    I have always cut them into strips and then connected the strips... which leaves a lot of annoying knots. I love how you make the shirt into one strip!! It is so simple!! Thank you for sharing!

      I've never done this before. But my fiance died and I've been saving his t-shirts and I love crocheting. So now I think I can marry the two. ️ ☺️ what type of t-shirt fabric do I use? Does it matter? Because some of them are 100% cotton and some have polyester any advice before I start cutting? I would truly appreciate it and I hope this comment is read by those that are healthy and staying well and I pray for those that are not ❤️

      @@Needlepointers For people that don't want to tie the yarn around their head I would like to try using a bead and go around the ear threading both ends into a bead and pulling it tight. Do you think this is a good option and do you know what size bead I would need. I cut my strips 1".

  • @deborahweimer873

    Thanks for the video - works easily. One suggestion - I found that it was so much easier to do the final clipping if I slipped it over my leg while sitting down. It made it so much easier to cut with the larger leg surface and having both hands free.

    Thank you so much! Thrilled to discover this link on the Million Mask group project on Facebook, where many of us who are sewing masks to donate to medical professionals battling COVID-19 are using t shirt yarn as the source for the ties a mask needs to hold it snug against one’s face. I have shared this too in my public COVID-19 album for anyone else needing it. Thank you and stay safe and healthy and in good spirits!

      This was also a method i wanted to try out for mask ties because of a facebook post i saw, however I heard this will not hold up in the hospitals' washing machines. Anyone have any ideas to prevent it from getting shredded up while getting washed?

    • @sarahwebstervodrey9654
      @sarahwebstervodrey9654 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kym Cores I have not seen that as a concern, at least not from the hospital I will be donating them to. I guess I assumed individuals would wash them at home in their own facilities. I have been making mine sturdy, and washed and dried the ties, whether rope or t shirt yarn (both 80-100% cotton)ahead of time so the shrinkage could happen immediately. I don’t plan on doing it but to stabilize the t shirt yarn, I bet you could sew a zigzag stitch right down the middle of whatever ties you’re using, and that would likely make them sturdier. Or perhaps use Stitch Witchery? That’s synthetic though and I’ve read some synthetics will melt in the industrial strength hospital washers and dryers. I will be interested to learn how you solve that issue. I will be using a lot more T-shirt yarn now that my dear husband ordered huge discs of precut t shirt yarn from Amazon, which comes from Fox Yarn Company.
      Sending very best wishes!

    Ok this is brilliant!
    I have finally reached a point in my decluttering where I know there's tshirts I am no longer going to wear. I don't want to donate them, because the quality is not one I would buy, but they are not at a rags stage. I'm also weirdly sentimental about them.
    But I saw some videos about making cool pot holders with old tshirts and I want to try that.

    • @calijeofficial
      @calijeofficial 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mary W Klauke Hi! The T-shirt I used didn’t have a huge problem with fraying, so I didn’t have to sew the ends of anything. I used them as straps, and they did end up creating a few pills on the mask, but I just cleaned them up with a roller, and I think they will act as a great substitute for string.

    • @calijeofficial
      @calijeofficial 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a pair of leggings that were kaput so I thought I’d cut it into strips and use it for covering hangers. It’s been working pretty good since the fabric is stretchy. Lesson learned though it’s good to have the strips an even width , mine weren’t even, so they went wide/narrow/wide

      @@Needlepointers I just subscribed. Thank you so much ❤️ I'm only about halfway through the videos so far. Does it matter the blend of fabric used in the T-shirt? Some have polyester, some are all cotton? Thank you in advance ️ ❤️

    This is really simple. How do you manage the t shirts that have side seams?

    • @Needlepointers
      @Needlepointers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      T-shirts without seams give the best results because you will have a continuous smooth yarn. A shirt with seams can be used but the seams will cause the t-shirt yarn to be thicker where the seams present themselves. However, usually this is not a problem.

    great video...just one question- about how many yards does the average tshirt make?

    • @Needlepointers
      @Needlepointers  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The t-shirt I used in the video was a large and it made about 40 yards of yarn.

    Tip... To make your diagonal cuts loop the project over an ironing board for a flat surface.

      Hi Alan! Thanks for your question. We have sewing scissors and like the Gingher brand a lot. Our sewing scissors are only used to cut fabric. Also, if you happen to be left-handed like me, be sure you get left-handed scissors. It really makes a huge difference. We have a scissors guide available here: www.needlepointers.com/main/youtubecontent.aspx?youtubepageid=321
