This is one of my favorite matches. Venus was stunningly aggressive in this match. I love how she used to jump into swinging volleys like this. And I thoroughly enjoyed this broadcast with these two respectful commentators. It's unfortunately unusual to hear a male commentator be so positive regarding the Sisters and their father during their younger years.

      Classic power v.s. finesse contrast.
Hingis is one of the very few female tennis players that I'd smash. Straight take it from the back. The are basically 2 trains of thoughts on this; 1) Just look at it, her back side is by far her best wing. Her haunches are just pillars of strength. And a PERFECT @$$, not too big, just right.. 2) It keeps that face outta site. And far away from mine as possible. It s not the worst, I just don't want to look at that pie plate the whole time. I'm mean, I'll let her look back at it every once Ina while...
It's masterful piece work. I'm impressed..

It breaks my heart that she spent so many years undiagnosed and fighting through her chronic Illness just not knowing why she had so many days where her body was in severe pain and sapped of energy. I remember commentators for several years in the mid/late 2000s opined that Venus lacked focus and determination. Not knowing her body was basically in self destruct mode every time her disorder flared up.

This is probably the match that eventually made Venus. Classic match with all sorts of variety and all-rounded play, which exceeds the 2005 final of neat baseline play. Hingis, instead of Davenport or even Serena, was the one that force out the extreme version of Venus.

the match that made venus and believe in her strokes and net game. Too many QF and SF losses up until that point. AO QF 98/99 vs Davenport. FO 00 vs Sanchez Vicario W QF 98/99 vs Novotna & Graf respectively. US SF 98/99 vs Davenport/Hingis respectively. In all those matches she was a not a big match player having melt downs against Novotna at wimbly and Davenport at AO. The match that stung the most was against Hingis in the US Open, the serve went, cramps came and belief had faded. Interestingly Venus went into Wimbledon wanting the title more than anyone else and even bought her evening ball dress for the champions ball before the championships

"wanting the title more than anyone else" those feelings were not unique and were shared by her rivals, no doubt about it. They were all here with the same expectations of glory. " and even bought her evening ball dress for the champions ball before the championships". Most certainly other challengers who felt they had a chance also brought along their own ball gown. They were not going to wait until the last day to find a dress. They're all a bit superstitious, and little symbols and gestures do count. All the top competitors had in common the same feelings and the same behavior. Nothing very special about Venus in this respect. What made her unique here was not psychology, but brilliance on the court.

Watching Venus used to be so painful. She would come up with some of the most amazing shots in tennis but follow that with strings of unnecessary errors.

I remember seeing this match. I felt Martina was very passive n Venus was super aggressive which is better suited in grass court. Also I noticed Martina had no confidence it’s like she already decided she will not put effort n it showed during the match . She didn’t used any of her net skills n drop shots which a year ago Steffi Graf used effectively on key points against Venus. Venus played outstanding match n after this match she was the force to reckon

Mucho poder el de Venus, Martina simplemente no llega, el segundo servicio básicamente lo espera a la mitad de la cancha, increíble.

At 1:28 Hingis takes her sweet time putting on her hat and getting up to the baseline to serve at the start of the third set. At 1:55, Venus is given a time violation warning. Interesting.

I can’t believe that this Venus won less titles than Serena. Maybe she’s less determined than the younger sister, but in order to have a glorious career she had to complete the career gran slam. It’s the least for his talent

Sjogren's Syndrome robbed Venus of her glory. She would have been as great as Serena if not more. Serena certainly wouldn't have as many slams as she does now. And definitely not more Wimbledons.

Venus wasn't really serious when she was really good. she should have taken the 01 aus open and even at a stretch the 02 aus open (she had tendinitis) then she lost 1st round RG to Schett in 01. Then 02 RG she could have won if she really wanted to as serena was just warming up. but by wimbledon '02 serena was just too good. and then injury set in and she really was not the same, just patches where she won Wimbledon again. her time for winning multiple slams was between wimbledon 00 to wimbledon 02

Well, he said that because he saw it from a British perspective, where such astonishing developments don't usually happen, where a tendency for skepticism if not pessimism is the default position. From an American commentator, this line would not have come out. On the contrary, he would have added, ONLY IN AMERICA. That is the expression of unbounded American optimism against British conservatism or skepticism, and the lack of confident hope in the future that is still the general mood of Britain, and also a lack of means to educate promising juniors. Britain has no Florida or Southern California, nothing comparable to the Bollettieri Tennis Academy for instance. The two opposite views are anchored in two opposite cultural inclinations and historical, and financial limitations.

Should have been 6-3 6-4 if she made less unforced errors. Hingis could not keep up with them when the Williams were on and not making too many unforced errors even with all her guile and quick hands
