It bears mentioning that, Hubris, in many ways resembles an already-existing and many times often-overlooked and extremely under-appreciated title, "Seeking Dawn" which debuted some years back. It was critically panned for being buggy, but I'm willing to bet money that most people that "reviewed" it didn't actually play through the whole game. It was extremely impressive and ambitious for those very early days of PCVR and for posterity reasons, I would still highly recommend that folks still check it out, today. Not trying to hijack your review, I just wanted to pass this along for those that may have missed Seeking Dawn!

  • @Jarekthegamingdragon

I just beat this game and in all honesty, graphics are nearly all this game has going for it. Once I beat the game I didn't feel satisfied, I felt more like I wanted to complain to the internet. It's not the worst game I've played, it's passable, but it just does so much wrong and has so many bugs. When we have other VR titles like Vertigo Remastered and Lonn, this game is a solid two tiers down from Boneworks and Alyx.

Yea kinda sad, even though graphically it looks like it sucks I'm probably gonna pick up gambit tomorrow for half the price, looks like it has more content and they spent more time on fun. This is for sure a sale title though. 4 and a half "ok" hours for 40 bucks...eh...

It defenitely is. Graphically Cyborn nailed this one. Lets hope they improve on gameplay in their next game. The gameplay in hubris was fine. Spot on bro. I agree that Cyborn oversold themselves with the visuals. They kinda got themselves stuck in a corner from the get go. Hopefully they scale down their next project still keeping those gorgeous graphics and great level design but with more focus on gameplay.

great great review. The visuals and the detail of those maps is insane for a small studio. Lots of what I see here remind me of Doom 3 for whatever reason (perhaps the floating menus and the look of the spacecraft interiors?). I feel that VR is very unforgiving. We've seen quite a few examples of games that nailed many aspects but left some weaknesses that look a lot worse just because of the contrast with the strong points of the game.

@@GizmoMaltese That's such a simple way to think. Gaming doesn't have to be whatever you define it as. The best thing about this medium is the ability to choose the kind of games you wish to play. Some of us like story-rich games and others don't. Clearly, this game wasn't made for you in mind.
Also, if you look up the best games ever made, the majority of them are single-player or single-player-centric titles which should tell you something about how the general consumer would feel about your narrow-minded take.

Excellent review. I was really looking forward to Hubris even though I always thought it would look better than it would play; the demo was good but I wasn't blown away by it in any way other than good graphics. I still intend to play it, it looks great visually and gameplay seems good enough.
The real problem here though is the price; 40 euros for a 5-hour game??? What were they thinking? In all honesty there is no way to justify that kind of price when HL Alyx which is more than twice the length, and probably the quality, was that same price, or Saints and Sinners or many others.
At 25€, maybe even at 30€ I would purchase it on day 1 but with that short length I'm afraid I'll wait for a sale.

It has the arena mode update but I can't find the will to play it. I had performance issues in a few spots. I'd maybe give the game a 7/10 but probably more a 6.5/10 with the performance bugs. I bought and played through the game recently. Compared to this review, I found the game to be very stable. Which makes sense since they've had time to resolve the bugs, and they apparently did so. It wasn't glitchy at all for me. I didn't have problems climbing, etc.
The game is very very pretty, but as others have said, that's pretty much all Hubris has going for it. The game play is pretty meh and uninspired. It's as if the development team was all (very good) artists but no other significant skillsets on the team.
I highly recommend setting the game difficulty to maximum and turning off hints right away. At this setting, it's equivalent to what most games would label easy mode. Whereas the default difficulty is like the whole game is in tutorial mode.
I'm happy to have played all the way through the game. But it's not a game I would highly recommend or that I would recommend to most people. The main draw is the beautiful environments.

You said it took you 4 hours complete? at $40? Wow. 4 hour length in my mind is worth ~$15. Maybe 20 if everything clicks. I don't understand why devs do this. if they sell 1500 copies at 40 they'd sell 15000 at 15. Even if they're greedy it doesn't make any sense. It doesn't matter how great an experience you think you created for someone if no one play it. Especially for a 1st title from an Indy dev. What better way to foster good will and gain an audience than to have an affordable game that is accessible to a huge group of people.

It looks nice, but the gameplay seems a little lacking. Perhaps they'll build on it and make something better.
In VR, interaction and gameplay are king - which I feel is the opposite to current mainstream gaming. Plus, good art direction can make a game aesthetically pleasing without it being ultra realistic.

can see why this game is hyped up, but it doesn’t look like it’s for me. For one the lighting seems to have the “AAA brightness” problem where there isn’t any harsh lighting making it to where it has no atmosphere. The gameplay seems to have taking a back seat so that people can take a look at the pretty visuals like Boneworks and it’s physics. I mostly feel this way because it looks too easy. This is an issue a lot of VR games have when it comes to gameplay. (This could admittedly probably be summarized because I’m your stereotypical hardcore gamer).

Such a wasted potential. There is very little game on this graphically pleasing experience. I get that it's a first VR game for the developer... But I think they didn't even play any VR game. Too bad because it could really be something engaging. The world design is very nice ( but the level design is very bad 😔)... Maybe Hubris 2 will actually be a game 🙂

I was really hoping this game was on Half Life Alyx level. Disappointing it's not. Have been waiting forever for this game to drop. We just got the new Saints and Sinners on Quest and now this. The new TWD 2 game on the quest is almost a copy of the first. Those two games I've been waiting forever for that were a letdown. Maybe when TWD 2 comes out on PC it will be better.

I dont think hubris was a let down. You cant possibly expect tripple a gameplay from an indie studio. I'd suggest you lower your expectations for indie studios. If you start comparing Alyx to Hubris then yes you'll be let down. But to be honest. Hubris was exactly what i thought it would be. An amazingly beautiful yet flawed vr game that had an absolute blast in.
Also. Its cyborns first vr game ever. In other words, its their first game in general.
