This was the best era of women's tennis. So many big stars with big games, big personalities, and epic rivalries.
This is what actual depth on the tour looked like. Most top seeds making the business end of tournaments, every top 10 player having won at least a GS or Tier 1, and full of rivalries. If a player wanted to get into the top 10, they had to have consistent strong results and actually go through the players ahead of them because draws wouldn't fall apart.
I liked the era before this a lot more, you know, before tennis sounded like bad porn movies.
was literally just thinking this as i was watching, the williams sisters, hingis, davenport, capriati, mauresmo, seles was still in the mix, henin and clijsters were breaking into the major ranks of the game, this was when i got in to tennis and it was an epic time for women's tennis.

They were both crushing the ball!, and no SCREECHING. lol. I always loved Lindsey's strokes. But Serena's power, accuracy, mobility and serve were always a bridge too high for Lindsey. Great match.
I agree. Lindsey was a powerful, accurate ball striker too, with great timing on the ball, but she could never match Serena's mobility and athleticism. When you look at old clips of a young Serena, i always think she's built more like a 100/200-meter sprinter than a tennis player. Incredible athlete.

Adding to the comments about this as the golden era in women's tennis, I wanna emphasize the aestaetics of these players' games.... I can't really think of any player RN who's getting near this. Sure, Jabeur has a beautiful game, and i think Swiatek does too, and Kvitova, but look how fluid everything looks here. The service movement and forehands of Serena and Lindsay, it's really artistic.

at this point in tennis, the older girls couldnt match serenas power , serve, the level of her serve returns, or her mobility.
there was just no match with her , not even the off again on again Venus.
it took Justine Henin to learn to beat her forehand hard around 2003 onwards and have a mix of shots in her game, to bring herself to a match
Naomi Osaka today, has a brilliant serve, but still readable.... nevertheless, her serve is the least readable for Serena, which has made her difficult to beat.

but Serena with her level and longevity, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind , she is the greatest of all time.
no Navratilova, no graf, no seles, no Justine . Naomi's game will get her a few good slams but no chance to be at the level of Graf or Serena on slam numbers.
If Henin would have played post 2010 Serena it wouldn’t have been easy… Serena got even better… 2012-2015 Serena would figure out Osaka as her mental game was much much stronger than now
"Justine had serenas number for a good many years" ---- ummm i dont know what reality you live in but it was only 1 year in 3 of the slams and serena was unfocused and as big as lizzo that year anyway. in 2008 she beat Justine pretty handily in Miami and then again at the 2010 Australian . the head to head is 8-6 in favor of Serena, Serena has a similar head to head against Elena Dementieva. Justine challenged Serena but it's flat out wrong to say Justine "had Serena's number"

Serena's body is crazy sculptured. Wow! She looks incredible! Her body here is what women all over the world are paying and dying for (2024). EVERYONE was talking about her body and her outfit. It was even the lead story on the national news. I remember watching an interview where she stated that EVERYTHING changed for her overnight after she wore this bodysuit.

Listening in 2022 to the commentators, you sense the intimidation (fear?) and lack of empathy for the young Superstar in the making just because of being black, beautiful, and a transcendent athlete. A female athlete far beyond any on the women’s tour to that point and maybe ever.
Whether you call it implicit bias, racism, or a desire to see The Grand Old Lady (Lindsay) win one more after her knee surgery and nearing retirement - whatever it is, it was sad and detrimental to tennis and black women and girls all over 🇺🇸.
Could they not see that before them was something magically great? Maybe a player that would never come again in the history of the game? Sadly, no.
Thank You Serena for showing such grit, grace, magic, and vulnerable wisdom over all the years on the global stage. It goes way beyond tennis. Now for the second act as a social change agent globally. How about some programs and efforts for African and Caribbean girls education and health?
