The annual extensions for a steady customer are always cheaper, most companies go down to around 12.500 baht for those, so the 2000 baht expenses will in most cases be cut in half the following years. Pretty good info. For me, the insurance issue might be insurmountable. Travel insurance is high enough, even with no coverage for pre-existing conditions. Hua Hin is one level down from the top. Next level is where I go, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chiang Rai, Petchaburi. Even less expensive are those small villages in Essan where many westerners have settled with their local wives.
Hey. Doc, I'm 55, been to Thailand a lot, had Thai girlfriend, almost 2year relationship, dream is to live in Thailand, if $1200 budget was realistic I'd be there. My basic budget was $2000 and just relaxed "" living my best life" $2500. Going to put in 2 more years of work and savings then going to have the "Best Life" 😉
Would you say that if you did not have a girlfriend it would be cheaper?? Or would you agree with me like I said at the very end of the video that if you're going to have a girlfriend you're going to have to double your budget???? I actually state that a couple of different times throughout the video..... I will be doing a follow-up to this one just to cover some of the comments hopefully you'll catch that video brother... This video is right up my alley. at 60 1/2 yo now looking at 2 or 3 years pulling the plug and giving living there a go. At least 8 or nine months a year. Maybe work a few months in the north of the US where im from in some summer months. Now about Jack's blood sugar. Everyone in my family older than me is diabetic type 2 and graduate to type 1. All diagnosed 10 or more years than me present age. I consume absolutely no raw sugars and wheat products rarely and no potato either. No loose carbohydrates. However i do take supplements for the last 20 + years. A1C is 5.4. being like the Doc, i drink. Mostly light beer or unsweetened booze. Food is mostly raw vegetables and meat. Only high fiber fruits. I believe diabetes is defeatable. And thus far im proof, so far. My next research - ercon mission to the kingdom is likely not until March. Uah Hin is definitely on the list to explore
That's awesome that you're already into that cycle where you've cut out all of the crap in your diet congratulations... Trust me you want to get here sooner rather than later because it truly is Paradise in positively perfect Thailand...
On the retirement visa requirement, am I understanding what you said about Thai immigration accepting an income of $1900 usd per month (no 800,000 thb bank deposit required)? Does the $1900 have to be transferred into Thailand monthly or would my US based bank statements showing this monthly threshold or better satisfy the requirement?
As I understand it as long as you can show that you have a $1,900 a month income that is the requirement I do not believe that it has to be deposited into a local bank however I can tell you this much if you had the Visa you would be much better off having a local bank account it's going to save you a lot of money... Cheers mate 🍻
I’m coming over at the end of October for 6 months from the Great White North. If you want anything from Shoppers Drug Mart or Costco … let me know and I’ll send it Kerry Express to wherever you might be. Cheers !
A bit over $1200 budget ? Not sure if this beats Siem Reap (?) or perhaps Tagaytay ? --- Both will likely cost $25/mo. visa fees. Rents can be a bit cheaper too ? 50 cent beer in SR. --- Not much of a drinker though. --- Some US expats are quite content in SR with $800 -- $1000/mo. budgets ! + Lipa City Philippines as well. > Depends on what you want I suppose ?
I 100% agree I have been up to Siem Reap many times I absolutely love it there the food is unbelievably cheap and delicious especially the Mexican food.... And yeah that 50 cent beer..... Oh my I love that 50 cent beer..... There's all kinds of incredibly affordable places to live if you are on a tight budget..... Cheers mate 🍻
It is clear you couldn’t have the same quality of life in the West on $1200 a month; my pension is about $6000 a months and I couldn’t live on it without having investment income in addition. However the healthcare for an older person is an issue since it is likely that your friend Jack will eventually need more than just occasional bloodwork and consultations and dental work. The last years of life are often spent in and out of hospital; having stents put in, chemotherapy etc. Those things are covered in the West by government programs such as Medicare, NHS etc. I guess once that happens Jack could return to his country of origin unless he has put aside large stash of money for such emergencies. Peace brother
Hey Michael there's no question that Healthcare is a major concern for a lot of people however I am learning the more guys that I talk to it's unbelievable how many just don't have any health insurance at all.... Jack does not have a bunch of money salted away in case of any emergencies or anything like that he just simply doesn't have it..... So it is what it is Thanks for watching and commenting Cheers mate 🍻
I wen to Hua Hin for the first time last year. There was a huge amount of older retired guys at the mall with their Thai wives. Never saw anything like that in Chiang Mai. It was also a major weekend beach location for Bangkok so it gets crazy on the weekends. Not really that laid back or cheap compared to up north. Hotels were all around 2000 baht for a room that would be 1000 in Chiang Mai.
No you definitely wouldn't see that up in Chiang Mai because it's a completely different atmosphere and Vibe up there... I think you will admit that the older guys that you saw with their Thai wives had wives who were at least somewhat close to their age..... As for the hotels being 2,000 baht on the weekend sorry brother I can't agree with you on that..... I didn't pay more than 600 a night for any of the places that I stayed in.... All which were very nice with the exception of the one place that was recommended to me by a friend... Lol Thanks Jack But you are definitely right that Chiang Mai has a more laid-back vibe to it however Chiang Mai is more laid back than any city in the world.....
@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean damn all my rooms were 1,700+ and not great. I got one cheap one and it was so loud I had to give up and change to another fancier hotel. Just my bad planning maybe.
Do you think Hua Hin is suitable for a 30 something year old looking to focus on his remote work for a few years and save a lot in the process? Or should I consider closer to the city (I will not stay in Bangkok as it would drive me mad..) or somewhere like Phuket? Just concerned it's only retirees in Hua Hin lol.

I want to spend at least half the year in Thailand after I retire next year. I am an obese diabetic with high blood pressure. I would be very interested in seeing a video all about eating healthy enough to go off your meds. I hear a lot of the street food has sugar added
Hey Matthew I would love to be able to do a video about that but I don't know enough about it I'm afraid I might give you the wrong advice and actually do damage to you.... My suggestion would be to consult a nutritionist or a dietitian..... Honestly mate I wouldn't be looking to a talking head on TH-cam with something so important is that.....
What Jack has done Matthew is he has cut out all of the alcohol from his diet... Not that he was a big drinker in the first place. He is also stop drinking any type of soda, diet or otherwise even Coke Zero... If he is in a situation where he desperately needs a soda he will have a Coke Zero but that is it.... He does ask the street food vendors not to add any sugar or anything like that to his smoothies or his local Thai dishes.... And obviously condiments and stuff like this he is watching extremely carefully.... I wish I could give you more info but again made I'm not the best person to ask.....
Not sure where these prices are from...went to Bangkok hospital to refill a prescription. Made me see doc, jump through hoops and it ended with a 6300 baht bill. Cheap comparatively but not 1200....?
Hey brother I can tell you this much myself personally I've had blood work done down in Phuket and it cost me about 1,100. babt.... Just the same as the dental work I'm telling you my friend I've witnessed it first hand myself and that's how much it is sadly enough a lot of time foreigners get overcharged but you can always go someplace else and see what they're willing to charge you.....
Jack is a 69-year-old soon-to-be 70-year-old friend of mine who has been living in Thailand for a couple of years... Came over on a limited budget due to life I guess is the best way to put it.... And he is having the greatest time he enjoys every single day.... Just living life....
I don't know what visa Jack has, but I thought one of the stipulations of a retirement visa was that you had to have a certain level of health insurance?

@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean depends upon what you want and are looking for. And the types of activities you want to do. I will be honest, hua hin is nice don’t get wrong - you can pretty much live anywhere in Thailand and enjoy your time. When I first came to hua hin I was La little disappointed - Mainly because hua hin is put in a pedestal of the best place to stay. If you like the ocean and what an ocean life - hua hin beach is high tide most of the year. It’s mainly a wind surfer beach. Plus the beach is hidden from the condos. So way different than Phuket. This could a a deal breaker for you. With the condos - especially if you sign. A year lease are leaking. Meaning they are treated like hotels. People stay for a couple nights or a couple of weeks - can be irritating because the amenities get over occupied and parking in condos can be difficult. In my experience, all the condos in hua hin are leaking especially the newer condos. Traffic: I lived in Phuket for one year - and hua hin traffic is way more dangerous. Locals running through stop lights and stop signs. If you’re in the middle of a cross walk - they won’t stop. I never experienced this in Phuket. The positive side of traffic - police checkpoints are pretty much non existent… Weather is nice - rains the least in hua hin. It’s definitely worth to check out - if it’s not for you - then you’re learning more about what you want for yourself.
Hey Keith yes you definitely can if you're looking for a short time romp.... But this girl comes over she has dinner with you she goes out with you she spends the night she says goodbye to you in the morning.... 2k Nothing wrong with that

I am going to buy a second hand bike for around 25k baht. Join a gym and eat good Thai food and just chill.

I mean honestly what more could you possibly ask for and I love the idea of you buying a used bike makes no sense to lose the depreciation yourself especially when you see the deals that you can get on bikes here......
Only trouble is Cory that's for a base model 125cc.
Not only that I've done a couple of videos talking about why it makes sense to buy used bikes here because of the massive depreciation....
Let someone else lose the money especially if you're talented like this guy obviously is and can do your own maintenance and repairs

Hey John yeah the insurance is an issue for a lot of guys.
Take care mate
I will be doing a follow-up to this one just to cover some of the comments hopefully you'll catch that video brother...

great video Mark. IMO 65 years old plus is the ideal age to retire in Hua Hin.
Hey Paul
I would agree with you on that mate

So it is what it is

Lol
Thanks Jack
But you are definitely right that Chiang Mai has a more laid-back vibe to it however Chiang Mai is more laid back than any city in the world.....

@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean I understand that TH-cam isn’t real life but it might be inspiring to see how Jack handles his nutrition

@@whyhellotherewithdrmarksabean okay let me know, I live in Hua Hin
Awesome
How do you like it?
The positive side of traffic - police checkpoints are pretty much non existent…
Weather is nice - rains the least in hua hin.
It’s definitely worth to check out - if it’s not for you - then you’re learning more about what you want for yourself.
Definitely not 2k for companionship in Hua Hin. Can get forhalf that easily
Hey Keith yes you definitely can if you're looking for a short time romp....
But this girl comes over she has dinner with you she goes out with you she spends the night she says goodbye to you in the morning....
