That's because many authors write in a style suited to them, not the exam board. They are perfectionists and some of the language devices that needs to be used to meet the criteria are old school for them as some authors would take a more advanced approach to describing the scene. Though yes it is hard, I will make this my second question as it gives a lot of marks.
It's because they want to check your knowledge of fiction and non-fiction texts. That is why Language paper 1 is fiction and Language paper 2 is non-fiction.
Hi Mr Bruff. I was wondering if you could do a little 2 minute video on the main words for Question 5 Paper 1? (basically a judicious word bank) Many Thanks.
I got the highest in my set for the story question. I did some disturbing story Imao but disturbing stories tend to be more interesting than happy stories.
That single piece of writing was fantastic. Got my brain reigniting cylinders in reflecting on how bland and garbage my own work has been. Thank you for sharing it.
How on earth do you do a narrative? For me, descriptions are easy, you just talk about what's there in a really streched-out, fancy way. But a narrative? How on earth am I gonna make a story out of a picture of a field or wall or something?
i think: In source A, the writer uses 'quote' to show poverty/suffering, showing it is due to their own ignorance. Similarly/contrastingly, the use of a simile in 'quote' in Source B shows this in a different light, as the writer displays the events as 'different thing'
Thank you for this, I will go and have a look at the sample! Btw another very descriptive and beautiful novel is all the light we cannot see by Anthony Doer
Omg mr bruff I totally failed my English literature it was a disaster for me but please do a video on how to get a grade 6 in English langange🙏🏻I want to know what I need to include in my writing nd what I need to pick out from the extract
MrBruff, Your TH-cam channel is the best and i like watching all ur vids. I was watching all of your amazing tutorials and wondering who you were because you are so gifted and talented. You are like the master of English. I mean like more than an expert. Every video you make is either helpful to me or entertaining and and I love it! You deserve a lot more than 100,000 subscibers. I was expecting at least a million or possibly more as your video helps most people. I've been recently watching back through your videos and your content is great, I enjoy it. You are such a helpful person and I honestly do hope you rapidly grow into something big because you deserve it Just do what you're doing and you'll become successful and please don't change. I would like to learn a little more about you like more other subjects. If you cannot, at least i can now MASTER English!
Hi Mr Bruff. I know you focus mainly on AQA, but I was wondering if you had any tips for expository writing, which is in WJEC Paper 1. There will be a choice of 2 questions and they'll either be descriptive, narrative or expository. I hadn't considered that there could be 2 expository questions, in which case I will be very stuck. I just don't understand what to do for them. An example expository question is: “When I was young I thought that money was the most important thing in life; now that I am old I know that it is.” (Oscar Wilde). Write an essay explaining why money is important to teenagers.
Hi. In P1Q5, would it matter if the candidate wrote a grade 9 description that didn't seem to relate to the picture stimulus given? Will a loose link suffice if the writing is excellent? Thank you 🙂
SSLMPFLOE SENSES SENTENCE TYPES LEXICAL FEILD METAPHORES/SIMILIES PUNCTUATION FALLACY LENGTH OF SENTENCES AND PARAS OPENINGS OF SENTENCES EMOTIVE LANG you can also use onomatopoeia, repetition, alliteration, and EMOTIVE LAMG
If the question is one where it says ‘ write a story beginning with………….’ Do you have to start with exactly the quote given or manipulate it a bit to suite you and the story. Thanks sir
Rohan Sahota My teacher says to pick description because when you write a narrative we tend to focus too much on diologue and little on description/ sentence length/word choice etc.
Mellow Nite yeah I think I do that too as when I am writing a narrative I think I focus too much on the action and plot and trying to make things happen which will not get me as many marks, thanks!
Hi Sir can I ask a quick question, it's not related to this vid but... Is tense a structural device? I know switching to a flashback for example would be, but what if there were suddenly present tense verbs in an extract that was in past tense, could you then say this structural technique makes a danger feel imminent perhaps? I was just doing a practice paper 1 question 3 and was wondering, thank you!:)
Hi Sir, Would it be wise to think of characters/a vague plot in preparation of the writing? I think if we have a small plan of what to write, it might be easier, but I'm not sure
Simply Beka that's exactly what my school told us to do, they helped us create a few stories we could apply to a range of questions and then we won't be worrying about the plot during the exam :)
+Jimmy Russels yes but his punctuation is deliberately crafted in a way that won't help at gcse! No speech marks. Almost no punctuation at all. Amazing author though
Oh, that was simply a personal recommendation. For this, I would say Fyodor Dostoyevsky would be the best for looking at the use of complex sentence structures
Maya because then it would be a narrative with no speech, so if the question was a descriptive you wouldn't be answering the question, so would be considerably marked down.
Maya no, 3rd person is she/he, for descriptive writing you mainly talk about inanimate objects not people and definitely not from the perspective of a person. Descriptive writing has no story, just imagine you are describing a picture in detail, with no plot or characters as that is narrative writing

Man like Mr Bruff saving so many English GCSE's
ree
Even if an author took the exam they'd still probably not get full marks in it, that's how hard it is.
When was this? Where can you read it?
Ive just checked my exam timetable nd it says I have two different English language exams does any one know y we have two??
because theres two english language exams
It's because they want to check your knowledge of fiction and non-fiction texts. That is why Language paper 1 is fiction and Language paper 2 is non-fiction.
Hi Mr Bruff. I was wondering if you could do a little 2 minute video on the main words for Question 5 Paper 1? (basically a judicious word bank) Many Thanks.

@Laural Campbell -Amazing. Thank you so much.
You can get a word bank with descriptions off of Mr Bruff's english lang sample book. Its for subject terminology tho...
Video starts at 2:10
I LOVE UR CHANNEL and i love how realistic u r . u dont expect students to produce an award winning peice of descriptive writing .
I got 32/40 in last exam but that's cause on the spot I thought of a sick story idk if I can do it again
ah same i was so proud of my story : D
Anonymous omg that's so good !
Honestly same. I don't think I can do that again T.T

i did my english language exam in year 10. got a grade 6, i'm re taking it this year
bodysoaps i got a 6 in year 10 yesterday😂.(for literature) doing language today 😝
How on earth do you do a narrative? For me, descriptions are easy, you just talk about what's there in a really streched-out, fancy way. But a narrative? How on earth am I gonna make a story out of a picture of a field or wall or something?
they'll be a grey bird and I would just be there like wow the wings are so big floppy floppy
Basically you get 5 cheese graters and combine them with chicken cheese balls and divide them by 8 and there you go
I was wondering how much detail to go into on Q2 of both language papers? I always seem to overthink it, or not write the relevant information.
i think:
In source A, the writer uses 'quote' to show poverty/suffering, showing it is due to their own ignorance. Similarly/contrastingly, the use of a simile in 'quote' in Source B shows this in a different light, as the writer displays the events as 'different thing'
then about 3-4 paragraphs? whatever you can write in ~10 mins
3 paragraphs only that are very short. 3 key ideas in each.
Mrbuff is just raising the grade boundaries lol

How many pages do you suggest we write for the narrative/descriptive writing?
RD Nation my teacher said no more than 2 pages
alright thanks
This descriptive writting reminds me of a spanish author called Carlos Ruiz Zafon he is amaizing everyone should check it
Would you recommend doing descriptive or narrative?
there won't necessarily be a choice - there might be two of one type.
Rohan Sahota our teacher says to pick narrative if you can because it's easier to do and get marks
chloe and jasmine craft Thanks I will do that if I get the choice to.

Early morning revision....exam today!
natasha chisoko lol same
Excellent video.
Thanks!
Is descriptive writing English Language or English literature?
It's examined under English Language.
Hi Sir,
Would it be wise to think of characters/a vague plot in preparation of the writing? I think if we have a small plan of what to write, it might be easier, but I'm not sure
Simply Beka
Depends what you're writing- character description is mostly used in the narrative writing task which most people find easier
Simply Beka that's exactly what my school told us to do, they helped us create a few stories we could apply to a range of questions and then we won't be worrying about the plot during the exam :)
Jade Damn I miss Life Is Strange
Prisons a fun place
Tom DW I miss it too! Second one is on the way though :)
thank you sm!!
No problem!
Adjectives. Lots of adjectives, with a whole load of metaphors and simile. Try and pack in alliteration and any technique, even where it doesn't fit.
Would this book count as a descriptive or a narrative
Is it true that we cant use the word 'I' in descriptive essay?
This is the video that gave me an A+ little sis
Anyone else like videos before they see them for youtubers they like?
just for comments not really, I like at the end once I actually know I like the video, because sometimes even the best TH-camrs' videos can be trash 🚮
What an interesting topic to have a conversation about.
Hashim Ahmed ikr lol

Chris good luck! You will do well
Chris Don't worry, I'm Chinese and I am doing literature and language tomorrow, lol I've only studied in UK since year 10

Chris Yeahh :/ Fingers crossed for tommorrow! I did the Spanish gcse as well

this man is no-ting
Any cormac McCarthy book ever: that will help.
+Jimmy Russels yes but his punctuation is deliberately crafted in a way that won't help at gcse! No speech marks. Almost no punctuation at all. Amazing author though

Read a lot. That’s it.
did anyone else read ahead and think it said "china potnoodles" rather than "poodles"
omg this is such a good book ...
Can you do descriptive writing in past tense
Yes!
This isn't descriptive writing, you can't write in first person for descriptive writing and would get considerably marked down...
Tess marsh Why can't you?
Maya because then it would be a narrative with no speech, so if the question was a descriptive you wouldn't be answering the question, so would be considerably marked down.
Tess marsh 3rd person for descriptive writting then?
Maya no, 3rd person is she/he, for descriptive writing you mainly talk about inanimate objects not people and definitely not from the perspective of a person. Descriptive writing has no story, just imagine you are describing a picture in detail, with no plot or characters as that is narrative writing
