I struggle with timing a lot and neither of us are allowed to take our wrist watches and it's very difficult for me to tell the time on clock ..this very soul- killing. Thanks mr.bruff very helpful
@@idrk1507 hello yes! I ended up getting 8 in English Literature and 8 in English Language! I also now study English Literature at A-Level and recently got an A in my January mocks (it took lots of hard work though!)
I have a tip - more so for English language, to do with timing. Obviously look at the recommended timings as a start point, but don’t necessarily stick to them. In class and your revision, figure out how long it takes you to be satisfied with an answer you’ve written and/or to complete the response. For example, for question 5, you only really need about 3 sides of quality writing to get top marks on both papers. 1 side, in the paper booklets (because it inefficiently takes less space up) will take probably a maximum 10 minutes if you’re a competently quick/ medium pace writer, so may only take you 30 minutes to do, excluding a good 5 minutes planning at the start. I advise everyone takes the whole 15 minutes to read the extract given, because a lot of people will read it quickly to get extra writing time and then not understand it leading to wasted time reading it again for the questions. What everyone should do is spend 15 minutes, reading it carefully and slowly and after any time the writer does something well, a good word or simile for example, annotate the impression it gives you. Do this as much as you can and I promise it will really benefit you as you’ll never run out of ideas to use and for questions 2, 3 and 4 you’ll already have an entire arsenal of points you’re going to make, so using that 15 minutes well can effectively plan your answer to everything. For question 1, I doubt it’ll take 5 minutes, so that’s also a bit of extra time you have, but don’t rush it and make sure you are answering the question. People can also usually write enough quickly for the language questions on both papers, so gage how long it takes to do that and stick to it. What I’ve noticed though, is that it’s usually the structure and summary questions people struggle on time for. For both, Mr Bruff has great videos on how to answer. As for amount of writing, they’re both 8 marks, however people always tend to go off topic so will write a lot of unneeded information, focussing on language when you’ll get no credit. Constantly question yourself whether you’re writing about language, and if you are, stop, unless you can make a very good point linking it to structure. For the summary, you only need a very brief answer. So, in one sentence, get straight to the point, by giving a quote and what it shows and then give a detailed 2 sentence inference in the point you’re trying to make. As for structure, I know it’s very hard to time it correctly, so if you can get time pockets from other questions, you may have longer to answer for it. In summary, learn how quickly it takes you to answer specific questions (and it will vary between people), always use the whole 15 minutes to carefully read the extracts and remember, it’s quality over quantity, always.
No in my opinion shutting down all of UK schools for potentially until the virus goes down is stupid, we haven't even been through the peak of it, and you can stay at home if you wanted to I'm sure the school will understand.
I'm year 11 and I'm worried about getting a 4 or 5, is there any advice with revision and the exam in general as I'm thinking I may not pass, also which videos of yours should I watch to help with language
@@ravenwhite6843 That first point is key. I'm also stuck on a 6 and my teacher keeps telling me it's because I need to give multiple interpretations for every/most examples.
hi Mr Bruff, Your videos have been really good. They got me started on a subject I knew very little about. I sat the exam last year and got a grade 9. I can hardly remember what the text was about - i doubt i even fully understood it at the time as the time pressure was crippling - a man, his wife and daughter in a car... it was raining...something fell off and the girl was sent back for it... do you happen to know the title of the book and the name of the author? I'd like to read it - see if it pans out the way I thought it would.
Identify the areas from your marks that need more work and target that part of the exam through the videos on my channel as well as listening to your teacher's feedback and your own revision.
Is there a video that gives the effects of language/structure techniques? Because I can spot the features but honestly if I read alliteration for example it doesn’t have an effect on me so I struggle with this part of the question?
See my animated video on paper 1 question 2. There is no ‘set’ effect of any device. Your comments need to be specific to the extract. One approach is to ask yourself ‘what is the specific effect the writer is trying to achieve in the extract’ and then explain how that effect is achieved.
Mr Bruff, are you going to make videos on Never Let Me Go (its an aqa text) - I said to my teacher I don't want to do it as a text because you don't have videos on it. She didn't listen, so all I can do is to beg you to consider making them. Thanks!
Gary The 🐌 I don’t see where I asked for your opinion but I was suggesting to mr bruff to maybe make a video on how to achieve this as many people have requested things like this not just me
Lolll Hello it’s literally a common thing people say as a joke wdym lmao. Get back to me when you’re actual,y on a good grade XD lol and you even like your own comments
They are aimed at students sitting the AQA exams but there will be some crossover on the literature content in particular that would still be helpful to you.
Tactics_VIPERz easy. I got an 8 and I did 2 hours a week of really intense useful revision. Buttttt... I have an amazing teacher. I’d suggest you do like 45 mins a day really focused- no phone
Daniel Bridglington how do you revise what because there’s so many things for english. I’ve only made flash cards for 2 poems, but I’ve still got macbeth, Christmas carol, inspector calls, and the language paper to worry about
Tactics_VIPERz okay so Macbeth , Inspector calls and Christmas carol learn like 6 quotes in mad detail that you can apply to any question. Learn generic structure points that you can throw in too. Learn writers intentions e.g to criticise society at the time (making that up) and context and BIG PICTURE e.g mr birling symbolises Priestley criticism of the capitalism of the older generation. Watch mr bruffs stuff tho and get some guides. It seems a lot but trust me just start now and you’ll do bits. If you learn sophisticated stuff and use it well you’ll sound good in essays.
John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

yes, just has to not be a smart watch
@@priest4467 no, you cannot have a watch (at least in UK)

what sasha said, you are allowed
we have a digital clock in our hall so it makes it easier
In short :
-Plan your answers
-Watch your timing
-Ask yourself WHY has the writer used this (language technique)? What is the effect?
you got 34/40 in creative writing piece right? (I saw you from another video). I hope your real examsn went well

Wrong. There is no document that says that. Also, it's HUGELY unlikely that exam season will be delayed.
The goatlender is right, also its not just year 11s that exist
The Goaltender Boris Johnson states that they may have to come to the delayed phase which may cause schools to shut therefore delaying exams season
We might as well go on with our revision as normal , and not rely on the outbreak of this pandemic.
