    I can't believe you dropped it. Great demonstration though. Great channel. PANHEADS FOREVER.

      Hahaha! That head needed to have the spigot replaced anyways, so more for dramatic effect ;) thanks for watching!

    To all the people commenting it can be fixed. Anything can be fixed with enough skill or money. Billy Lane showed us that with his knucklehead repair. Thom was only saying buyer beware

    • @theThomandEricshow
      @theThomandEricshow  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Exactly. Listen, I can fix every single one of these heads and I do often times fix them for myself, but people need to understand that fixing most of these heads will put you 3-4 times the value of the head when done, so in the end, you probably don’t want to own these turds 😂

      @theThomandEricshow agreed. I just sold a beautiful set of 64 oem heads. Super clean no cracks or heli coils, but the rear head dropped a vlave seat and both valves kissed. It can be fixed but with the horrible aluminum HD used back then, why risk it

    Keenan Tatro can fix all of those heads regardless of how bad they are

    • @blockplanestudio
      @blockplanestudio หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Keenan is the man! Appreciate the comment but nobody is saying these heads can’t be fixed, but spending the money to fix some of these more significant cracks and damage will put you 3-4 times the value of a good head. We are trying to inform people not to spend good money on heads that will cost hundreds if not thousands to fix in welding and machine costs. More importantly, not seeing these things and having the seats cut and setup by engine guys that aren’t familiar with Harley and thus wasting your money on a junk head.

    I really appreciate the extensive amount of info and the black magic marker highlighting showing everything we should be looking out for. I think you are doing a great service to the pan community by teaching us all of the ways we can be taken advantage of. This is like a public service announcement and I hope that you keep doing these and eventually we will be able to out the criminals who sell us shit and stop it. Excellent close ups and info. thanks so much. Maybe a laser pointer or small flashlight into the ports would help show us internals too. Well done!

    In my experience you should NEVER unscrew the intake insert. You should carefully cut a small section out of it with a hacksaw blade and collapse it to avoid damaging the treads. When the hole is drilled for the rivet, it adds a burr to the hole and that burr will tear out the treads as you unscrew it. Throw that tool you made in the bin.

    • @blockplanestudio
      @blockplanestudio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s a great tip! Thanks for sharing! It’s not a tool, it’s just a plate welded to a spigot with a nut to extract. It’s already in the bin with each head 😜

    Thom, what valve seats do you prefer when you have to replace them?
    This is all great info and I look forward to more!

    • @theThomandEricshow
      @theThomandEricshow  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I use the kibblewhite hardened seat when I replace most of my seats. I also have used the VTwin seats without issue. It’s always about interference fit when it comes to a successful seat replacement and with Panhead’s you need to be incredibly mindful of seat depth. Too deep and you will get thin and crack out in the port. Definitely want to use a skilled machine shop that has some experience with HD stuff.

    I took my 48 pan heads to Zippers in elkeidge md about 1988 or so. The guy just about said he didnt wanna fool around with my junk . I got butt hurt and swore id never deal with them. He told me what id have in my junk would buybrand new STD heads. After a i came to my senses i bought the std's. Put the old heads on a shelf for emergencies. Best decision he made for me.

    • @theThomandEricshow
      @theThomandEricshow  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      STD heads are great, but they alao have there issues. I will be doing a video on what the problems with those aftermarket heads are and how to remedy the issue. It was a bummer when STD shut down, so hang onto those heads! They are collectors items now 😎

    How much $ do they charge for these bushwacked heads? This reminds me why they don`t give $ for cores on airplane cylinders many times.

    • @theThomandEricshow
      @theThomandEricshow  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      People try to get a fortune for them, but to me, they aren’t worth 20$. Typically at a swap or online you will find them for 100-500 a piece. Most people selling have no idea how bad they are so it’s pointless to try to inform them.

    • @Hoodamax

      V-twin actually has decent repops that are true to original. They get a bad rap because so many of their parts are Taiwan origin, but without them, there's often no alternative. The heads though are decent enough to be preferable for actually riding. S&S heads are ridiculously expensive and have shovelhead style ports obvious from a mile away, and even though they have offered a more accurate version I don't know if they're currently available. If so, see your banker for financing options 😅 good luck.

    • @theThomandEricshow
      @theThomandEricshow  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      VTwin heads are the only option left we have. STD shut down about 3 years ago, but they had the same issue as VTwin. I will be doing a video discussing those issues coming up, so keep watching! 🙏🏻❤️
