No Man's Sky: Grit

  • A small and unlikely team was behind one of the most ambitious and anticipated games of 2016. In this 2019 GDC Main Stage session, Hello Games' Sean Murray takes us behind the scenes during the intense and dramatic launch of one the biggest selling new IPs in recent years. He demonstrates how his team found the grit to deal with releasing an innovative and polarizing game into an increasingly vocal gaming landscape, and details how through determination and love in 2019 they have built to record player numbers and positivity amongst their most negative detractors. This candid and open discussion will show the power of focusing on what you do, rather than what you say, in the face of adversity. -- Watch live at / gdc

Sean and HG decided to go old school, after being caught up in the new school and letting/having it nearly ruin them. Their strategy after the release catastrophe was simple: We don't listen to what people are saying unless it helps us make the game better. They didn't listen to the press, the hype, the expectations, the noise. They listened to the people who were playing their game who wished it was better. And they made a game that they wanted to play too. And it fucking worked.
You could tell pretty early on that Sean had a passion for this game that was matched by few for any single project in their lives. His descriptions of the potentials before the game I don't think were him lying, I think they were him dreaming. I think he truly intended to try to make the game what he promised from the beginning. Because you don't spend 5 years afterwards as a game studio supporting a game with massive amounts of content for free without loving that game. Sean and the HG team went on a labor of love to fix what they had made into what they had wanted to make. And it fucking shows.
In 2019, the game would have just been released early access on Steam, and they would have spent 3 years building the game to a 1.0 state, and then probably would have kept going even then. This would have saved them SO much, but it wouldn't be the game it is today if that had happened. The absolute beating this guy took in the press after the release was channeled directly into proving that he wanted to fix it. And he fucking did.
Good job guys. I love the game.

As a musician I can attest to that aspect of the creative process. Writing the song is fun, and everything else that comes after is less fun with occasional spikes of fulfillment. Recording is brutal. Mixing is brutal. Ultimately the song never comes out exactly as you envisioned it, and you consider it done and upload it somewhere only when you're so close to hating it that working on it any further means you might scrap the whole thing and start over. Again.

I personally believe that no mans sky was garbage when it first came out, however I gave 0 shits about most things, I played it for alittle bit, got bored, not really sure why I got bored, I think other games just had my attention. Anyways the game progressed and got another update, I played for a bit, played about 30 hours but got bored again, there wasnt much that you could do. Then next came out. I enjoy exploring but when there is nothing but bs to explore it gets boring, now however the game is at a point where since next came out I've put 130 hours into no mans sky, just played for 2 hours this morning.
I'm also thinking about buying a vr headset just so I can play the vr part of the game come beyond update. However, I expect that these guys at hello games have more to do. This game better not be done and they really should work on more depth of the game, I expect life to be put into the game, or at least the possiblity of life, I want to fly to a desert planet and encounter giant sand worms, I want to see low medium and high tech civilizations on planets, while rare I want to see colonies on planets, currently if a player is offline I would love to see them at their base, I would also love to see a way to send signals into space from our bases. The point of these signals should be to encourage encounters with other players. I also want to see more done with freighters and frigates, like being able to add more inventory slots to the outside of our freighters, being able to upgrade our ships weapons on the freighters and being able to recruit people from the endless space stations we encounter for a fee to be able to work on our frigates and freighter. I also want to see the option to fly your frigates to other galaxies while you are on the frigate and from there command the frigate to do tasks on certain planets like going and mining certain ore for instance.
I would love 100% to see in the future a different enemy other then the sentinals, actual enemies you can fight against on different kinds of planets. I want the ability to capture creatures and put them into a zoo. In space or on planets, should be planets that they can survive on. Then of course sending out signals for others to come see. The point should also be to populate planets, maybe with clones? Idk anyways just some ideas as this comment gets lost in the comment section. If you do read this and like my ideas by all means please like the comment so others can see.

It's one thing for games to change during development but he was still talking about features that ended up missing within days of release. Closest he has ever gotten to addressing it directly, that I'm aware of, is him saying that they are bad at marketing, which is so close to being there, but then he comes to stage talking about toxicity while avoiding the reasons that led to that toxicity.
Not that getting death threats and harassment to extent that they did is not bad toxicity. Props for going through with the vision though.

Those interviews may have been uploaded close to launch, but filmed much earlier. One just doesn't know.
As for the game demo stuff, that is common practice. In fact it's rather stupid to not provide a failsafe stage presentation (especially for such a staggeringly complex game as NMS with so much room for error.)
But if you're right, and they knowingly lied about these features solely to attract more sales - as scummy as that would be, I think they learned their lesson as soon as the backlash and the death threats started coming in.

Imagine using 60 dollars on a game that isn't what you thought it was suppose to be. That sucks! I understand the anger and regret.
Now imagine somehow ignoring the fact that the gaming industry is the most anti-consumer/anti-worker industry, and the vast majority of marketing is fake or manipulative, yet there are multiple media outlets that can tell you of the experience, almost immediately, but your fomo has you throwing money left and right, maybe even a season pass too, 'cause God forbid you're not there playing day one, shouting on Twitter about a fucking video game.
To your surprise, you bought into enthusiastic drivel, and that really sucked, but now, in spite of how dumb your choice obviously was, you don't make it a lesson to learn from, but instead you try and not lose face, ny holding a grudge against one guy.
Imagine all of the above, yet the one guy you hate tries to make up for it, and somehow manages, and here we are, with your sorry ass unable to forgive, because you felt cheated, seeing as you have yet to understand how things work.
Here's a lesson for the slow ones out there: When someone tells you a product is the best ever, but the same person makes a living selling you this product, please, sit down and consider the salesman's logic here... Is he 1) doing you a favour? Or 2) trying to make a living?
    Sean Murray has done good.

FlapjaxAttack i watched the full video before commenting. sean never addresses the main problem head-on, which is that the gameplay elements he SAID would be included in multiple interviews, namely meetung/interacting with other players on your journey, were in fact not implemented. instead, he sidesteps the elephant in the riom and mentions sifting thru internet toxicity and marketing-related complaints to get to beneficial feedback from 'real players' for improvements to things like inventory UI. the core issue wasn't streamlining what was already in the game, it was about things that were promised but not delivered.
he had plenty of chances to curb people's hype BEFORE the launch and say, "we will implement these features, but they won't be available at launch. we're a small team and require more time to realize the full vision." he didn't. he could have addressed the complaints AFTER the launch, but he disappeared, which is why the people kept (somewhat unfairly) claiming that he took his money and ran.
i'm one of the people sean mentions in this video, the guy who played 100+ hours in the week after launch. i enjoyed it for what it was, but I'd be lying if i said i wasn't disappointed. i love the fact that they kept working on NMS to make it what it is today, a really solid game. but a little acknowledgement of playing his part in the hype machine and not being forthcoming about non-existent gameplay features would have saved him from the wavr of grief that came post-launch.
that's all people wanted: acknowledgement of his actions and disappearance

You can love NMS. I'm not saying you can't. It may very well be a good game now. They might have fixed the issues it had at launch but those issues should've never existed in the first place and only did because of disingenuous marketing. They've done good to try and fix past mistakes but let's be clear, that's all they've done. It's a little frustrating to see such them getting praise for something they were expected to do from the start. Now he's on stage characterizing the understandable backlash as "toxic" (death threats are never warranted) and framing it as some "adversity" they had to bravely overcome. It feels like another kick in the balls to those of us who still feel wronged. You can love em or hate em but I think both opinions are just as valid as the other.
    "Did you play the game?"
Is the first thing everyone defending NMS asks. I did at launch and the first update after. But when someone shits in your cornflakes and hands you the bowl with a smile it tends to make you not want to eat cornflakes anymore. Hello Games shit in my cornflakes. Sure they may have taken out the shit but it should've never been there in the first place. Still ain't eatin those cornflakes.

I'm not saying Murray is a saint person, but I think there is more into creating a huge game like this. The pressure and everything. Imagine being an amateur-ish developer, and one day receiving a contract by freaking Sony. I don't think he lied, he simply was afraid that Sony would kill him in case he would say something negative about the game. And most of all, he is not the only person working on the project, he is just the one representing it in the public, so if there is someone to blame it is most likely the greedy sales managers not the developers.
