MCTS 70-680: Windows7 Bare Metal Restore using a system image

  • This video looks at restoring your Windows 7 using a system image saved to the network using Windows Backup and Restore. Check out / itfreetraining or itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. In this case, the original image is taken from a Hyper-V virtual machine and then restored to a VMware virtual machine. Both virtual machines have different hardware and the restore is a Bare Metal Restore to different hardware.
    Demonstration 01:45
    To be able to recover Windows 7 using Backup and Restore, you need to ensure that the backup you performed had a system image included or you manually created a system image. A system image will save all the file and folders on the hard disk to a VHD file. Backup and Restore also supports a file and folder style backup. Because of this, the system image could be used to recover your operating system. If there were changes made to the user documents file since the system image was performed and the File and Folder style backup was run, this backup can be used to restore the user files while the system image can be used to restore the operating system. This video will look at using both to restore the operating system. It should be pointed out however, if your system image backup is up to date, this is the only backup that you need to use to restore the system.
    Demo
    Backups in Windows 7 are done using the Backup and Restore utility. This can be found in the control panel under "system and security." A system image backup can be included in a backup or can be performed manually by selecting the option on the left hand side, "create a system image backup."
    In this video, a system image is saved to the network. When saving a system image to the network, the one image file can only support one backup instance. This is because this feature required some features of NTFS that are not supported when connecting to a network share. In other words, incremental changes to the system image are not recorded. A system image performed over the network will only contain the one system image with the files from the last time it was run. If you were to the save the system image on a drive that had NTFS, a history of system images would be present with the number of revisions depending on how much space the hard disk had.
    To restore the operating system on another computer with different hardware, you need software to boot the computer. In Backup and Restore you can create a system repair disc. If you have the original Windows 7 DVD, you can use that to boot and select the option "repair your computer" on the welcome screen.
    Regardless of whether you use the repair disc or the Windows 7 disc, select the option from the system recovery options to restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier. Once you browse to the system image, it will be used to recover your computer.
    Once the system image has been copied to the new computer, you can also restore additional user documents that have been backed up using the file and folder backup. If Backup and Restore can't restore particular files because they are in use, logout and login as another user and perform the restore using that user.

    Glad you like the video. In answer to your question
    1) You need to map a drive to the location that is holding the backup. You can than select this backup and restore from it.
    2) The easiest way to do this is to perform the restore. Once the restore is done, shrink the partition using disk manager to free up some disk space. Once this is done you will be able to create a new partition.

  • @itfreetraining

    You could try, depending on different the hardware is you may have some issues. Particularly with laptops this can cause problems due to them coming so much extra software supplied by the manufacturer. I would personally look at what customization you can perform with Group Policy to meet you needs. This allows changes later and does not mean you need to configure the operating system. Once you have one machine type running, consider using an image base software solution. There are free ones.

    Whats the password for windows security? To re image?

  • @itfreetraining
    @itfreetraining  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The repair disc is used to boot the computer to access the system image. You could also use a Windows PE disc or even the original Windows 7 disc to this. If you can access the system image from inside Windows and apply it than you don't need anything.

    You can use backup and restore to backup to an external harddisk. Depending on the operating system, backup and restore may require a dedicated hard disk for the backup which needs to be as large or larger than the drive you are backing up. Newer OS can backup to any harddisk that has room to hold the backup files. Once your restore it to the new system, Windows plug and play should with any luck reinstall the drivers.

      itfreetraining As it turns out your procedure was perfect however it didn't work for my situation. I was restoring a 60GB image to a 240GB SSD drive and it just wouldn't work - was churning out errors each time. My previous drive was 1TB and new SSD was 240GB. Turns out Windows restore does not allow you to restore an image created on a bigger drive to a smaller one even if it will fit comfortably in the same space. Pure stupid coding. I ended up using Acronis Backup off a Linux disk.

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** That is correct, Windows will only allow you to restore on a drive the same size or larger. It is very frustrating limitation. I am glad to hear that you found another solution. Since this video is part of a course we have to cover this information, however will look in releasing some videos on alternative methods to over come some of these limitations.

      I think if you partition your drive and restore only the partition with your stuff on it, not the free space, it works. Not that you need it now.

    How are you doing the restore? Backup and Restore? ImageX? Also are using Windows PE or a recovery disk? Is this 32bit or 64bit? Are you getting and error message? I think the problem may be that you need to use the wrong disc to do the restore.

    When you perform a bare metal install it removes that Hal and re detects the hardware. After the install you may need to install graphics drivers or other driver to enable features like Aero peek. It is not designed to be a complete restore like imaging. Normally we record the demos using Remote Desktop, however in some cases we have to use a direct capture. So some of the demo was recorded in remote desktop which does not support Aero Peek and some was direct capture which does.

    I assume that your ubuntu install is on a separate partition from Windows. This is fine, imagex won't effect the other partition. The only problem that you may have is the boot loader may get over written and will need to be fixed in order to boot of both operating system. In other words, Ubuntu make stop appearing to the menu selection screen when the computer boots.
    Glad you like the video.

  • @itfreetraining

    Yes you will. Bare metal recovery everything expect the device drivers. The device drivers are re detected and reinstalled.

  • @itfreetraining

    You could do this. There are also image software that you can use that will do the same thing. However, if you do use these you should run sysrep after you reimage the computer.

    It sounds like Windows PE does not have a network driver for the network card that you are using. You can add the network driver to the Windows PE image, or install a network card that it supports.

    When your configure a backup schedule you have the option to include a system image with the backup. For this reason the system and the backup files time and date should be pretty close. I would suggest recreating the backup schedule and checking all the options. Sounds like something was not set correctly or a manual system image has been run.

    Thanks for the reply. It's puzzling because it's the first time I've ever run a backup on this system, and the external HDD was completely formatted. No manual system image was initiated. I chose the 'Let Windows Choose' option, which is where the system image comes from. The date and time of the 'Backup of C' folder corresponds exactly with a Windows system update. Very puzzling. Think I'll format the HDD again and set up a fresh backup. Thanks again for the help and videos :-)

    Unfortunately this is how Windows Backup and Restore works. It requires the destination to be as big or bigger than the original drive. So if you original image drive was 150GB and the new drive is 500GB this it will work. If you image file is 150gb big but is from a 500GB hard disk you will need a 500GBb hard disk.

It was created successfully, but when I select 'restore files' from the backup and restore window, the date is different. The system image date is correct, but the backup of files and folders is 6 days earlier. Is there a reason for this? Thanks in advance :-)

    My Windows recovery options don't have the "Advanced" button, where it let's you choose to search the network for an image. Instead it has a "show more restore points". I can't see how to point it to the network.
    I don't actually need to restore anything, I just want to validate that my Image on the network is going to be usable if I do need it someday

    Hi. Great video!
    There's something similar that I am ttrying to do but don't know if its ginna work.
    I need to install Windows 7 with user profiles and customised settings on 70 new machines. So I was thinking that I could install windows 7 on one machine, create user profiles, customise settings and then do a bare metal backup on that machine. And then do a full recovery on all the other new machines, one by one using that backup image. You think it would work?

    Thanks for the great video! I followed it exactly and it worked, but created a problem that I hope you can help me with. I replaced a 320GB primary HDD with a 1TB primary HDD, all the rest of the system remained the same. After completing the process I was surprised to see that my new 1TB HDD was only showing as the same size as my old 320GB HDD. This was when in File Manager and I right clicked on "OSDisk (C:)" and clicked on "Properties".
    However, when I went to "Computer Management" then "Storage" and then "Disk Management" it appears that it has divided up the new 1TB hard drive (Disk 0) into three segments (perhaps called partitions?). They are... 1) "OSDisk (C:)" .....2) "Recovery" ......3) "Unallocated". My question is how do I get the massive 633GB "Unallocated" section assigned to the "OSDisk (C:)" so that I can use it as normal? Many thanks!!!

    • @MGB-fs9gh
      @MGB-fs9gh 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I should mention that the partitions are in the order of 1) "OSDisk (C:)" .....2) "Recovery" ......3) "Unallocated" since everything I read sounds like I can only extend a CONTIGUOUS partition into an "Unallocated" section of the disk and the "Recovery" is between the "OSDisk (C:)" and the "Unallocated". When I right click on "Recover" it gives me the option to "Extend Volume" but when I right click on "OSDisk (C:)" the "Extend Volume" option is greyed out (can't be clicked on). Again, thanks for any advice you can provide!

      1979 MGB In order to make the partition larger the other partitions needs to be moved. Not really an easy thing to do in Windows. I would suggest using this free software for home use. Assuming you are using for home use. It will allow you to make the partition larger by moving the other partitions to the end of the drive.

    This is well and good if you made a backup on a network share. Not everyone has that. I made a backup to a second internal hard drive, and Windows 7 still can't find it.
    How do I get Windows 7 Recovery to detect a WindowsImageBackup on an attached internal HDD if I get the same error as you do at 7:22? I can browse to the folder in Command Prompt or when searching drivers, and I can load filed from the image within a new install of Windows, but I can't get Recovery to read it for a BMR.

      dir Q:
      (Replace Q: with one drive letter at a time from the letters that the mountvol command showed you, e.g.
      dir D:
      dir E:

      until you see a folder "WindowsImageBackup" on the screen. Let's assume it is F:\WindowsImageBackup.
      dir F:\WindowsImageBackup /s
      (This command should show you the contents of the image folder, with files totalling more than 10 GBytes)
      Now perhaps this image folder is missing, incomplete or inaccessible."
      The commenter went on to say:
      "I have to add that I am disappointed with the native imaging facility under Windows 7. It is temperamental and its functionality is extremely limited. I recently bought myself a copy of Acronis TrueImage 10 and its is to the Windows imaging tool like a fully functional motor cycle is to a child's tricycle. Other brand imaging tools are just as functional - just make sure that they are certified for Windows 7."

      itfreetraining Well, I might not need this now actually since I did a clean install from 10 back to w7, and I was looking to upgrade to w10 again but I couldn't cuz windows updater wouldn't work, so I was gonna try to go back to a system restore point but I think I got my updater to work so yeah :P Thanks for answer though

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're most welcome. Windows Updater can be fickle, you may have to manually install some updates to get it to work then it'll work automatically from there. Feel free to ask any other questions!

    Is the internet absolutely needed for a bare-metal restore? I've built a new PC, and it has no internet access just yet. Thanks.

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do not need the internet for a bare metal restore. It is useful to have a network drivers in case you need to access the internet afterwards to download additional device drivers.

      itfreetraining Thanks very much. Do I need to put my licence key in again with this? as I haven't the slightest idea what it is. I'm fairly confused as to how it works if I'm honest. Is there a guide on doing it off-line at-all?

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ei’ríġ Proinsias Dammantaċ Ó Gamhna. You will need to enter in your license key again. Depending on what you are trying to do it may be easier to use imaging software.

      Thanks. I've used the imaging software but have had difficulty with the different hardware. I'm using Hiren's Boot CD. I've used the 'Fix HDD Controller' programme, then booted into safe mode. When I go into regular mode Windows 7 essentially commits suicide by installing drivers that don't work with my new motherboard. However, in safe mode it doesn't seem possible to do the install from the motherboard's disc. Thanks again.

      How are you trying to access it? Just connecting it to Ubuntu as a secondary drive? Or are you using a Partition tool to check it out? Perhaps look into a Partition recovery tool which can fix damaged partitions.

    My laptop is asking to restore using system image or load driver/operating system...I don't have system image saved in any network.. I don't know how to start my laptop. Can you please help me??? Also I want to know that after recovering all data from all disc will be removed or only from C drive? Please help me

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When doing the restore, the wizard will display any system images that are available. If there are none there Windows has not been saving or them or there are no valid ones available. If this is the case, you won't be able to use system restore. Your laptop hopefully came with some recovery CD's. This will allow you to re-install your operating system. However, using the recovery CD's will erase everything on the hard disk. If you can use system restore, this should leave your data files intact, but personally I would back them up first.
