- In this video I remove and repair a failed Honda DRL control relay. The vehicle shown in the video is a 2001 - 2005 Honda Civic. This control relay can be found in all Honda models from the early 1990's to current models. The location of the control unit may be different depending on what year and model. Symptoms of a failing unit may include DRL warning indicator on, buzzing under dash when headlamps are off, and one or both high beam bulbs may not work.

Thanks!! You saved me a couple hundred bucks. I drive a 2002 honda civic coupe. My DRL was acting up 3 days ago. There was a buzzing sound, and the DRL status light kept flickering in my dash. Also, the DRL on the right side didn't work, but the regular light and high beam worked fine. After watching your video, it only took 30 minutes or less to fix it. I had to resolder and retouch 14 spots. After the fix, the buzzing sound was gone, and the DRL worked fine. Anyone driving the same car as me, the DRL module is located above the hood release.
I had to do this 6 years ago. Problem happened again just now. Watched your video both times. Got rid of my DRL light staying constantly on (same problem as in the video). I have a 2004 Honda Civic SiR (the goofy hatchback / EP3). Thanks again
I checked my fuses, relays and wires, and in the end it was the DRL module! No low beams, only the right side high beam worked. Soldered the module, and now it all works again! Thanks for posting this.
My wife's 2004 Pilot had no daytime running lights and only the passenger high beam. Googled it and finally found your video. Followed it, and man... everything works again ! You've saved me some big bucks ! Many thanks from Canada, eh !!! :o)
Bart Nelissen What vehicle do you have? That is the exact symptoms i have in my acura 3.2 tl 2000
LOL I wouldn’t consider this “bug bucks” even if you got a shop to replace the module but it is convenient and nice to be able to do it yourself
Had intermittent DRL light, took 10 minutes to do total fix on 2005 Acura RSX- out/solder/in. great call on pulling board out of housing. Broken solder connections looked identical to video. Thanks very much for upload!!!
Thanks for the tutorial! My DRLs have been out for 4 years because I did not know how to fix them. Fixed them today within 10 minutes after watching your video.
Glad I was able to help! Thanks for watching.
I followed your instructions and it worked! I have a 2005 Honda Element. This saved me $120.00 plus tax for a new DRL module. Thank you for sharing this video!
Ha. The guy I took my 96 accord for inspection tried to charge me 100$ for the module. TRIED! thank you for this video!
I have a 03 Honda civic with DRL problem..Thank you...thank you..thank you for the video..I had it up and running in about 20 min. Your video is SO clear and well done..No BS..Thanks again..
Great video, but one small thing I wanted to mention is that you should always clean away the old solder that has chipped/broken away with a soldering wick or solder sucker before applying the fresh solder for stronger joints. Nonetheless, your video has saved a lot of people a lot of time and money. Thanks for sharing!
This is awesome! I had this problem, and had an appointment with Honda, I'm sure I would have gotten fleeced there. Took out the relay, soldered the connections, now its working like a beauty! You have no idea how much I appreciate this!
Glad I was able to help!
I have the same issue with my 2012 Honda Accord. Passenger hi beam stayed on even with the engine off and my car was under warranty. Took it to Honda and they call me right away with BS words saying it's not under warranty anymore.
Checking in here with failed DRL - 2000 Accord Ex. Reflowed all the components. DRL now works! I will look at your other Honda clips. I'm an expert at soldering and electronics, so the repair was easy, but locating the DRL module was the most difficult part - I looked everywhere and finally gave up until TH-cam came to the rescue.
(Thanks and I've subbed)
Shutout to this amazing human being saved soooooo many people hundreds of dollars Thank you sooo much it well appreciated by many. Make sure to share this around people!
This helped me fix my ongoing issue! If anyone has a buzzing from under the dash when DRL is on, this fixes it! Also fixed my issue of ONE highbeam not working. Thank you very much!
Can you tell me more about your highbeam not working? … I think I have the same problem
@@curtisrideout7152 Ya I just had a buzzing noise under the dash (from the DRL module it turns out) for about a year (it would stop buzzing after the lights were turned on) and finally the one highbeam quit as well. This reflowing the solder did the trick to fix it all!
As a side note I have no DRLs now but that is due to switching to some amazon LED headlights that likely don't get enough volts to light up on DRL mode. Simple fix I just always turn my lights on now.
@@kusler67 thanks for the info, ending up cleaning and soldering the board, and it did the trick! The peace of mind knowing all my lights work perfectly is phenomenal
Almsot a 10 year old video and worked like a dream. Thank you sir!!!
Thank you for your video.
I have had a DRL on (05 CIVIC SE, Canada). I had the DRL on for few months but only right high beam would not work, so I didn't bother looking into it. Today I didn't even have any day light working & right high beam still not working. I didn't wanted to get picked on by the police so.. I finally Google'd about DRL.
Instead of taking it to my mechanic, reading forums and your video showed that it seems to be easy work, even for someone who doesn't know a thing about a car like myself. Thanks to my hobby in electric radio control, I do have soldering kit and bit of skill to use them.
On my 05 Civic, I removed two panels (both with turn tab) to remove under the steering but this grey box was to the far left side all by itself in wide open area.
I tried to push the box up and remove it but it was on very hard and due to the position I couldn't put much force to it. So on the spot I just pulled out the circuit board by popping it with a screw driver first.
Now, solder points were small enough that I couldn't really see it with bare eyes and not having a magnifying glass did not help. So I do what I always do.... I take my digital camera to shoot a close-up/macro with flash and view it on my computer. Looked like about 2 had smallish crack? So I soldered those and few others around it. This took about 5 minutes. Go back to the car, plug it back in the car before putting the circuit board back in the grey box. Success! DRL light is off, day light is on now, BOTH high beams are working now.
Thank you!
Glad I was able to help and your DRL issues are resolved!
This worked and only took 10 minutes. On our 2001 Accord I did not have to remove cover. Could see the module and pried it out as shown. Then used magnifying glass to see which solder was cracked. I did approx 6 pieces in the area this guys shows. Saved $198 for part.
My son fixed his in 15 minutes. Thank you to have taken the time to post this video.
Love the sounds of the Assistant in the background.
Worked on my 2004 Element, no more drl light flickering or buzzing sound :) Thanks a million!
THANK YOU. This fixed my DRL light problem thats been on for months.
Thanks for the tutorial, resoldered my circuit board and no more buzzing! Super easy fix and save a wad of cash.
Thank you for the video BackYard! This truly helped resolve my 2001 Acura 1.7EL DRL problem. I tried my best to solder the board yet just couldn't get it to work.
I went to the wreckers and eventually found one in an old Honda VAN.
I also put in a new (used) little grey relay (behind the glove box) and a 10amp fuse.
Ready for the next 250kms
Thanks, this helped me fix the drl relay on my 1999 prelude! Got working running lights and brights now
thank so much for the video if I would of seen this video earlier I would save a lot of money instead of buying a new fuse box and headlight switch and bulb I just bought a new DRL and everything work perfectly
Thank you, I did this and it solved both my DRL buzzing sound and the high-beams not working on one side. Woop!
you have save me a trip to the mafia mechanic shop thank you dude.
This saved my $60 plus the loss of my car for a day Thank you.
Thank you very much for this short and clear video! I fixed my Honda Civic 2004 DRL problem based on it.
Beautiful video , if you hold the soldering iron long enough so that the temperature of relay tab , copper print on circuit board and solder wire reach melting temperature of lead to make a good solder joint . You did a pretty good job at soldering . Thanks .
awesome, i've been reading up on this in forums but it's nice to see a video on it. gonna attempt to do this and my cylinder head cap replacement on my next day off lol. 2 super easy fixes that will save me hundreds!
Good luck with your repairs!
Thank you very much for posting this. Very well explained and I was able to fix my DRL lights and the right high beam. You saved me a lot of money and time. Much appreciated! Best Regards!
Thanks for the short and straight to the point repair video.
Dude, I echo all the compliments. Just did this on a 2003 Pilot and works fine. It was a bugger to get the DRL module out, mind you. But thanks.
Followed your advicce and it corrected the problem. Awesome, youi just saved me a lot of money, thanks !!!
exactly the video i was looking for!!! trying this in my 2003 tomorrow!!!!
thank you, thank you , thank you , saved a few bills , 4 years no day time running lights , ( used my low beam lights during the day ) one high beam did not work ,my first attempt i rushed the soldering job and clicked it back in . I started hearing a buzzing coming from behind the glove box, theres a grey fuse looking box that was buzzing so i pulled it out and the buzzing went away i figured i should replace it. the auto wrecker was not open yet as it was 7 am , so i decided to pull apart the module again to reinspect using a magnified lamp light then i noticed more cracked connections so i re-solder again , click it back in and success!!
Glad it worked! The relay behind the glove box is called the low beam cut relay if you need the look it up..
My driver side DRL/High beam doesn't light intermittently, hopefully this trick will do!
Thank you for this video!
Great video. I've got a DRL light on my dash, and verified that there is no voltage to the right high beam. I'm going to take out the module tonight and see if the solder joints need rework. Thanks!
Fixed my 2002 Acura RSX's DRLs, thanks!
Thanks for the video. If you want better solder joints remember to touch the solder only to the heated terminal/wire, not to the iron (except for tinning), that way you avoid a "cold solder joint". Remember don't think of the iron as a paint brush, but rather a heat source, which causes the (rosin core) solder to flow. Of course contacts should be clean of oxidation/dirt as the rosin will not clean the joint, only facilitate the flow of solder. NEVER use acid core solder. A 25 Watt to 30 Watt iron is about the right size ( a soldering gun can peel off the circuit board copper paths and fry the diodes etc. on the other side). If the iron is hot (enough to melt the solder, test beforehand) it should only take perhaps 4 seconds to solder (a heat sink [alligator clip] will help to protect silicon components which are on the other side one joint at a time, make sure the heat sink doesn't get too hot either).
Awesome. Thanks so much. Saved me a huge headache. Working perfectly now.
Thanks for this. My 2001 civic the DRL were dim and also my instrumentation cluster lights were also dim. I took the DRL panel out and it didn't look bad, but i resoldered 2 points. And noticed my cluster lights were lit up again. The DRL were brighter too.
Did this and it worked for a week. Would love to see a vid that bench tests the relay board
Just a small video of a DRL relay repair on a Honda. I had helpfrom my daughter as you can hear in the back ground!
BackYard Tech - just bought a 2006 Honda Accord for my son. We replaced the old head lights with new ones that had a built in LED. We tied the LED into the daytime running lights and blinker. I also replaced the low and high beam bulbs with a built in load resistor. We also replaced the blinker bulb with an LED, and tied in the load resistor for them as well. When the daytime lights are turned on, the high beams kick on too, but the lighting is reduced. When we turn on the low beams, the high beams sometimes come on( reduced lighting) and sometimes doesn’t. When I use the high beams they used like normal. Why would the high beams come one when it’s not being used? How could I fix that?
BackYard Tech hey dude ! I know it’s an older video but thanks for the tip! My DRL and high beams haven’t been working for like 4 months and I watched this and fixed it in a grand total of 7 minutes tonight’s haha
I'm having issues with only the driver's side drl's not working on my 91. In my case there are two bulbs in the corner lens, both are running lights, one is clear and one is amber. Obviously the amber "runs" and "blinks" when the turn signal is activated. However, only the clear portion is "running." When looking at the bulbs, as the drl's are turned on, the amber signal bulb flashes but again does not run. It does however "blink" when activated. I'm assuming some of the circuitry is to "run" them and some is to "blink" them. In your opinion would faulty circuitry (potentially) cause this issue?
Thanks for the great video
Genius, great idea on just removing the circuit board!
Worked like a charm for my 2001 Civic, thanks so much for uploading this!
this was a huge help - thanks, you took all the mystery out of it. I'm going to be doing this on a n Aucra.
work perfectly on two civic, a 2001 and a 2005, i actually use small wire to make sure the connection were perfect!
Just followed your instruction and it worked. Thanks.
2003 Honda Element, perfect solution, thank you!
Worked mint!! High beams both work now!!
Good job. Any idea where they hide this lil box on a 5th gen prelude? I fear mine is going out and I need to replace it/repair it. 99 honda prelude.
Good video! I would give it two likes. Simple and to the point. My drl is working
Followed your video and fixed the problem. Thanks brother 😎
thank you for your post. I tried your solution and it worked.
Help please! My fuse on hood and under dash both still good no burnt. I tried to solder the burnt part in DRL relay but still getting DRL warning help please!
Most vehicle will be repaired with the DRL relay fix. There are other failure points including low beam cut relay, and wiring issues. It is difficult to diagnose the fault without see the vehicle or doing any testing.
how about if I remove the old solder and put a new one? This is the only one I could think of since it has a couple burnt on it.
Can't hurt to try. Maybe the solder is shorting 2 circuits on the board?
Thank you for posting, this worked great for me!!
What tools are you using? I need to get my fix before it gets bigger.
Followed this and it fixed my problem thx
Omg I am doing this tomorrow on my 03' civic its been driving me bonkers!
Cuando no servía tu módulo DRL te indicaba en el tablero un foco de que estaban encendidos ...y después de que lo reparaste te indico algo en el tablero
Thanks for putting this video together! I have a 2010 Honda Accord and I can't find the DRL module. Do you have any idea where it would be located on my car?
+aalmujah I don't think a 2010 Accord used the same DRL system. This video may not apply. I would make sure both your high beam bulbs are ok.
Well I just fix mine Honda Odyssey 2002 I had no running daylights and no high beams I solder about 6 of those points put it back and BINGO everything is now working I was really happy only one thing I would do and I did differently from this video is removing the Module in one piece it's only one 10mm screw and then you take it apart after I find it must easy to do and less chance of damaging the inside.
Hi I have 2000 Honda Odyssey The driver side light highbeam doesn’t work is that the same issue?
The bulbs are both OK and the DRL light is on.
Ya I have a 98 accord , no DRLs and only driver highbeam , just gonna buy a refurbished relay for 50 off of eBay. Gonna cost the same to buy a soldering set up and gonna have to resolved them again in a few weeks if I do it my self anyways
Thanks very much! It worked perfectly and saved me some cash :)
Thanks SO MUCH for posting!
thank you very much for this amazing video,
i have other problem which is low windshield washer fluid warning light won't turn off even after I've topped up the windshield washer fluid!!!
most likely at defective level sensor at the bottom of the washer fluid tank. .
Another thing for you to check when you have it apart again next time is the Capacitors are the next thing to go as they will dry out and cause resistance...
Thanks man! Ur the best!
What metal are you using to do the sutur
good video , i will fix mine soon
thx - I did and it works great!!
Is the 2005 acura El DRL circuit board location also underneath the dashboard?
Should be the same as shown.
My buzzing is in the glove box area. Can you show me how to get to and remove the relay that's there? I removed the panels you spoke of and don't see the DRL relay. I do see some wires that have been cut though. I think the car has been re-wired in some way. But when the DRL light comes on the buzzing is def. in the glove box are. Thanks in advance for you time and energy. It is a 2001 Honda Civic LX.
Failing DRL Relay will cause buzzing in the glove box area too. If your unable to locate the relay I have no idea where it could be or what has been modified in the vehicle...
Is it up higher towards the dash or can you readily see it once you remove the two panels? Sorry to keep bothering you, but I'm a big guy and it isn't easy getting in there like that...LOL! Maybe which pedal it's above would help.
Charles Anthony did you find a solution to the buzzing?
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Do you have a video for the Low Beam Cut Relay. I think I have that issue because the drivers side low beam is not working.
Thanks for your help on this.
Neil M I have no video showing the location of the low beam cut relay. If you lower the glove box there should be a 5 pin relay... meaning if you unplug the relay there should be 5 pins at the connector end. That is the low beam cut relay they do fail from time to time.
BackYard Tech Awesome. Thanks bud.
Hello does anyone know where the DRL module on a 2010 Honda CRV is located...? I can't seem to find any info. Thanks
2018: My 04' Element DRL light is buzzing. I have a battery operated fine tip soldering 'weapon'.
Hope this is the key, thanks!
Hello, I have civic 95, the DRL doesn't shutdown when I take the key off, how can I solve this? (I have changed the flasher arm.. same problem)
Clean and tin your tip. Also you should wick the old solder away and use use some flux and maybe learn how to solder proper and maybe practice.
Solder joints should look nice and shiny. Not trolling just some suggestions. Oh and don't use.that lead free crap solder 60/40 or 63/37 is what u want
My DRL is on in my 98 RL. I changed all bulbs, no luck. My left high beam is out. I have no headlights. My right high beam works however. Is it my module? Is it also under the dash?
Tia
Yes and yes.
@@crownedroyal2003 no, the DRL MODULE was not under driver side dash. 3 modules under there but none was drl. 98 Acura RL, might it be behind glove or trunk? Can't get direct answer online....
@BackYard Tech
I own a 2000 civic hatch aswell but.. since 2 days my headlight been acting up. On the light switch when put to low beam, it will not work and high beam will light.. Do you have a suggestion on how to go about this maybee?
I am out of suggestions, both headlights have the same problem
DRL seem to be working just fine, no check lights.. The other lights aswell
If you have a idea. Please let me know!
THANKS
I have no direction for you without any testing. Sorry.
Could you tell me where the drl mod is in Acura to 98' please. It went on and my headlights are out!!!
In my 2000 accord, it is above the gas pedal behind the panel located underneath the steering wheel column.
I hope that will give you an idea where it might be located on your Acura. Best of luck!
@@ralphexwhyzee8168 found it awhile back, behind back seat l, driver side. Worked too!
I'm having issues with this light intermittently with an '03 Element that I just bought. I think this looks like it's the ticket.
it worked..thanbks... wow
2007 honda odyssey lights will not shut off when head lights are off and van is off. battery goes dead as lights kill the battery. help.
You didn't show if was on / off with headlamps turned on/off as HV accord that it goes out with h lamps turned on then cones back on whenh lamps off
What kind of Soldering Iron did you use and what kind of wire did you use?
Rosin core solder and just your standard hand held solder gun.
BackYard Tech thx
Great. I did repair my 2005 Honda Civic. Thanks a lot.
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL HOW TO REPAIR MY WIPER OF MY CAR WHICH FAIL TO PARK. THANKS.
I have yet to take a failing wiper motor apart for repair.. Maybe a future video ?
Hey i was trying to locate my drl relay on my 01 honda civic lx and cant find it under my dash?
It should be in the same location as shown in the video. This is a Canadian vehicle. American Vehicles do not use DRL system. Is your Civic Built for the USA?
Is it same for 1999 prelude
Yes. location in the vehicle is different.
Do you know where is location for module in honda odyssey 2014 . Thanks
2014 Odyssey do not use this type of Day tim running lights. Wouldn't something that new be covered under new car warranty?
thanks good one
thanks so much!
My drl is flasing and makes noise , is that mean something wrong withmy module
Yes. Likely the contacts are poor. This repair should fix it.
I still don’t understand 1 thing, why it’s always them and only them rusting
Worked don't forgeyour ebrake
due too I had no low beam
Yesterday I had the worst day in a while. Slashed tire hr and a half to get a tire on the rim and then on the way home my cars horn started flipping off(while driving). Removed the horn relay and then the headlights wouldn't stop blinking I get home left keys in the car🤦♀️. How do I check for 98 Honda accord on these issues somebody please help
To stop the horn honking and lights flashing, disarm the alarm. You can do this via the key fab (unlock button) or unlocking the drivers door with the key from the outside.
@@crownedroyal2003 I will attempt. Thank you
