I think the critiques of her field are much later, like Woz era. But that’s so ridiculous considering that she essentially played three to four different generations. Just because the last one wasn’t as strong as the ones before (at least top 5) doesn’t mean shit. She’s survived all those generations and when she dominated in 2002-3 women’s tennis had never been stronger.

@@PravoslavniVitez Grafs era was pathetic. She rarely faced any competition, Everett was on her way out and Navratilova was too. It wasn’t until Monica Seles came along that anyone really challenged Graf. And Seles thumped her good. Right before the “incident “ Seles had started to routinely beat Graf. Serena definitely had more competition than Graf. Name 10 ladies that actually challenge Graf I dare you.

Yeah similar skill set to Sharapova but her strokes were even more sound and she had variety and was great at the net. It’s really too bad she didn’t have killer instinct because she really was a 5-7 level slam athlete at least.

    • @jobuck879

@@JamesFrew1 Davenport did gave great ground strokes but her movement was piss poor. Especially from side to side. If an opponent tried to go toe to toe with Davenport and didn’t move her around, Lindsay could match them and often out hit them easily. But Serena and Venus would move her around to expose her limited movement.

What a MATCH! I really admire Lindsay's precision & power and simply her attitude at the end of the match. Lindsay apparently respected SERENA'S game and one sees the respect
is mutual. THIS IS REAL TENNIS. SERENA became the BEST by playing the BEST.

Lindsay is 25, and Serena 20. Both adorable young women, so fit, with so much energy and talent. At the peak of their powers. Even at 20, Serena already has phenomenal shoulder and upper back muscles, unequalled among female players, including sister Venus. And, at this young age, her strong thighs give her speed and mobility (but not the grace, agility and beauty of Venus). And she has a beautiful swing and snap of the wrist in her serve. The toss is slow and low, and she hits the ball at its highest point, before the descent, hence when the ball is practically motionless at its apex. Venus does the same too, even better. Too many players toss the ball too fast and too high and lose accuracy in control at the hit point (ex: Sharapova).

One of the commentators here (an Aussie) made a brief observation that he felt the way to play Serena was to get as many balls back as possible. Now, near the end of her career, that turned out to be prescient advice because whatever their style of play, the opponents who just kept putting balls back in the court were the most successful against her.

One of these Aussie commentators said something very prescient, that he felt the way to play Serena was to get as many balls back as possible. In hindsight, if you look back, no matter their style of play, the players she had the toughest time against did exactly that. Trying to hit through her rarely worked.
