People saw "No Man's Sky" in the title and disliked this video without even watching it. I watched this whole video, and I really enjoyed it as an artist. Really great talk about a procedural generation! Art in this game is really unique and very nice looking, and to think that this done by using procedural generation is insane!
LMHPoly Thank you! I mean, I saw some people constantly saying shit like "finish your game" or "Multiplayer would make the game good" on every one of Hello Games's tweets and asked some of them if they just follow HG to hate regardless of the actual tweet they reply too, literally all of them said yes one way or another.
I thought actual developers who want to learn are watching this channel, but the comment section looks like it's part of an IGN video or a Justin Bieber song.
Solidnypan People probably just searched "No Man's Sky", went on every video in the results that didn't directly hate on the games and proceeded to dislike and rage In the comments.
> Two year old video of technical presentation on art design in the game industy > Video is downvoted and comments filled with tired memes. The internet, everyone.
Love the art direction in NMS. Bravo Hello, I actually really liked NMS on release, i found it super relaxing. It’s excellent now after many updates, but even then i enjoyed playing it because it was calming.
"let's dislike a video before watching it based on our opinion about the game and not the actual video". No man's Sky had some gorgeous preproduction art. The game was arguably terrible (some people did enjoy it), but some of the art is amazing. It's not because the end product failed to deliver what it promised that all of the assets making it are bad. Genuine love in scifi culture and art was put in the art and music of this game, and whatever the end product might be, I will respect it for that.
Not arguing that, I just find it very dumb to mass dislike anything related to games you didn't like without even watching it entirely. It's a very good talk.
Don't blame this guy, he's the art director, and he did a fine job, blame Sean Murray and Sony. And if you bought the game and regret it, it's all on you for being a stupid consumer blinded by hype, no need to release your anger on the dislike bar or write an offensive comment that'll make you look like an idiot.
That is your subjective opinion. The game's assets are coherent, they all fit the same style/direction, and they fit the sci-fi genre, meaning the art director fulfilled his job adequately.
FaBFaB66 That's your subjective opinion. The game went for a pseudo retro style of '70s SF artists like Syd Mead and they made a millenial neon nightmare of ugly models, boring landscapes, tired scifi looks and overall bad solutions .
This guy sounds like he Googled some random words related to art and science fiction and strung them together. What does 'Millennial neon' even mean? And also buddy, you do realize the irony of telling someone else their subjective opinion is wrong, followed by stating your own subjective opinion as if it is the right one, don't you?
It does. They just added variety. You can still find planets that look like the launch planets, but the variety is just far greater, so you're less likely to run into them.
"there are no camels... that'd be false advertising" classic. shouldn't tease, it's a phenomenal achievement for such a small team. shame it didn't make for a phenomenal game on it's release too but at least they tried something different and ambitious and saw it through.
I knew the dislike ratio was going to be high but good talk. I'm planning on using procedural generation in a future project and I'll certainly apply some of these concepts. I'd like to see more experts from outside the industry like the Kingdom Come Deliverance devs did rather than just having artists google things though. The artist did a pretty good job but having an evolutionary biologist or geologist to consult could really speed things up and help create a believable world.
To infinity.. And Beyond! I can be Buzz Lightyear in this game or space pirates like Treasure Planet does, or Han Solo as Smuggler... or perhaps making my own elite squadron to assert dominance in so many system
Spliter No, I feel disabling comments is a sign of weakness, in a certain way. I usually really, really hate this phrase, because it's very often used by stupid 12-year-olds when they see criticism, but, you know, as they say, "haters gonna hate".
Liked the art but got really board of the game play and stopped playing because of board-om and it just had really annoying game mechanics example the inventory.
inventory management makes the game. Huge inventories are boring in my opinion. Modern games feel like they were designed for children anymore. They do almost everything for you.
WHY is the GDC posting a video from GDC2015 when it is 2017.. -> Anyone feel like funding the idea of this game ..but..done properly ? .. and delivered above expectation ? Find the $ and give me a call. ;)
Well, HG is doing that with the money the got from the launch- they added a ton of content and full multiplayer is coming along with new story and improved planets in July.

LMHPoly Amen.
LMHPoly I agree man. The art in No Man’s Sky is really good.
i know Im quite randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to stream newly released movies online ?
@Harvey Jacoby I would suggest Flixzone. You can find it on google =)
No Man's Sky has become amazing. They've created something really special that truly feels like a bit of "forever".

The internet, everyone.
its memes, dude. its a meme to hate no mans sky
The amount of time you spend on something doesn't give you the right to say you did it good
the art is one of the best things about no mans sky though. maybe that's damning by faint praise to most people but i love how the game looks.
Loved the 70's scifi vibe the aesthetic gave. One of the saving graces of that game.

Loth A isn't art subjective?
Not arguing that, I just find it very dumb to mass dislike anything related to games you didn't like without even watching it entirely. It's a very good talk.
Loth A making a few assumptions there aren't we? Maybe people didn't enjoy the talk
half the dislikes were there less than 1 hour after it was released. it's fair to guess most of them didn't watch it.
Loth A probably because they didn't enjoy the talk
Say what you want about the problems with the rest of the game, but the art direction, sound design, soundtrack, and UI were all beautiful.
Proof that a game is more than the sum of its parts, or in this case, less.
The UI was horrible, but I'm with you on the rest.
svelle The UX of the UI was horrible. Aesthetically though, the UI was pleasing though, which was what I was referring to.
Phillip Forrest pre release art direction
Diego Antonio Rosario Palomino ?
its been 25 minutes and it feels like 2 hours! man this presentation is good!!! :)
Also the game is amazing now.
Still looks quite good to me.
Oh, he managed to finish the presentation, I'm amazed.
Dragos442 this was back in 2015
Al least they finished something, even if it was not the game.
Don't blame this guy, he's the art director, and he did a fine job, blame Sean Murray and Sony. FaBFaB66 The game looks like shit.
That is your subjective opinion. The game's assets are coherent, they all fit the same style/direction, and they fit the sci-fi genre, meaning the art director fulfilled his job adequately.
exactly.

Nice! -- The first 5 minutes already introduced artists I haven't been aware of. Good stuff!
Always good to get some new references/leads.
Man if only current nms looked like this
It does. They just added variety. You can still find planets that look like the launch planets, but the variety is just far greater, so you're less likely to run into them.
@@ossiehalvorson7702 it absolutely does not look like this at all.
Post here if you're actually going to watch the whole thing.
Robert Neville many already have , this was posted years ago
Well that's the point of the video isn't it?
"there are no camels... that'd be false advertising" classic. shouldn't tease, it's a phenomenal achievement for such a small team. shame it didn't make for a phenomenal game on it's release too but at least they tried something different and ambitious and saw it through.
Ambitious? Maybe. Different? No. Phenomenal achievement? No, by a long shot.
A wonderful sermon. And so true about the post-apocalyptic nature so oft found in sci-fi. Nothing more depressing than hope turned into ashes.
It inspire me what the epic si-fi space exploration really is!
I knew the dislike ratio was going to be high but good talk. I'm planning on using procedural generation in a future project and I'll certainly apply some of these concepts. "The game is not finished"
This guy should have done PR, that phrase was all we needed to know.
This is a 2015 talk, fyi.
Robert Neville yeah I know, that's why I said that.
"It's just filled with questions." Love that.
Fpr everyone who had his hopes up for NMS and likes the Art style I recommend trying out Astroneer!
"no camels... that's false advertising" made me laugh
To infinity.. And Beyond!
I can be Buzz Lightyear in this game or space pirates like Treasure Planet does, or Han Solo as Smuggler... or perhaps making my own elite squadron to assert dominance in so many system
This new Freighter updates is so amazing! I can't wait to see another updates because the possibility of this game is so vast!
GDC folk. I think it's best if you just disable the comment section and the ratings on this vid, nothing good will come out of this.
Spliter No, I feel disabling comments is a sign of weakness, in a certain way. I usually really, really hate this phrase, because it's very often used by stupid 12-year-olds when they see criticism, but, you know, as they say, "haters gonna hate".
I think it's best if you delete the vídeo lol
How about you go fuck yourself instead?
who even disliked this? it's awesome!
Thanks for sharing. Lots of useful technical details.
This is just to good.
It's nice to see GDC conducting a postmortem so quickly:)
Brian Decker postmortem ?
Never forget. Never Again.
Hmm... so the next update will be called Empire?
Funny, but the update that they're going to release in July is called "NEXT"
really nice talk, ignore the down votes and give it a look :)
I wonder what are his thoughts on the released game.
Wow it's like a COD trailer up in here amirite?
#bringbackNMS
This game needed 2 more years of development
Its still being worked on... When sony pushed it out the door is kinda irrelevant unless they stop working on the game. Which they have yet to do.
this comment aged like wine
He sure does like to reference Bioware.
The dislikes !..LOL
A few years later - what dislikes?
TH-cam has removed the dislike display in the name of toxic corporate positivity.
i expected the comments to be terrible.
expectations met.
resisting urge to fire shots at NMS.
salt incoming
Such a pity they veered away from their original art style. Today's style is horrible and devoid of life.
But can he see other people or is he just talking to himself?
Stevepunk there was a public
Liked the art but got really board of the game play and stopped playing because of board-om and it just had really annoying game mechanics example the inventory.

trolling no man's sky is cool.... it's what all the cool kids do....
Is this guy serious?
Tsukuyomi Kai does it look to you like he's doing stand up comedy

Well, HG is doing that with the money the got from the launch- they added a ton of content and full multiplayer is coming along with new story and improved planets in July.
so.... they just copied Chris Foss and John Harris's artwork, pretty original! Otherwise I don't mind the game, actually enjoy it.
It's called "inspiration".
so much was wrong with this 'game'
