By far, this is the BEST video and explanation on mastering the takeaway. It took me from a double-digit golfer to single-digits and becoming one of the longest hitters in my golfing group. I'm truly enjoying my golf game right now and looking forward to continuing to learn from you and Adam's video lessons. Keep up the GREAT work, it truly has transformed my game and I'm sure it has done the same for others as well. Can't say enough about how GREAT the videos you guys put out, easy to understand and even easier to practice. Thank you to you both.
Excellent. I have been struggling with inside takeaway for years. When I can keep club head outside my hands on takeaway, I strike the ball much better. Using the two alignment sticks and keeping club head along stick longer and moving hands straight back with out wrist manipulation really helps . Thanks
I used to take the club away in the inside by turning the hip early and I hooked or pulled most of my shots, I was afraid to follow your takeaway lesson not to push or slice the ball. After I tried it for a couple of rounds I can not hit my irons any better, perfectly straight, even the longer irons which were my main weakness, thank YOU. The only issue I have now is I am fading the driver instead of drawing it, same with 3W, not the 5W or 7W though, any advice to get the driver and 3W straighter like my irons? Thanks!
I’ve watched thousands of golf videos and this is one of if not the best all around golf tip I have seen. If you get the takeaway right everything else seems to fix itself.
Okay--- it finally clicked, THANK GOD !!!!! thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I have been struggling with this for some time now. I started playing golf from whe I was in my early teens about 5 years ago and this one video was just another one of your many videos I have watched and tried to implement. Now ---- I can honestly say I can not wait to get back out on the course next weekend. Yesterday was a good round --- BUT --- now with this --- this is literally just the few swing thoughts to maintain during the round from this point forward. I even implemented the and path during putting --- Holy cow what a difference.
Excellent teaching video. If every beginner golfer would watch this video and learn this first, they would save themselves years of having to unlearn bad habits. I've seen so many golfers that had bad swings because they started the takeaway wrong, and the rest of their swing was making compensations for a bad takeaway. Really good video, thanks.

Wow That was so so informative and the demonstration of the Pit falls of getting the takeaway wrong will cause You All sorts of Problems In your Golf Stroke...Thanks for taking the time to explain how crucial This Drill Is.
First time watching you absolutely fantastic golf instruction you make it so simple this video is going to be my number one go to when I'm working on my back swing, sweet as a nut
I like this thought of a "hand path" and "club path!" Now, is there a push back with the right shoulder and arm in taking these paths? I also like your recommendation of always "staying connected!" Well Done Sir!
Can we see a downswing hand plus club path ?? Excellent video. And at 6.55 you said, pressure into the grip… what you mean by pressure ? You mean pushing down on the grip ?
Hold or tape an alignment stick to the butt end of a golf club and swing with the stick against your lead thigh during the takeaway and lifting of the arms. Incredible drill to get the correct hand path and feel. This will likely feel horrible for most people but perfect on video. With this drill you can’t do it wrong. Do this and your ball striking will go to the next level.
Mike, great teaching and understanding video. Quick question, I think at times I start to lift my hands slightly on the takeaway. So shoulder turn is limited. Am I correct in saying you want the players hands to stay on the same line going back until P 3 ? Then they will begin to turn up as shoulders turn more.
this is a great and thorough lesson, easy to understand, i'm definetly guilty of sucking my arms, hands and club inside like you have shown. gonna work on it, thnx for the help..
Golf Pitt. I have a horrible over the top move. I watched this video and the one with the gate drill. First off your videos are easy to understand. Secondary should I work on the take away drill before I start on the over the top drills? Or can I incorporate them together? Thanks for the content.
I believe this is the best instruction I have read on line. Simple without over talking. I believe I swing in that manner; however, I sweep the ball and do not feel I am not hitting the back of the ballon the downswing. I occasionally take a small divot but not consistently. Should my angle of attack be more angled down to get to the back of the ball? Hope you can help. I do believe I have found a new on line swing coach. Thank you very much.
thank you so much for the kind words! i got you whatever you need! check out this video and let me know if it helps! m.th-cam.com/video/mWmDRX_HCnE/w-d-xo.html
It is a fantastic video; a lightbulb went off with the two alignment rods. Not to make the drill a “triple-lindy,” but can you combine it with a towel under the arm connection drill?
One thing I've always been stuck on, you get the set position, turn to the top, and then turn back through. But do you release the set position? or do you hold that angle you've created through and release it beyond the ball?
that is a great question and will be covered in detail in an upcoming video on the release! At the end of the day we don’t feel like we’re trying to hold the angle through the golf ball. the force of the rotation of the swing would mean that you were fighting the natural energy of the club. that said a lot of people who have been casting may need to feel more of their hands and handle accelerating past the golf ball through impact which in the near term may feel like your not releasing the set position at first…. We want to get all of the energy we can out of that set position we create into and through the ball.
I have been working on this premise for several years and I think the biggest issue I have is that the right arm stays on top of the left instead of bending up. It causes me to not be as deep on my backswing and be across the line the longer the club.
take some back swings with your right hand open, so it can’t impart any influence on the club… this is going to give your lead arm a good workout and should help. And if that doesn’t work, just try doing your best jon rahm imitation!! 😂. I say this jokingly but not really. We have many many very good players who use visuals as feels, a “short jon rahm” is one very effective one!
I am confused on when you hinge the wrists. At what point do you hinge and turn? I have seen some people say that once the hands reach the right leg but the club is not parallel to the target if you hinge at the right leg.
Mike, love the simplicity, but we all know who struggle in getting this correct its not simple. I have always been a little confused on when the hips start to rotate in the takeaway. Are they quiet for the first foot. Do they turn with the shoulders and club going back etc etc. thanks.
Can you just set the club by pushing down the left heel pad with slight shoulder movement down the toe line and have it hover over the ball at slight 45 degree angle then simply then simply turn your shoulders to the top and hit balls ?
Hi Mike, this is a great explanation of the takeaway, especially noting the club path vs. the hand path. I had a tendency to push my hands away from my body which created a disconnected swing with inconsistent results. Awesome drills, Thank you!
I made the mistake of stretching the club head out down the line so long the hands followed it... Then I began to believe in it as I thought that was "built in" arm lift and necessary. I didn't think about low camera angles of the pros on tv.
It’s because the club is longer. The ball is further away from you and the line angel is different. I bet the rhythm of the backswing gets a little quicker when you have a longer club en hence the mechanics breakdown.. try really slowing it down in the takeaway
I never understand this, what about the once piece drill they put the butt of club in stomach and turns all together if it all turns together wouldn’t hands and club head go in a semi circle how long does the hands and club stay on line? When I do it I feel like I’m dragging the head and it stays closed.. I think your rt but I’m not quite there. Thx
Good video. A lot of attention is put on don't turn your hips, shoulders, etc. This drill pretty much does that and gets you turning at the right time with little effort. As in a more natural golf swing. I was paying way to much attention to other things than hand path.
Have watched way too many you tube videos on the golf swing. Your videos along with Adams are simple the best!! Great explanation and drill on the takeaway. Everything else is garbage

The connected lead side ( NO ARM SWINGING) How do you get the body starts & continues the swing to the "end" of the takeway. Now what ??? How do yo get the lead arm/ club unit up to th shoulder line with-out "lifting" the arms off the body. BTW, I wish you & Porzack had come along 10 yrs ago. I'm 73, and I've wasted a lot of time learning bad technique.
check your hand path and make sure it’s not moving out while you do this. Also simply put if the club is too far outside at that point you can simply try to feel slightly more inside and it’ll actually be right on plane.
It’s difficult for most people! Try this feel. Feel like you are pushing a beach ball beneath the water with your lead hand. This downward motion on the butt of the club will help set the club

What about the driver?
No difference in my opinion
hand path and club path remain the same, the hinge will happen a little wider and softer. I will get some content up for you guys soon!
When I try this with the pinky squeeze my club gets too far outside my hands. Miles off the “p2” position, not sure what I’m missing
check your hand path and make sure it’s not moving out while you do this. Also simply put if the club is too far outside at that point you can simply try to feel slightly more inside and it’ll actually be right on plane.
This is the Mac O’Grady takeaway?
Have such a hard time setting the club. I set to late and club gets across the line and my hands too close to face :(
It’s difficult for most people! Try this feel.
Feel like you are pushing a beach ball beneath the water with your lead hand. This downward motion on the butt of the club will help set the club
Don’t get the club head working its way up the shaft…not sure what you mean?
Set club early up through PW then a bit later as clubs get longer 🤓
But once they hands get past the shoelaces, then what… That’s the tricky part for me?
