Oh boy! Can't forget that year...all great players, great matches and it was Serena's first slam victory....
How talented those players were at that time and they had very distinctive playing style unlike today's tennis where everyone hits very hard without any particular reason....this tennis is just a garbage...I don't watch today's big hitter's tennis....no fun in tennis anymore....especially after the retirement of King Roger and Queen Serena.....
Though I appreciate Iga, Osaka, Bianca, Rybakina but today's tennis has no joy....
Plz bring me back the time of 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 when we had a great bunch of immensely talend players....
Hingis, Davenport, Venus, Serena, Capriati, Monica Seles, Kim Clijsters, Henin, Arantxa, Conchita, Mary Pierce, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Dementieva, Kuznetsova and many many more....how much I miss those days and that intense rivalry....almost all of them were inducted in 'Tennis Hall of Fame' and they deserved it for a great reason....
I would rather watch Serena vs Davenport US Open rather Iga vs Sabalenka French Open Final.....

Lindsay and Hingis had an agreement for Hingis to beat Venus and Davenport to beat Serena so that Hingis and Davenport could compete in the Final and keep the Williams sisters out. Hingis beat Venus but Davenport couldn't beat Serena. Serena and Hingis competed and Serena ended up winning. That was her first Grand Slam win.

The fact that Lindsay was so competitive with all the top players she played including the Williams sisters given her lack of foot speed and agility really goes to show how her ground strokes are legendary and arguably unmatched by any other player (stroke for stroke) in tennis history. Just listening to how the ball leaves her racquet is so pleasing to the ear.

I'm a big Davenport admirer, but much like Hingis benefitted from an injured Graf to win her slams, I think Davenport benefitted from the next generation of talents (Serena, Venus, Henin) not being quite mature enough to handle the big stages in the late 90s. Once they took full flight, Davenport didn't have much of a chance. She's was super talented and consistent though, and I'm glad she won her three slams.
