I've always enjoyed how the Federation, despite being the "good guy" faction, were often very politically corrupt, money-driven, and closed off to radical new ideas such as newtypes. Zeon would likely be seen as the good guys if their methods weren't so cruel and extreme.
Honestly Zeon vs Federation really reminds me of Nazi Germany vs Soviet Russia.
you're wrong about federation being a good guy. you have to know that in the gundam universe there is no side of faction who is good and bad. the only thing that exist in the war between federation and zeon is the winner and loser . who win is the righteous and who lose is the one who is in the wrong

Idk Zeon's core central Philosophy seems to have the same fundamental flaws as Marxism. Namely it assumes a new evolutionary development (marxism assumed technological development) will invalidate all known previously recorded details about human nature creating an assumption that group A are all fundamentally good no matter what, while Group B are fundamentally detrimental and need to be forced to accept the "truth" that group A will all instinctively know and live by without fail.
The Philosophy that Zeon was built on itself, despite the good nature of its creator, neccessitates cruelty, and use of force against earthnoids at a minimum. Because the ideology is fundamentally confrontational and then more they marked something as "sacred" applying a broad cart blanch morality that makes one side of the confrontation good and the other thus evil. In Nazism, Marxism, Jihadism, the Crucades, they all share the same fundamental philosophical formula, a conflict between groups with a precieved or actual slight from one to the other, and a moralizing of group tribalism. For Zeon Spacenoid, particularly Newtypes are the moral future of humanityand all things that stand with earth are killing humanity, Marxism the Proletariat are always somehow good and just while all others are evil, Naszism the Arians are just civilization builders while all others are Judaic civilization destroyers, Jihadism the followers of the Islamic Faith, the Crucades the Crucaders themselves so long as they serve the Pope.
If it had been just about Spacenoid independence, or just thinking Earth was sacred and needed to be cared for. The sheer amount of death Zeon caused could have been lessened if not avoided, heck maybe even keeping the Zabis out of power could have been possible (unlikely, but actually possible)

This story needs a continuation.
It does paint a picture that early on that the federation had no idea what they were doing in regards to newtypes, while some of zeon's research could be called abusive the federation feels downright moronic. Which suppose does fit with how newtype research developed with things such as the EXAM, HADES, and Cyrber newtypes being developed instead of more actual ones. Makes me wonder why they didn't hold on tighter to Amuro and drag him in for testing/dissection as one of the few "stable" newtypes they had.
If I had a guess outside of plot armor, Amuro was too big of a celebrity within the Federation. Too many high up people well regarded Amuro and to just callously throw him into a lab or god forbid 'dissect him' would bring the wrath of many upon them they didn't want. You can imagine Bright and the other former White Base crew, and all the servicemen and women SAVED by Amuro that survived would go berserk seeing him being mistreated.
Plus if the 'dissection' turned up nothing, then they just chopped up their best and so far only known Newtype Ace for nothing.
add the fear of the unknown, the Federation probably felt it was better to keep him under observation, especially as Amuro was frankly done with fighting and didn't really put up much of a fight while being under a sort of house arrest as long as he was left to deal with his PTSD in peace.
The last bit of 'why' they didn't study Amuro, the old types despite being forced to acknowledge Newtypes were dragging their feet despite knowing being ignorant of Newtypes would lead to woe.
The U.C. is kinda full of sinister idiots in high places.
Considering that their knowledge about new type isn't as good as Zeon. They had to rely on what so far "worked". Remember that Amuro never had any formal training when he first entered the cockpit of RX-78-2, and was able to perform something normal pilots cannot do on his first battle. To them, this was a sure way method to find a new type.
The Federation tries to replicate this as to see if exposing someone to great danger would bring out the newtype in them. Calling it moronic is a bit too much, and calling Zeon's experiment abusive is watering it down a bit as they killed plenty of new type candidates. Both sides are humans, and they can get scummy as they can get.
As for Amuro not being a lab rat in the later years, He is an Icon. During Zeta, he was only confined by feds with agents surrounding him. I've read somewhere he made appearances in academies, military bases, and other ceremonies to keep morale high. Turning him into a lab rat would cause suspicion and distrust to the government. I could be wrong, but they also should've alot of data from him for cyber newtype research without the need of laboratory confinement.
As others have stated, Amuro was a celebrity and had more use as a "war hero" for propaganda purposes than a lab rat after the One Year War. Also, in some ways, the Federation were also afraid of Amuro, to a point where they constantly spied on him during Zeta. They didn't know what exactly a Newtype was capable of doing and likely figured Amuro would be able to avoid capture easily by predicting it. Therefore, even though they spied on him constantly, they also treated him decent enough so that he might be appeased enough not to actually consider fighting against them.

In Gundam origins the Federation newtype research team at Jaburo wanted to study Amuro further, but doing so would damaged the precious Gundam pilot of the white base, this they end initial testing with giving Amuro some medication (later Sayla told him those ain’t good for him) and search for more expendable test subjects.
In Zeta Define, the federation perform basic test on Amuro thru simulators before moving to cyber newtype research. Amuro being the federation hero is more valuable as an icon and MS test instructor under house arrest.
The missing link and Aggressor story manga be having expendable war orphans testing out the relatives of the Exam system, while Blue destiny story have actual federation pilots test out the Exam machines.
Ah Gundam Ecole du Ciel.....its sad that the novel was discontinued and there was no proper ending :(
Less discontinued and more like Mikimoto got sidetracked with Macross The First which kinda screwed up Ecole big.

I've seen the manga listed as discontinued, ongoing and on hiatus on various sites. Japanese wikipedia has it listed as being on hiatus, so there's always the chance that it'll continue :/

Ecole was suppose to be rebooted according to Mikimoto back in 2018 following his apology but that never happened.

I actually got this manga back when it was being released. Its been so long. I'm gonna have to re-read that. I always viewed this as canon as well.

Ecole du Ciel was a pretty epic manga
This manga was my introduction to a Gundam and UC and I'm forever thankful for it.

Here’s a lore idea what about the moonlight butterfly turn a gundam? I heard it used 20% of its power and became so big the gundams span was as far from earth to Jupiter and it destroyed the solar system. Maybe can you do a video about it?

I remembered starting École du Ciel a long time ago but stopped for some reason, i did enjoyed the story despite not having real battle (so far) and looking like a highschool drama. I also really liked the art style even if it look way different to what i'm used for a Gundam manga. Now there's so many Gundam Mangas i discovered to even know where or when to start. put i'll put this one up amongs the first.
I like how Ironically this video came up as I was rewatching the entire UC era shows in chronological order, not by release but by timeline and my god Zeta Gundam has to be the longest damn show there is and I'm not done yet I have to grind through ZZ, Unicorn possibly and Turn A Gundam which is going to kill me lol The Universal Century is just too damn big of a tale!

École du Ciel takes place in my home city. It makes me and every Gundam fan here happy. I have to read it.

Ecole is also the first and only Gundam manga I ever bought. Very notable is that it is the 2nd Gundam entry to feature a female protagonist (the 1st one is Tiel's Impulse)
Ecole also has cool and unique MS designs, especially Asuna and Erisia's respective signature MS'es. Lastly, due to Mikimoto being the illustrator, Asuna has a big resemblance to Noriko from Gunbuster.

This Mangá is very good.
It is interesting to see the Federations side working (usually failing) with Newtype research. On a positive note, nice to see more stories involving Guntanks. Especially since the Guntank does not get much love after 08th MS Team.

Anyway I picked up an old Italian translation at my local comic book shop, sadly it wasn't the complete series. I hope they will reprint it, since lately the Italian manga industry is unloading a shitton of mecha mangas, including the Gundam series.

Wait so no one in the federation questioned the people that were supposed to refit the suits for paint....they just ignored that....and don’t call off the exercise, that ruins the story for me, imagine your superiors telling you it’s training and then halfway through the exercise they say, “just kidding it’s live fire now, and you don’t get a real weapon.”
