestly think the gaps between the slats need to be the smallest possible so the mattress doesn't sink down between them or to have a thick mattress. 10cm foam for us before we had the extra base board that Umitcan Caravan put in wasn't thick enough and we could feel the slats through. Hope you find the perfect layout!
Yay! So pleased to see it done and working. Makes so much sense now seeing it in action. Well done guys, what a fantastic achievement to work through the issues and get it done.
We love you guys. Love the fact the videos are real and show the rough with the smooth. My favourite colour is also orange (kinda because my girls told me it was, so it now really is)….I’m currently chilling in my orange campervan hoodie. Our van gets delivered next year and will be converted-ish by summer. There’s not many TH-cam vloggers that we want to meet up with, but we can’t wait to catch up with you both. We love your energy Watch out for the pea pod campervan…we look forward to chilling and talking about all things orange 😀.
Hey David! Thanks so much 🧡 we really try to show the realities of each situation. It's easy to get caught up in only showing the good so have to remind ourselves sometimes to share the bad too. So the big question is... Will your van be orange too?? What did you go for in base vehicle? Dead excited for you and the build journey ahead! And of course we're always keen to meet up with fellow vanners so let us know when you hit the road and maybe our paths will cross someday!
We have gone for a ducato l3h2. Sadly not in orange though. We may have a green theme with naming it pea pod. Really can't wait to start the build. Hopefully we will get the van early in q1, although we haven't got a build date yet, so I'm not overly optimistic:) In the meanwhile we will continue to live van live through youtube. Keep up the great work.
Great video. Makes a refreshing change to see the problems that need to be overcome when your master plan doesn't quite work. My pull out bed was stiff to pull out where various parts rubbed. I sorted it out so it moved freely. First journey out, we went round a roundabout and the bed, complete with terrified dog, made itself as it slid out. 😂😂 So then I had to add blocks to stop it sliding out on its own. It's all a learning curve !!
Really like your design! Perfect for my needs. I would have both panels unfixed for complete access to the garage area and I'd like to see a roller/track system for the sliding mechanism. Well done!
Thanks for sharing. Had the same iterations going through my head. Plan to do the same thing, but length-wise. Means I got to put cross beams. Will be fun. 🤪
Sounds like a great plan! I would definitely recommend using flat wood for the bed slats though as the curved ones running the wrong way can be noticeable in certain sleeping positions!
@@courtsandmeeks Thanks for sharing. Our bed will also be a kids playground. The "moving"mechanism is needed for access and storage when in "driving" mode. As the bed also needs to be a playground, we will opt for the flat slats anyways, which is not a problem as we are "light weights". You sleep along the length of the van or side ways? On one video it looks like you will sleep along the length and I wonder if you can feel the difference, as the slats would be long the spine, rather than traverse?
Great, glad it was helpful. If we can make a suggestion though, we wouldn't use the bent bed slats again from Ikea for sleeping lengthways down the bed. We e just changed ours after 6 months of back ache!
Ive got exactly the same design in my 12 year old vehicle, except the bed base is solid and one just slides over the top of the other. Simple, no bother.. Perfect for opening the space for living area when not sleeping, and giving you a double bed when not needing the living area.
So good to know a similar design works for you! Gives us hope it will be good for us too 😂🤞 We're so excited for how much living space this will give us - especially as we're used to having a dinette in our old layout which gave us loads of space during the day.
Nice design and looks like it will work well. Couple of questions/suggestions: Might it be better to countersink the screws on the bed frame? As you pull out the bed the screws may cause rubbing on the underside of the mattress. Rather than moving cushions to make up the bed what about a second mattress that folds up against the back door during the day. You would then have something to lean against when using the day bed. With a little thought it should be possible to link the mattress and back to pull out flat with the bed extension.
Hey Graeme - thanks so much for your suggestions! Countersinking the screws is a great idea - they are flat head self tappers so don't stick up too much but we will see how much they fair when we get the mattress. The other issue is that bed slats arent that thick so it's quite easy for the wood to split if drilled in too deep. Something we will look at though for sure!! I'm terms of the mattress, we did talk about this and even considered a different design where the full bed was modular and hinged at the join between the two sections so a sofa back could be lifted up either facing into the van or then slid the other way and hinged so the sofa faces out the back doors. Ultimately we decided we didn't want a permanent back on the sofa area as we love having a view out of the back doors. Instead we will have a padded headboard velcroed to the back doors that makes up extra mattress pieces for when turning it to bed mode 💪
@@courtsandmeeks Yeah, I saw your earlier video and your thoughts for the sofa back, I should have realised that your full redesign would have considered that.
Loved the bed and the fun way you did the video! 🤣 Can I ask how strong the ikea bed slats are and as it’s a while since the video were they comfortable to sleep on the way you designed it with the 2 slight bows? Did any of the slats break? I’m around 16 stone so just wondering if I might need something stronger.
Really like what you've done. What's the wall cladding you're using and where's it from? / looks brilliant (link?) Oh, and you're a lovely couple. Be safe. x
Love it! This is exactly the type of bed we want in our T6 LWB. We will be having a joiner build it for us though as rubbish at diy joinery. Do you have a video of the bed made up? And where did you get the metal work from?
I don't think we do have a video of it finished - perhaps our van upgrades video from Turkey where we had some new foam and covers made (sadly not very comfy so we need a new mattress) but the bed and cushions is shown in that video I think 👌 hope the design works out for you in your T6 LWB!
hey, just wondering what those metal beam supports are? are they the mid bean ikea adjustables with some platic to help them slide? i guess this info in the previous video but couldnt find that. Thx j
Hi This is so cool. So it basically from ikea the metal supports and the slats. One of my sons is super tall 6ft5, how long does this end up being and could it be made longer do you think. Thanks 😀😀
Yep I reckon you could but you would need to make your own slats as the Ikea ones only give you so much length. After sleeping on it for 6 months now, We wouldn't recommend using the curved slats lengthways as sometimes we wake up with back pain. I would make your own flat slats out of ply and then you could do them to your own length to fit your son's height too!👍
Had the same idea and wouldn't know for sure if it would work out. And as Ikea is currently closed where I am.... So thanks for validating the idea 💡 👍 How is it holding out? Did you cut the ending of these Skorva? I was looking into rails as hangers that would allow to slide but your idea looks good. What about adding an aluminum profil or HDPE strips for the durability of the sliders? Cheers to you 👍
About the sliding bed thing, which is a great and smart concept, it's a bit weird to see you troubleshooting this. It's like troubleshooting in reverse, you're concentrating on the slats being curved and not matching. That's not the issue, what I would've done is troubleshoot the entire sliding concept and then worry what to put on top of to lay a matras on it. Troubleshoot the root problem first, not the consequences which flow from the root problem. Still you found a way out of it but the road taken was a bit weird. Also, what I would do is to have two benches opposite each other and have a slide out table underneath the bed that can be taken out so you can use it with the benches. No need to waste space on a table.
Thanks so much for the comment - this is really helpful and you're totally right! The problem was that we had already bought the slats before fully figuring out the sliding mechanism (rookie error!) So we were adamant we were going to make them work 😅
Great video! Loving the extending bed idea - we've got those metal bars too except we're having a fixed bed as our girl has the space - we love orange too!! Look forward to seeing more :D
Brilliant idea for a slider bed. Would you share the length of the slats, please? I'm in the midst of copying your technique (imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, and all that) :). Also would appreciate knowing what type of adhesive was used to adhere the slats to the metal. Cheers.
Hi Deirde, sorry we didn't get back to you! It's probably way too late now but the slats were just 2 sets of single bed slats from IKEA so I'm not sure on the length, sorry!
No worries. Thanks so much! We found the supports at IKEA, then reasoned that the slats were probably two sets of singles. IKEA was out of bed single bed slats when we were there so we will be going back once their stock comes in again. Thanks so much for your kind response! :)
@@courtsandmeeks Again, thank you. We saw that in your video but thought we might want to glue it as well as screw it in. It's probably enough just to use screws. Thank you! You two are an orange inspiration!
Hey Les, we ordered ours from efoam and then cut it ourselves but I think a proper mattress stands the test of time better. Custom mattress UK do this for boats and caravans but I don't think it's cheap!
You can drill with that mcallister just need to dril on slow speed and putting pressure starting with a small drill bit number 2 or 3, with lubricating oil (ATF for example). You should not drill metal on quick speeds.
doesn't fixing them on all sides defeat the flex - they need to move slightly when flexing, I think - just curious, trying to figure out how to contain ours. We will probably fix the end pieces and every other slat will be affixed on one end only so there's room to flex...
Just a thought, when you press down in the middle of a curved bed slat it gets longer, how will they do this if sctewed down both ends? Beds usually have plastic fittings both ends that allow the slats to slide in and out so they can get longer when you climb onto the matress otherwise its just a solid structure.
They still have give in them even though they are secured at each end. We did give this some thought and the curve allows the bounce to remain but thanks for raising the question as there's a chance we wouldn't have haha!
Hey, how did you secure the IKEA skorva to the sliding bar? The ones that don't move I mean. I have a ford transit and looking for a better way to build my bed.
Hey Andreas. Sorry for such a delayed reply, for some reason this comment went into a weird TH-cam filter we didn't know existed on our comments! We added wooden beams to the walls which the Ikea metal supports sit and slide on. I think we show them in our video prior to this one (not sure now why they aren't shown properly in the bed video!) And they are drilled through the metal cavity of the van itself so they ain't going anywhere! I've seen other people take this idea and use L brackets from Ikea (that you can apparently buy to go with the Skorva midbeams) and also L shape aluminium or steel lengths that they drilled into the wall rather than wood which is a good idea I think. I would also recommend using flat bed slats and not curved ones because you can feel the curve and it's not the comfiest bed we've ever had.
Love the bed idea, I was thinking along the same lines myself, seems such a waste having a fixed double bed. My only thought is that you will be lying in line rather than across the wooden supports.
Hey Andrew - thanks for commenting! We thought exactly the same thing about having a fixed bed taking up half of the van interior, it just seems silly. You're right about the slats running the other way to a normal bed but once there's 10cm of mattress on top we don't think it will be noticeable at all. You can't feel the slats when you lay sideways on a normal bed so we figured it's the same kind of concept!
We put wooden beams along the wall and screwed them into the metal panelling of the van. The Ikea beams are then sat on top and slide along but I would recommend putting some form of runner on the bottom of the beams as it is a bit loud!
We wondered about that but we really don't notice it very much. Because they do have a curve to them we do have an extra pillow each just to make sure our heads are in the right position and not lower than our shoulders :)
@@courtsandmeeks I wondered the same thing - the arc is designed to provide spring across, not lengthwise, we tried them like this and were not comfortable sleeping that way - princess and the pea syndrome, perhaps, lol!! If it works for you, that is great. We have to go crosswise, for us.
Could you not just stack 2 single bed mattresses and then just pull out the bed frame and slide the second mattress down to make a full double bed ? 🤔 just thought I'd throw that idea out there, if it helps 👍😉
Hey, thanks for the suggestion and sorry for the delayed reply! We decided doubling up two mattresses would make us too close to the roof when sat in sofa mode and also we'd still have to 'make the bed' fully putting the sheet and duvet on and off before doubling them up whereas all we currently have to do is move the seat cushions onto the extension and pull the sheet over. 👍 It works well for us!
Hey, thanks for the question. Do you mean the white cladding? If so that was installed after the sliding mechanism. For the cladding we built a frame that connects to the side of the van and the floor then attached the cladding to this. That allows us to have the sliding bit separate and so that the facing for the front metal beam doesn't get stuck on the white wall. Hope that helps 🧡
Not thick - a very valid question! The mattress will be one piece on the fixed part of the bed (what we're calling sofa-mode). Then the extension mattress will be made up of our cushions from our other seats in the dining/office area + extra pieces that make up a padded headboard that will be velcroed to the back doors (making a padded sofa back during the day in sofa mode). That's the theory anyway! 😂
Hi, your slide out bed is fantastic! We are definitely going to copy your idea. Could I ask where you purchased the 4 aluminium cross members from? I notice your North East accents. We live near Stockton-on-Tees and were wondering if the aluminium was available locally? If not any links would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work :-)
Hey guys! Please do - that's why we made the video. All about sharing space saving ideas. The bars are from ikea!! They are called Skorva mid beams - not the lightest at 3.6kg per bar but we thought it was worth it! Are you on instagram sharing your build? Would love to follow your progress!
@@courtsandmeeks Hi there, really enjoying the videos and this one in particular as we've been planning our bed for months to be half static and half fold down version but your idea with the sliding beams is perfect. However the website is only selling the beams at 139cm whereas our van (crafter) is 178cm across which I'm assuming is the length of your beams as the crafter/sprinter is the same. Can I ask do they have different sizes of the beams in store?
@@annhelenkvi8219 thank you very much and now you explain it more I see that they are actually telescopic. I was imagining several different sizes. Off to buy them now, thanks again.

Hi! So it looks like you've had this bed for a month maybe? I'm starting a van conversion too, and I'd love to follow this idea. Do you have any improvements or tweaks you'd make after extendedly testing it out ?
Hey! We've actually not tested it out yet as we are still building the van and not living in it whilst renovating. We're really happy with the design though and think it's gonna work great!
Sorry for the delayed reply! The pull out part is super sturdy and still resting on the wall batons that are drilled into the van metal so its the same construction technique the whole way across and works really well! Could always use rivnuts instead of long large screws like we did to bolt the bed beams into the wall metal - have seen this done before!

And we also ended up screwing in the slats into the metal beams as the Stixall didn't feel like it would stand the test of time :)
Thank you! You two are an orange inspiration!
what type of glue did you use please?
Love the idea gonna try this my self where are the metal rails from please ?
Let us know how you get on!! They are Ikea midbeams!
Do you know where I can get mattress that I can cut to my size.
Thanking you in advance.Les (Kettering)
Hey Les, we ordered ours from efoam and then cut it ourselves but I think a proper mattress stands the test of time better. Custom mattress UK do this for boats and caravans but I don't think it's cheap!
hi guys!! how did you fixed the “face” of the bed? where you put the handles :))
Hey! We pre-drilled some holes for bolts and then bolted the wooden "facing" with the handles onto the Ikea beam.
@@courtsandmeeks thank u so much!! 🥰
Just get on with the task in hand!!!!!!!!
Could you tell me how to support by. Ikea steel wood?
We put wooden beams along the wall and screwed them into the metal panelling of the van. The Ikea beams are then sat on top and slide along but I would recommend putting some form of runner on the bottom of the beams as it is a bit loud!
Will it not feel weird sleeping down the slats and not across them
We wondered about that but we really don't notice it very much.
I got another question for you :D Did you install the paneling before the bed supporting wood beams or after?
Hey, thanks for the question. Do you mean the white cladding? If so that was installed after the sliding mechanism. For the cladding we built a frame that connects to the side of the van and the floor then attached the cladding to this. That allows us to have the sliding bit separate and so that the facing for the front metal beam doesn't get stuck on the white wall. Hope that helps 🧡
@@courtsandmeeks That was a prompt response! Thank you heaps, I'll be very surely using the same design as yours, thanks for sharing!
@@mightydingo you caught me when I was in TH-cam so it's not always so fast 😂 amazing, I hope it works out for you! Let us know how you get on!
Sorry to be thick but where does the double matress go when you are in day mode.
What kind of steel dit you use
We used Ikea steel bed supports. I can't remember the name but if you search for bed supports on Ikea you will find them. Cost us £10 each I think!
@@craftycampers6256 Hi, the measurements on the beam is minimum 139 and maksimum 203 according to IKEA Website.
@@annhelenkvi8219 thank you very much and now you explain it more I see that they are actually telescopic. I was imagining several different sizes. Off to buy them now, thanks again.

We've purchased a converted van already and making our own changes to suit our needs.
Keep up the good work. We really enjoy your video updates 👍😁
Why didn't you use a rock and roll bed, then you would have correct height sofa? Much easier cheaper too.
We wanted a garage 👌🏻
Where did you guys get the metal from?
The bed strusts are from IKEA! Skorva midbeams they are called and are telescopic and extendable!
Great idea but the pull out part I’d be afraid of it not holding my weight ☹️
Sorry for the delayed reply! The pull out part is super sturdy and still resting on the wall batons that are drilled into the van metal so its the same construction technique the whole way across and works really well! Could always use rivnuts instead of long large screws like we did to bolt the bed beams into the wall metal - have seen this done before!
You nutters, ended up getting a hammer drill?! ha! Hope you're enjoying yourself :)
PS If you guys ever need help with mechanisms etc. I'm a design engineer and can throw together a few ideas if you ever need a 3rd pair of eyes :P

Great video footage . Your bed is exactly what I'm looking for help with . Just shower my partner and he said yes imediately . Job for next week . Bring it on thank you so much
Thanks for subscribing! Glad the bed design has helped you with your own build - we love how much space it gives during the day and then how easy it is to make on a nightml
Great space saving bed should be quicker to make up to :0)
Yes definitely! We didn't mind having to make the bed from dinette in the old layout but this is going to be even easier so we're happy about that!
Are you still making TH-cam videos
You need a step bit
Counter sink the screw heads!
It's not the drill it's the drill bits . Dormer hss bits would've done the job
Do realize what u bought? An impact driver is what ur needed.
Oops we were so clueless 😂
Your curved wood wouldn't fall down if they were actually screwed into place on the struts. You're making it way too hard.
You're right, we made our lives very difficult!
Lame
Well that's mean.
Surprised you didn't know how it's done
