Volcanic Off-Roading: Mogollon Rim to Cinders to Jacob Lake! Part 4 - Ultimate Adventure 2017

- Part 4 of Ultimate Adventure 2017. We awoke on Day Five to a stunningly panoramic view from our campsite high atop the Mogollon Rim. With all of Arizona laid out below us we drank in the scenery before mounting our 4x4s and heading for Flagstaff, Arizona, to wheel one of the coolest natural features in the area. The Cinders area is just what the name implies: huge mounds of volcanic cinder, or less specifically, volcanic lava pebbles. With huge, towering mountains of cinders several hundred feet high and sprawling over a wide area, the group was turned loose to explore and hammer down on the throttle. Making sure to stay well clear of any vegetation, pretty much any line is allowed here so the rigs with more horsepower put on a really good show. And those that didn’t have power to spare put it in Low Range and did their best to putt up the steep slopes. With some fun under our belt, we hit the road because we still had over six hours to get to our campsite at Jacob Lake. On Day Six we awoke at 8,000-foot campsite and hustled over to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for a Griswold view of the rim and then aired down for 180 miles of dirt adventure driving, including a visit to the Grand Canyon at its most remote location accessible by motor vehicle. After that, it was more dirt into the night.

Fred is perhaps one of the best presenters on MT and TH-cam. He could make a 3/8" drive socket wrench review entertaining.

I drove that exact route to the north rim like two weeks before you guys. It's probably a good thing. My son and I wouldn't have paid any attention to the Grand Canyon with all those rigs in sight

I was originally very skeptical the new commentary and leader of this UA, but it seems like the commentary and editing got a bit better as it went. Also I think a ton of people would love to see Rick as slightly more involved.
The cool part about this area of the country is that every bit of this trip could be done on dirt, but I understand that with so many trucks and breakdowns they couldn't take the time to stick to dirt.
I've lived in AZ for 25 years and I didn't know we had a volcanic ash trail! That's so cool!

Grand Canyon Lodge was built completely from native materials found on the adjacent Kiabab Plateau. Illustrated in the kids book ' brighty of the grand canyon'. AWESOME place to see

My 84 F-150 4.9 with granny 1st was slow and go,buddies jeeps and FJ40,s with v-8,s took 2 or more tries up the hills due to spinning all over and not getting anywhere

i used to drive a cab in Flag, theres a group of people living on the backside of the crater, in an off grid camp.
With the exception of play hill and the face of 100, stock Subarus have no issues out in the cinders.

Based on discussion in the previous videos (like of the camera crew's van) it looks like there are some bypasses that might let less-modified 4x4s make it. Is the route published somewhere?
Here is what we all want to know. What vehicle didn't fail? And was it the builder or the equipment?
I prefer the North Rim to the south, it's about 1000 feet higher and far less crowded... Point Sublime is a fun place to 4x4 to. Nothing difficult, but a nice place to camp out.

That's part of wheeling . They are filming a real off-road adventure. Not some idyllic Cheesy 4x4 show where nothing goes wrong.
@Joe Gregg The whole lava field is uneven like that, even the places with no slope. It's fun to zip around in it but it's definitely hard on the vehicles after awhile.

Good stuff as always gents, but please... more wheelin' less sight-seeing. It's cool to mention some of the sights to give an idea of the trail/path the group is taking but we watch these specials to see some of the most capable off-road drivers in some of the most capable off-road vehicles... To this point it's been more like a Nat' Geo special than UA.

I love watching UA every year. But, this one seems to be a little boring to watch. Just due to lack of wheeling.. Seems mostly road days with the occasional trail. Not nearly as entertaining as past UA's.
