  • He was the biggest star on TV when this interview was shot in our Cape Girardeau studio. I'm guessing the year to be 1960. Take it away, Don...

There was never one single dud episode. What an amazing TV show. Not many can compare!

quality never gets old. the only reason we die hard fans don't get tired of it, is that it's too good. the ensemble cast always seemed like a family. and now, w/ re-mastering, and high D, and so forth, the shows look perhaps better than when they first aired. I would have to say tho, that Arness(the chief reason for it's longevity) took a while to get his acting sea legs under him. he was young, and expected to lead a hit show every week. but after about 3 years, he nailed the character down so well, it stayed nailed for good. another example of it's high qualiity, when they lost Doc (Stone)due to hospitalization for a while, Pat Hingle, w/ help from the writers, who continued on w/ e few very good episodes ,made the show just as watchable w/ out ol' Doc, who thankfully returned .'Elijah' is among their best episodes. because of that, I consider Hingle to be a regular cast member, in an honorary sense.in fact, character actors ,despite the same ones used over and over, are always fresh and interesting. Victor French as 'Trafton', is only one example. drinking booze from a gold, Catholic church cup, stolen. one of the best actors I ever saw.

@@lovebaja Sadly,Majority of today's TV shows are rubbish! I don't watch them. I WATCH Gunsmoke, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, Leave it to beaver, Brady Bunch, and others. Today's shows do not compare with them❤

and tho the last one ironically, was sort of a a lame comedy, nobody working on it had any idea it was getting the axe. had they knew , it may have been saved again, like it was in the mid-60's. it has that in common w/ another CBS legend, M*A*S*H, which was saved by William Paley's wife, over some apparent pillow talk, because she loved the show. and apparently, audiences checking out Summer re-runs of it by that time also became fond of it. I know I did.

I cannot imagine how it would be at 6'7' to most always be looking down to the people you talk with.

He was originally even more good-looking, he had wonderful blonde hair. He was of Norwegian and German descent and his real name was not "Arness" but Aurness, and before that Aursness. Hollywood forced him to change his name and color his hair dark, for a certain calculated appeal to viewer demographics. Peter "Graves" (also a Hollywood pseudonym) from "Airplane" fame is his brother.

He mentions 150 episodes have been made ... so this was probably between seasons 4 & 5, in 1959. (Season 4 actually ended with episode #156, the announcer probably just rounds the number out to 150)
