    Thumbs up. I wish Leather Machine Co. would have made a video like this when I bought mine from them. Instead I had to scour TH-cam for instruction from users. On the other hand, great purchase (expensive purchase - about $1800 for mine with shipping) that I have not regretted once. Makes skiving so much more consistent as well as quicker. I've sharpened mine about 3 times since purchase in 1/21, but I only use it about once a week.

    Thank you for making a comprehensive video on this machine. The NP4 has changed the way I make things. It is my number 2 machine after the sewing machine.
    I sharpen very often, because I skive garment leather. I was told that it couldn't. It just requires exceptional sharpness. I have never felt the blade even slightly warm.
    After deburring, I noticed that the blade is slightly curled outward. I've tried different techniques to avoid it, but ... So, now, after deburring, I move the sharpening stone (power engaged) to barely touch the blade... no sparks, but you sound changes. I am shining a flashlight on the blade edge from above/ left (left shoulder ...) which highlights the curl. I continue for 10 to 20 seconds until the curl disappears. Sounds complicated, but it's easy, and quick. And super sharp.

    As always, a great instructional video. Thanks for taking the time to make these. Newbies like myself would be up a creek without your advice and demonstrations of these machines.

    Looking at getting this soon! Last year, I stumbled upon an ad for a retiring leather craftsman - he made goods for Armani, Gucci, and others. I bought a bunch of beautiful leather from him, and he gave me 5 big boxes of scraps big enough for my bag making and wallets. I have been using the thinner stuff like lamb with no problem, but I really need a skiver to use all of the beautiful thicker leather.

    Thank for the tip and tricks . I got NP 10 at Prescott . Big learning curve . First thing I did was grin onto my blade with the rolling presser foot top side .
    I had used yours in class and loved it ! That was why I got one . I do wish I would have just went ahead and got the NP 4 instead of 10 .. hopefully down the road they will make video on the NP 10. I have been told it is the same a the 4 for adjustments.. So far it seems to be more involved due to the two rollers top and bottom .
    Anyone who gets either 4 or 10 needs to buy a couple of low grade sides to practice and get used to the machine .
    Thanks again .

    Perfect video. To the point.
    The only question is what adjustments do you have for bell cutter to presser foot clearance. Horizontal bell cutter adjustments. You started to talk about it that some adjustments are needed after sharpening but never covered that other back knob. Do you bring bell cutter right up to presser foot or do you like a certain clearance
    Thanks

    • @makersleathersupply1220
      @makersleathersupply1220  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on how thick you want the skived area to remain

    • @miker794
      @miker794 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The adjustment I am thinking of is you said in video that as the blade wears from sharpening you need to adjust it forward towards the foot. Till the blade just touch’s foot or do you like a 1/16 clearance.

    Thank you for this video, it was very helpful. I have a different brand but would love if you wouldn't mind answering my question. When I start to skive a piece of leather, especially if it's a longer piece, I have to start skiving then stop and make sure the trim underneath isn't wrapping around the ball. Are there any adjustments you can think of to prevent that? Thank you.

    • @makersleathersupply1220
      @makersleathersupply1220  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive had that happen once or twice. I take the drawer that catches the scraps out and just let them fall straight down to the ground to try to help prevent it.

  • @SueReeddreamscape
    @SueReeddreamscape 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey Aaron, very informative. I got mine all set up as per video but what would cause the leather to not pull through or slide through like yours does? I adjusted my presser foot lower and that didnt work. If I lift the presser foot up nd place the leather underneath it to start. I have to pull for it to move, still won't slide.

    Aaron, can you please tell me how to go about increasing the speed for sharpening the blade and if you would know the normal skiving settings for skiving leather? I'm a little frustrated because I bought a Cobra NP4 machine and the Cobra Class 3 and at the time and I didn't get any instruction on the bell skiver at all so I called the company I bought it from and they can't tell me how to increase the speed or get any instructions for me. Two Questions can you skive the curve on that piece ? You skived all way around except the curve. And where does the scrap go ? As you can tell, i dont have one .

    • @makersleathersupply1220
      @makersleathersupply1220  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can skive a concave or convex curve. The scrap falls into a little drawer under the table, but I do a ton of skiving so I take the drawer out and let the scrap fall on the floor to be swept up later.

    I’d recommend leaving the presser foot up when not in use. It’s easy to forget and leave it down. The spring in there isn’t the greatest and gets weak.
