    Lactose Intolerance: Are You Eating Too Much Dairy? Dr. Cabral & Thomas DeLauer…
    Thomas DeLauer: So what is the deal with dairy? When you're on a low-carb diet, a ketogenic diet, or even when you're fasting, a lot of times people tend to bring a lot more dairy into their diet because it seems to be a little bit more satiating for them. But what I want to discuss in this video, and I brought Dr. Stephen Cabral here with me, is how dairy actually affects your body when it comes down to intolerances. We always hear about lactose intolerance or we hear about maybe inflammation associated with dairy. We don't realize that there's multiple different avenues in which dairy can be wreaking havoc on your body.
    Now I'm not here to say that dairy is totally bad or totally evil, but there are a multitude of different things that could be occurring in your body. Why don't you introduce yourself real quick, just so everyone knows who you are?
    Stephen Cabral: I'm Stephen Cabral, I'm a board-certified naturopathic doctor and I specialize in Ayurvedic functional medicine and something called bio-regulatory medicine. Just like we were talking about right there, when we're talking about, "Is it the lactose, or is it the protein or what's going on in dairy?" We can actually clinically verify what's going on with people's bodies, but we can also give them some of their symptoms as well, like, "You're experiencing this if this is going on in your body." Yeah, I look forward to chatting about that today.
    Thomas DeLauer: Gotcha. What we're going to do with this video is I'm going to discuss a little bit more of the casein effect of dairy and kind of the protein effect and what's happening in your body, and then Dr. Cabral is going to totally blow your mind with all his science of the fructans and the different proteins and everything like that, stuff that I couldn't bring you on my own.
    First off, I'm just going to touch briefly on the lactose side of things. If you have a lactose intolerance, it's a whole different ballgame than some of the stuff where going to talk about. That one's pretty simple. You lack the enzyme or you have very minimal enzymes that really help break that down. You're not having the ability to actually digestively break it down for one reason or another. Pretty simple, pretty cut and dry, that's why people that have a lactose intolerance can usually take a lactase enzyme and not have as much of an issue.
    But it does sort of warrant a further investigation that if we're already missing an enzyme or lacking in an enzyme to break something down, we might have more of a bio-individual necessity to really have lactase coming in from other things, which tells us that we're not able to break down milk as an entirety, not just in the digestive system. It's like if our digestive system is telling us you shouldn't be having this, then what is happening is at a cellular level?
    What I want to discuss really quick is there's something interesting known as BCM7 in dairy. BCM7 is a component of a particular casein protein. Those of you watching, maybe you've heard of A2 casein protein, or maybe you've heard of A1 protein, or maybe you've just heard of casein protein like a lot of stuff from the companies will sell pure casein protein. The interesting thing is first of all, casein is a very toxic protein. It's not something we should be consuming a lot of, in fact it's very, very, very inflammatory.
    If you're consuming just straight up casein protein, I highly recommend that you probably just throw it away or don't use it, or at least do some more investigation in it. But what happened was way back when, hundreds of years ago when we were actually first starting to utilize cattle for dairy, there was a different structure of protein that was in them and it was known as A2 protein, so it was this different kind of casein that came from the dairy that functioned pretty well in our body. We didn't have too much of an issue. But as evolution went on and as everything started to change and there are some genetic mutation and as these cows were being hybridized and bred differently, it started to change and this protein went into what is now known as A1 casein protein. That is what is the modern protein, that's what we're seeing all the time.
    This protein is not easy to break down. This is the protein that triggers an opioid effect in the body, so dairy can actually be just as addictive gram-for-gram as heroin and some other street drugs, pretty darn powerful, and it all has to do with that.
    I'm going to leave it there, I can touch on that a little bit more, but I want to turn to you to be able to discuss some of the other things you were mentioning like fructans and everything like that before.

    Depends on the dairy. I learned only recently during a fast, what I had been suspecting for a while, that heavy cream I was using liberally was causing my morning nasal congestion. Heavy fat butter/cheese in moderation doesn’t bother me, whether it’s casein or lactose I don’t know, but have reluctantly given up cream.

    It would be great if you talked more about fermented food. I used to have trouble with dairy and went through a phase of an extremely restricted diet. Then when I added dairy back it was in the form of homemade kefir. It went down with no problem at all and I proceeded to drink it every single day for lunch with no indication of any problems-- in fact, my health at that time was just getting better and better.

    Here in Switzerland an incredible amount of cheese is consumed, even from raw milk. I was always told that European ancestry meant that farming over many generations allowed for the stomach to evolve the secretions to digest it. This may be complete B.S! I must admit though I never have inflammation whether I have have cheese fondue meals over winter or no cheese during the summer. Can some people be better assimilating it? There are some really delicious cheeses here, not sure how I will resist...

    Thanks for the info; this is just-in-time for me. I have been having digestive issues so decided to do a 2 week test with no dairy and no meat. The digestive issues have stopped. I am really having problems figuring out what to eat and have been doing nuts, olives, pickles and peas with hummus and some fruits so not sure if this is sustainable long term. I should mention I have been gluten free for 7 years so that is off the table too. I will be honest, I used to be a foodie and now dread mealtime :-( but am more focused on being healthy at this point.
    As a side note, I am hoping that I do not develop a sensitivity to nuts. I can't figure out anything else that is crunchy to eat. I just cannot get used to the idea of eating pork skins so that is not an option for me.

      S T just processed. I have noticed too that raw dairy doesn't cause my 'lactose' intolerance symptoms to show up. I think it has something to do with the over heating and processing that causes those reactions.

    • @sribonus804

      ST, I don't have any problems myself when I eat raw dairy. But pasteurized milk almost always causes me problems. I suspect that when milk is pasteurized, it changes the protein in some way that then causes the immune system to react.

    Very informative video, thank you. I do have a question though: can you please clarify your recommendations re: "dairy" as it pertains to a ketogenic diet? "Dairy" is a rather broad term, and in the context of how the science is working out in our bodies, I have to assume there's a difference between, say, whole milk and Kerrygold butter. Many people would simply classify both of those products as "dairy", however.
    So, with all of this info in mind, can you clarify some of the differences/recommendations for somebody on Keto, regarding different "dairy" products? For example:
    - Whole Milk
    - Half & Half
    - Heavy Cream
    - Sour Cream
    - Cream Cheese
    - Grass-fed butter (E.g. Kerrygold)
    - Other Cheeses (I.e. Cheddar, Mozzarella, Parmesan, etc.)
    - Etc.
    All of these are not created equal, and presumably have different effects on the body, despite all falling under the broader definition of "Dairy". Thank you for the great info, as always!

    • @xtine416
      @xtine416 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of those are considered dairy and butter is considered dairy unless it says vegan. I live a dairy free life cuz I am sensitive to Whey. Most labels will say contains Milk so those things should be avoided. However when my test results came back I did not react to Cheddar, mozzarella or goat cheese/milk. Needless to say I just stay away from them anyways.

    • @christopherernst5328
      @christopherernst5328 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. They're all technically "dairy", but they don't all have an identical effect on our bodies (E.g. your own negative tests for cheddar, mozzarella, & goat's milk). Therefore, to simply say "dairy does x, y, and z" is not necessarily accurate, since dairy comes in different forms, and interacts with our bodies in different ways. I'm mostly just curious for somebody on Keto, which "dairy" should we really try to avoid, and which "dairy" products are more or less perfectly fine to consume.

    • @pondboy3682
      @pondboy3682 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Ernst, I was wondering that all through the video, too! They did specifically mention heavy cream though, and I just checked on mine. It has 1g of protein per tbsp serving, presumably 80% casein. I'm sure it's better than milk, but it doesn't take much antigen to provoke an IgG antibody response.
      They did say the protein ratios can be affected by the cow's diet, so your Kerrygold might be ok. Make it into ghee, and it becomes a highly recommended food in Aruvedic medicine.

I don’t consume dairy either BUT, I did buy a 6 month supply of your (Science Based 6 Pack) consultants recommended whey protein powder. I consume it almost every day (besides long term fasting days) and I have had diarrhea since being on your program for the last 6 months! All this time I thought it was the MCT oil or coconut oil.... I persevered and stuck to the approved/recommended protocol because I’ve been getting great results (re: weight loss goals) but I thought I was following YOUR body transformation protocol and I’m just finding out that I’m not?! Why am I only finding about the side effects of whey protein now? Recently I was house-sitting for someone and they left a gallon of milk behind that I hated to see them have to dump out when they got back because they had obviously just opened it. Great video Thomas! I experienced this myself, I had a period on keto when I was consuming daily heavy cream and after a few days I was bloating, starting to feel sleepy and have some brain fog. After I stopped using it I was having stable energy again and my brain fog was gone. The only dairy products I use now are grass-fed butter daily and sometimes a bit of mascarpone cheese as a dessert.

    So Goats milk good?

  • @edithnell227
    @edithnell227 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problems people experience with dairy today are caused by the way it's produced and processed. The dairy consumed by humans for thousands of years did not cause us problems. In fact, many cultures could not have survived in harsh climates without their dairy animals (cattle, goats, reindeer, horses, camels, sheep, yaks, water buffaloes, etc.) Many of us would not be here today if our ancestors had not had dairy. I can't handle modern industrially-produced dairy, but have no problems with raw dairy. Raw milk contains it's own enzyme, lactase, to break down the lactose, but enzymes are destroyed by heating, hence the lactose intolerance problem.

    For those who would like more information on dairy see : realmilk.com, westonaprice.org, and books 'Nutrition and Physical Degeneration' (free on 'Project Gutenberg Australia') and 'Pottenger's Cats'. If our ancestral diets were high in dairy, then we will not be as able as those from non-dairying cultures, to absorb and utilize Calcium from other food sources. In this case our bodies have no option but to withdraw Calcium from our bones in order to fulfill more vital functions, resulting over time in bone loss.

    So I cut the carbs and upped the fat. I’m on Keto. Lost some weight. Now I have to cut dairy too? Ok, I can do it. But fuck what do we eat? Nuts, lettuce and a piece of chicken? I was excited to find so many Keto recipes on Pinterest. This video slams all of them. Literally every recipe you’ll find has cheese or something.

    Not sure if milk was the cause, doubt it, but had shoulder impingement, 8 months of physio later had movement back, but ballooned to 277 pounds, no exercise, always been a big guy, now have a spinal issue, which I'm in physio for, (again) needed to lose weight, keto diet, intermittent fasting 16/8 for 3 months, lost 42 pounds, plateau and moved to warrior diet, lost 9 pounds in a week, feeling good, I love this guy and the science he explains behind everything, I'm sticking to warrior, family thinks I'm nuts and starving myself, but I'm losing and feel fine, just need to get to ideal weight, fix my spine, and can get back to being the muay Thai warrior I was at 20, currently 43 lol.

    Poor people that are actualy trying to do Keto properly. If this keeps up, they won't be able to eat anything lol. In my opinion, the best way to do Keto properly and not get bored of it ( low food choices) is to do OMAD or at the very least 20 - 4 IF. Other then that I mean you'll get insanely bored with the diet and fall out of it all the time. I know so many people who think they are in Keto and I laugh when I hear what they eat as they usually ingest too much carbs or proteins and to little fat because not only are they trying to do Keto but also eat healthy. It is not an easy diet when you like food and things that taste good lol.
    Great info, but I mean most people already know that dairy is bad for you. I'm just happy I never did the Cassein powders.
