I used to have that problem but I found playing around with the hook size helped, and taking breaks. You definitely can't do a t-shirt yarn project in 1 sitting with happy hands :D
Hi Sandy! Hello from Italy :) I usually use size 10mm for t-shirt yarn because I like my work to be pretty tight, but you can use a size 12mm if it is more comfortable, or a size 15mm! Thanks for following.

It's usually cotton or polyester

You can make it yourself out of old shirts. There are lots of tutorials how to do it :)
