I flew the -8 for five years and was fortunate enough in my Career to fly every model of 747 with the exception of the SP. The -8 was a common type rating with the -400 however, it required differences training. The training comprised of Computer based systems training, testing, four Virtual Procedures Training, two full motion Simulator sessions and a line check in the actual Aircraft. My first take off was out of Luxembourg at 990,000 lbs (449000kg). When I selected TOGA for the Auto throttles to set take off thrust, there was no sound in the Cockpit. My facial expression must have gave away my concern, because the Check Airman next to me said “that’s normal” and smiled. The -400 GE CF6-80C2 Engines have a very distinct growl to them when setting take off thrust. Not to hear anything from the GENEX-2B Motors was like removing one of your senses! The plane, despite being a bit nose heavy on rotation, performed magnificently. The landing technique is a bit different due to wing design and flare assist feature, but overall, it’s dream to fly. Glad you had an opportunity to enjoy the Queen of the Sky’s!
Thanks for the extra information. Yes those CF6s are a lot louder! I haven't heard a 747-400 spool up for a few years now (the last was on VH-OEJ in the last few years of it's service) although it was certainly a lot louder than this spool up!
@@PaulStewartAviationi have no problems with eletronic dimmable windows, what I wish is that there is a button / setting which prevents the flight attendant from controlling my window were I have complete autonomy over it.
Queen of the Skies 🥰🥰 I remember the days when you could do LHR to AKL via LAX and only have an hour on the ground in LAX next to the gate. A 25 hour marathon, did that many times. I then did AKL to LAX on a 777, an odd sensation after years doing it with 4 engines. I flew on a nearly empty 747 once. It leapt into the air like nothing else unlike fully loaded ones 😂😂😂

The -8 is the most graceful variant. Lufthansa's old livery is my favorite...I felt it was a timeless classic and should've served for many decades more. I am happy for you that you got to take this flight. Flying 747 upper deck is the #1 item on my bucket list. I really think this was your best review simply because it was really more about the 747 and not so much about Lufthansa's tired business class. Everyone knows it needs refreshing, but it's good to enjoy the 747 while we can.

Glad you got to check out that amazing aviation museum! It was a huge part of my childhood, living just a 45 minute drive away. That flight was also the same one where I had my first and so far only ride on the 747-8i, but on the other leg heading back to IAD. It's such a magnificent aircraft, and I clearly remember finding it to be a lot more comfortable and quieter than the -400 we took to Frankfurt a week before!
Thanks for the great footage. That 747-8 looks so much longer and larger than the 400, doesn't it? Love your footage of Greenland, too. When AirNZ used to fly LHR-LAX, I had the joy of also flying over Greenland in daylight and it was really great to feel like you were witnessing something special.

Paul that was amazing. The spool up was almost, almost, as good as the RB211's on the L1011. In 1974, I flew with my Mum and Dad for my second trip to Jolly Ole England in a Wardair 747-200. Spiral staircase and they had dishes and knives and forks too. Brought back some great memories....
When I flew on the Lufthansa 747-8i from Boston to Frankfurt, I sat in that very same seat! That flight was a dream come true for me because, in all the years I'd been flying on the 747, since 1978, that was the first time I ever sat in the upper deck. It wasn't the best business class product, but it's a flight I'll never forget.

I rode one of these upstairs seats FRA-YYZ about 7 years ago, and the 'let's play footsy' seating was class-trailing even at that time. It was still an adventure to be upstairs on a 747, and by the time I have the resources and time to do that journey again, Lufthansa might be able to take me in an A350 out of MUC in its Allegris seating. I wait in hope.
I just had my first 747-8 experience LAX-FRA last Monday. Economy class was unfortunately very unimpressive except for a great view of the wing, especially compared to A350/787. I'm flying back in PE, which is not much of an upgrade but still hopefully is better. Business upgrade was approx $700 each way which seemed pretty reasonable, but the seat and food looked very unimpressive so I did not bite this time.

Hi, that looked like a great flight, I've never really flown on a B747 and only God knows whether I ever will, I did get the opportunity to step onboard one as an airport ground staff. It really is a massive and Beautiful Aircraft.
The supermarket bag amenity kit is seasonal / not permanent. When I flew on the LH 747-8 FRA-MEX I received a Christmas-themed bag, which had a bell at the end of the string used to close the bag. BTW, I flew seat 85K... one of the best flights ever.
You have to go to the C gates for the United polaris lounge before the flight. That's the move when flying any star alliance carrier in business or first so you get the a la carte dining. I really wanted to fly upper deck on the 747-8 with Korean air on my way back from Korea but didn't get selected for business class award space while on the waitlist (sigh). I had to suck it up in Economy class.
@@PaulStewartAviation I meant the cushion but also the actual legroom (I’m 1.93m) and there is no tight spot for the feet - at least you can move them upwards. The upper deck I nice and small compared to the lower one as well.
The B747-8 - the best 747 because its engines are better than any 747 engines ever before, and it's longer, too - the world's longest airliner currently in service. Plus, I flew economy in these, I've seen many complaints about its economy product, but the plain and simple truth is, I thoroughly enjoyed both economy flights in LH 747-8. The food was definitely some of the best economy meals I've had.
Germans have a tough arse, that's why the toilet paper is so thick. Hahahahaha.... You're lucky there's no seat seat neighbour, if you had I'd venture the experience would have been very different. I do strangely miss the 747 because it was always such a precursor to an overseas adventure. For a while in the early 2000s. the Malaysia Airlines 747-400 was my second home as I was always on it every other month shuttling between KUL and SYD / MEL for a couple of years. Glad to see your flight reviews again after all this time.
Definitely prefer the new livery. Although it reminds me slightly of LOT’s livery being the basic colour scheme. In saying that, the simple colouring is actually what appeals to me.

HERE’S THE VERDICT: 1 FABULOUS views of that 747-8 arriving at 2:45 also I do like the new livery more than the “current” old livery but I don’t like the fact that the engines aren’t also black they should be if you ask me. 😬 Howrver I’m still a major fan of the 1970s original livery on the Lufthansa 747-100 like seen recreated beautifully on (D-ABYT) their Retro 747-8 which I hope to be on! Fingers crossed 🤞 2: At 3:08 The Turkish Airlines lounge is much better for views and WAY BETTER than the LH lounges at IAD except for the boarding directly from the LH lounge that is cool and pretty unique although I always prefer air stairs to jet bridges especially on massive wide body jets like LH often does in Frankfurt 🇩🇪 3 I def would avoid the downstairs Biz class at 3:51 and opt for the UPSTAIRS for two reasons one, it is better and spacier till they get the new cabins at least and two the novelty of it and relative rarity of sitting UPSTAIRS on a 747 or any plane for that matter! 😂🎉 4 At 4:02 I miss those spiral stairs on the 747 and I wanted to see them come back at least on the LH Retro 747-8 that’ve been cool! 😎 4 What a FABULOUS, GORGEOUS view of that 747-8 wing and sunset at 6:41 onwards! Finally 5 At 7:08 the food 🥘 🍽️ on that LH Biz class looks AMAZING (Well especially to someone who’s only EVER flown in Economy it looks like a real step up) also duck always feels like a FANCY way to start a meal especially with truffle oil! Also that salmon fillet (fill-a) looks not as good but sure seems like a bad choice to order fish on a plane as I’ve heard it can often taste it dense and fishy so hopefully it was okay. I would’ve ordered a steak 🥩 or some other German treat! Overall TRULY EXCELLENT video mate I loved all of it! Cheers 🥂 again mate! I'm sure you'll be fine. The Boeing 747 design has been perfected over 60 years of flying so if there were any structural problems, they'd know before now. Just remember that they are designed to bend and squeek a little when you takeoff so don't worry about that.

Both LH schemes are terrible IMO, far too bare. There is/was a 748 floating around in a retro lively though that is much better though. Disagree with you on the 748 being the perfect shape btw. I think the upper deck is too long and the -400 got the shape the best. Though i like the bigger engines of the -8. And sadly you really can't beat the spool-up noise of the RB211s of BA and QF either 🥲
When Lufthansa does in fact bring out the new Business Class product on the 747-8, I'd love to fly on it. I've flown the 742, 743, 744 (and 744ER which I count as a sub-variant) but I've yet to fly on the -8. I've also yet to properly experience the upper deck of a 747 so I'd love to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

For a while in the early 2000s. the Malaysia Airlines 747-400 was my second home as I was always on it every other month shuttling between KUL and SYD / MEL for a couple of years. Glad to see your flight reviews again after all this time.

Definitely prefer the new livery. Although it reminds me slightly of LOT’s livery being the basic colour scheme. In saying that, the simple colouring is actually what appeals to me.

HERE’S THE VERDICT: 1 FABULOUS views of that 747-8 arriving at 2:45 also I do like the new livery more than the “current” old livery but I don’t like the fact that the engines aren’t also black they should be if you ask me. 😬 Howrver I’m still a major fan of the 1970s original livery on the Lufthansa 747-100 like seen recreated beautifully on (D-ABYT) their Retro 747-8 which I hope to be on! Fingers crossed 🤞 2: At 3:08 The Turkish Airlines lounge is much better for views and WAY BETTER than the LH lounges at IAD except for the boarding directly from the LH lounge that is cool and pretty unique although I always prefer air stairs to jet bridges especially on massive wide body jets like LH often does in Frankfurt 🇩🇪 3 I def would avoid the downstairs Biz class at 3:51 and opt for the UPSTAIRS for two reasons one, it is better and spacier till they get the new cabins at least and two the novelty of it and relative rarity of sitting UPSTAIRS on a 747 or any plane for that matter! 😂🎉 4 At 4:02 I miss those spiral stairs on the 747 and I wanted to see them come back at least on the LH Retro 747-8 that’ve been cool! 😎 4 What a FABULOUS, GORGEOUS view of that 747-8 wing and sunset at 6:41 onwards! Finally 5 At 7:08 the food 🥘 🍽️ on that LH Biz class looks AMAZING (Well especially to someone who’s only EVER flown in Economy it looks like a real step up) also duck always feels like a FANCY way to start a meal especially with truffle oil! Also that salmon fillet (fill-a) looks not as good but sure seems like a bad choice to order fish on a plane as I’ve heard it can often taste it dense and fishy so hopefully it was okay. I would’ve ordered a steak 🥩 or some other German treat!
Overall TRULY EXCELLENT video mate I loved all of it!

I’m a fearful flyer and taking this rite on Thursday with Lufthansa. So anxious and I hope no turbulence 😢
I'm sure you'll be fine. The Boeing 747 design has been perfected over 60 years of flying so if there were any structural problems, they'd know before now. Just remember that they are designed to bend and squeek a little when you takeoff so don't worry about that.

Hi Paul .. thought of you recently when spotting a Lufthansa 747 leaving Sydney Airport circ 6pm, 3 weeks ago , couldn't believe my eyes!!
Then a second landing a few days later at 6:30ish am , I was so happy to see them.

Yes there was paid wifi that was free for first class only.
Did you find row 88 noisy as it is so close to the galley/lavs? Debating which row to choose for a flight in September on this aircraft.

I guess business class is akin to promoting obesity via pre departure lounges and multiple meal options on board. Anyhow interesting viewing.
Both LH schemes are terrible IMO, far too bare. There is/was a 748 floating around in a retro lively though that is much better though.
Disagree with you on the 748 being the perfect shape btw. I think the upper deck is too long and the -400 got the shape the best. Though i like the bigger engines of the -8.
And sadly you really can't beat the spool-up noise of the RB211s of BA and QF either 🥲
The B747-8 engines are better in every respect than any engines on any previous 747 😎
When Lufthansa does in fact bring out the new Business Class product on the 747-8, I'd love to fly on it. I've flown the 742, 743, 744 (and 744ER which I count as a sub-variant) but I've yet to fly on the -8. I've also yet to properly experience the upper deck of a 747 so I'd love to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.
