  • I have a mid grade Air compressor from Home Depot, that suddenly stopped working right in the middle of a job.
    It turns out this unit is sold under many names and model numbers and it has a weak spot. the reed valve setup is cheap and fails with time and use. Lucky for all of us the parts are available online and are cheap and easy to replace! Just look for the HL4000 Kit.

    You can safely discharge the capacitor by crossing a screwdriver shank across the terminals while holding the driver by its insulating handle. Other folks may not know that. You can also use an insulated jumper with insulated alligator tips each end. Cross the terminals for about 30 seconds.

      Actually you may get one hell of a spark doing this and damage your screwdriver.
      Best way to discharge a capacitor is with a big resistor - which will drain it slowly and much more safely.

      Most capicitors will drain off in a couple of minutes. Big HVAC units use super high voltage and they will drain off too in just a couple of minutes.
      A good investement would be to purchase a 1/4 inch drive socket set. Most everybody has 3/8 drive and maybe adapters to up to 1/2 inch. You'll be amazed how easy it is to work with 1/4 drive on stuff like this.

    Discharging the capacitor is simple.. make sure the mains power is unplugged, using an insulated screwdriver 🪛 just short out the 2 terminals on the capacitor. Make sure you are insulated from the metal bar when you do it.

    I have the same Husky Compressor. 10+ yrs old. Intermittently stopped or wouldn't get passed 50psi. Got fed up and got the kit. Followed all the directions. Now, I have to ask you or anyone really. How in the he** did you get the old gasket off? That was probably the most difficult part of the process. Didn't get much info online. Tried plastic putty knife/razor blade, paint remover 3 times, but it was on there. I took off the exhaust and the inlet filter portion, and boiled the aluminum head for a couple of hours, and scraped with the plastic putty knife/razor in the pot. The boiling really helped loosen the gasket material, but it did make the paint peel., but thats mostly covered by the shroud. Let it cool, then took a 150 grit nylon bristle wheel from HB to remove the remaining bits. Cleaned everything, plumber taped the exhaust, reassembled, and now its running like new. Sounds smoother, and held psi like a champ. Thanks!

    Yep, your Right! I went..."Say WHAT?" You knew, you Should've used "Medium ft. Lbs" of torque for the first X pattern bolt tightening sequence, then tightened Fairly Snug... IMO a Bit Chancy, to not use a torque wrench with the proper ft. lb. spec's.
    But hey, it worked! Cheer's!

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm off to save some air compressors. I knew there had to repair parts out there. Many people do trash them or cannibalize them. I have a small HF oil less benchtop hotdog compressor that recently pooped out.
    To bad Yugo didn't stick around. A teacher of mine, way back in the 80's, had a sweet little orange two-door hatchback Yugo. I really like that little car. He maintained that thing in top condition. Too bad there were quite a few problems with some of them.

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Find and fix those compressors! You can turn around and resell them and make some $$ while you save them from the scrap yard. I just finished reading a book on the whole Yugo saga. It appears that they rushed them into the USA in record time once they decided they wanted to sell them here. I'm betting if they had spent a full year instead of 4 months getting the car ready for US buyers, The car would have done well. Sadly once they fixed everything it was to late. The car was hated by most. and no one wanted to be seen in one. Its too bad. I just took mine for her maiden trip and it drives quite nice. VERY VW Rabbit like, but smaller and a little more crude.
