    I worked as a medical scribe in the ED. It was really cool to learn about how the ER field even came about. One of the older ER physicians I worked with told me that he worked 24 hour shifts and only really saw patients for 8 hours and slept in the doctor's sleeping room the rest of the time because the ER wasn't a place that patients came to. Times have changed now from then! Now the ERs are always flooded with people 24/7.

    • @DrAdnan
      @DrAdnan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kay C I was a med scribe for a bit too! I agree, it’s fascinating how different med specialties came about. I wonder if the increase in patients is due to the increased population size.

    He clearly loves his specialty and we need more docs like him.
    No disrespect since I know the process through medicine isn’t easy regardless, he came off more conceited. EM isn’t very competitive, at least compared to other specialties like surgery. Overall it’s easy to get into though more challenging than like family medicine.

    • @DrAdnan
      @DrAdnan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree about the former and disagree about the latter. I think he’s more passionate, and far from conceited. I’d agree that EM isn’t the most challenging specialty to get into, but it’s certainly not the least, or easy, especially for reputable programs.

    Is it True that emergency medicine is that competitive? Med school insiders listed it as one of the least competitive specialities to match into?

    • @DrAdnan
      @DrAdnan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it isn’t as competitive nowadays, but it’s not necessarily easy to match. ~1/5 of our M4’s went into EM iirc so it’s still pretty popular

    02:57 he says that EM has been the hardest specialty to get into. Isn't derm, plastics, neuro surgery, Ortho, ent, optho harder to get in?

    • @DrAdnan
      @DrAdnan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure what metrics he’s using (maybe the level of increasing competitiveness?), but in terms of step scores and percent matched, I think you may be right.

    Emergency Medicine has always been very structured, scalfolded and on a platform that also includes occupational medicine. The issue is as follows..not all regions are cities with factories, manufacturing etc. Even West Side Story shows how occupational medicine works and emergencies...with tailors, dancers, choreography, shoes, tanners, buildings, troupes, shoe manufacturing and testing (notice they dont wear sneakers that I can tell), competition, singing etc Then we go into other topics, like idle time, immigration, unemployment, job creation, etc...side walks, streets, basketball courts, tennis etc...yes, we see the courts...

    • @dirk2655

    how different is the job with an emergency medicine PA vs doctor? are there major differences? or the medicine they practice is pretty much the same?

    • @DrAdnan
      @DrAdnan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Physicians tend to have more of the more complicated cases/procedures and be the final say/person everyone goes to if there’s uncertainty. There’s more liability for physicians since everything is usually under their name. Physicians often work longer or might have to stay past their shift more ive seen since other providers are often unionized and work more strictly based on shifts. The pay is also greater for physicians. PA’s can maneuver into a lot of of the specialties easier. Overall though you’ll get to see and do a lot as a PA and it’s a great career in my opinion, especially given the logistics.

      Adnan A so actually i just graduated from PA school and am kind of regretting not going to medical school. Do you think it’s worth it for a PA to go back for medical school? Or just start living life? I am interested in emergency medicine specialty. I want the more knowledge, autonomy, prestige, and money that comes with it. However, if the jobs are pretty similar in the EM field, should i just stick to being a PA and start earning a six figure salary in my mid 20s? Im in a huge internal battle, would love some of your input hopefully! (Btw im from Texas, so medical schools are ~100k here for 4 years, so cost isn’t that heavy compared to other states)

    • @DrAdnan
      @DrAdnan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, if I already went through PA school, I would start working as a PA and see how I liked it, and if it checked all the boxes then I’d continue it. You can still make good money as a PA with your main job or even picking up other things. Being an EM doc would be 4+3 years, plus at least 1 yr to apply, plus however long it takes you to prep for the mcat or meet whatever other prereqs you need to do. Then you’d come out with all those student loans as well (100k is still a lot). If there’s no way you could be happy not being an MD/DO then I’d start prepping ASAP, but if there’s a possibility you could still be happy without it then I’d test the waters for at least 1-2 years as a PA.
