- Allot of CB enthusiast consider the President Grant one the best CB radios of all times. Its not in the same league as a CPI but it was incredible SSB radio. Its uses the same main board as the Cobra 139 XLR and 1st Gen President Washington base. The D858 PLL is a very hackable and was banned by the FCC. My Teddy R runs a 858 and had the channel expansion mod. I need to replace the capacitors on this radio. Even the little testing I've done is giving good results. The SSB receive is better then my other modern radios. They didn't cut corners on the radios made in Japan. The later Taiwan models feel lighter and cheaper then the 1st gen.

I get a kick out of someone getting radios that I grew up with.
I cannot count the times I modified the 858PLL, the O2A PLL, 8719PLL.
We used to use VFO's on some of our radios, and put crystals on a switch, all kinds
of things to get the lower and upper freqs.
I personally have some Midland 77-882, 2 Malaysian 148 GTL's still new in the box.
I'm not selling them. I opened 1 of the Midlands a while back, done my conversion on the O2A, and works well. Made in 1976. The box is the Convoy theme look to it, with C.W. McCall on the front.
Great receiving radios, the transmit is nothing compared to todays radios, or even in back in the 80's, but I still use them.

Radio are not my specialty either. The SSB radios are fun. It allows you to talk to people are the world for cheap. More of a emergency type thing for me.
What's the big base station radio you were referring to ?

70s? Wire ties were invented in 1958, sure, but I've never seen 70s Japan consumer electronics with them. And those look pretty modern, 70s ones usually had the metal tooth. That trnasformer looks like maybe a choke that the power originally went through?
Cool, thanks. I guess I've never seen the black zip ties are older equipment. I usually see clear. I'm trying to find a schematic for this radio to see how transformer/choke is connected. Choke makes sense. I only see two connections. I wonder why it was disconnected. I have a capacitor kit on the way.
