No Pavement: Overlanding Phoenix to Crown King to Payson! Part 2 - Ultimate Adventure 2017

  • Part 2 of Ultimate Adventure 2017. The standard Ultimate Adventure formula has typically been one hardcore off-road day followed by a long, slogging road day to get to the next trail system. However, for UA2017 even our road days required low-range. With another incredibly hot day in store, we began Day Two high-tailing it out of Phoenix, Arizona, into the outlying mountains and began climbing in elevation. As the trail continued the scenery got better, the terrain got a bit more challenging, and mechanical issues began to manifest themselves. By the time we got to our camp that night, we had plenty of repairs to make from rebuilding a steering box to bending suspension links back into shape, welding stuff back together, and more. Day Three began early and promised an equally slim amount of pavement as Day Two as we hopped on the DeSoto Mine Trail. With rocky ledges, steep switcbacks, and killer scenery, the hot, dusty trail continued until many of the vehicles were on vapors. After a quick fuel stop, we were back on dirt and more overlanding, taking the Great Western Trail to our final destination for the day. In the end, this would the longest off-road day in Ultimate Adventure history. But it’s not over and the rest of UA2017 would see more firsts for this event.

Wen't on a "Casual" jeep ride up from Apache Jnctn to 4 peaks last year about 7000ft. Those switchbacks had my palms sweating the entire way up. And there's crosses everywhere! Cool experience for a prairie boy Going from Saguaros to pine trees. Amazing trails in Arizona. Beautiful state.

In 1998. My buddy and I. Used this trip day ride for practice. Getting ready to ride Baja. We parked at lake pleasant and 2 hrs to krown king couple times on to Prescott. When we final did get to Baja those practice days paid off some days were over two hundred miles in 6 hrs . I remember seeing those Jeep guys 😂 crawling along. It would take all day to do what we did in a couple hours. But there the coolest PEOPLE your ever going to meet.

I think I figured out the problem with the narrating. There isn't enough personality in it, there is a lot of professional script reading. We want to hear things like how cool that front clip swapped jk was, we heard that it was interesting. I guess my point is that most of the consistent viewers want Rick to narrate it. It seems like we won't get that. Don't make it the same as his, it just needs more life.

The burgers are great! I live in Michigan but a good friend lives in Congress, outside of Wickenburg. Spent 5 months out there a couple winters ago, CK was a popular ride, though I never did it from Phoenix. The single track mountain side trails are the best, especially when you have to back up to a turn around spot...

They used Model Ts before they had Jeep. That Copper canyon has mountain lion roaming it. They should have went to the top of Squaw Peak. Easy enough climb with a gold mine along the way. Haven't been through there in 12 years so I don't know if it is still operating. The rocks around there can slice your tire sidewalls so not a place to go without at least 6 ply tires.

Back in the 80s in an 84 Toyota pick up that was stock, I discovered the back road to Crown King, we take a girlfriend and go up the back way, now I seem to think that was probably pretty stupid, but the road wasn’t so beat up like it is now. Also the De Soto mine, it’s amazing how the roads have deteriorated over the years, we used to go up to the De Soto mine all the time, there used to be big water bars in the road which actually were built to keep people from driving up to the mines, I believe it was the swastika mine, up above the De Soto, that you couldn’t get to you unless you walk, and it is kind of funny to see these fancy Rigs and I did it in stock vehicle, it did make a difference going up to the De Soto in an 89 Jeep Cherokee, with Goodyear Wrangler tires back in the day , lots more wheel travel, can’t wait to do it again in the jeep grand Cherokee with a long arm lift, that should make things a lot smoother, great video guys thanks for sharing
