Planting A Rose In Less Sunlight

    I've been a successful rose grower all my life. You can plant many roses in shady areas and sometimes they will survive a few years but will have a reduced number or no blooms at all. However, even a couple hours of sunlight (full, not dappled) will be enough for most roses to survive and bloom. They might not be the biggest or showiest, but they will still be beautiful. It's a myth that roses need sunlight all day but it's also true they do their best when they consistently get four or more hours of it daily.

    I planted the Golden Showers on my east facing wall (my balcony faces north) it seems to be happy. Blooms last longer too and it’s growing. I’m glad you confirmed that they like morning sun.

    I recently bought William Baffin an apparently hardy(zone2 Canada), vigorous monstrous shrub rose that is well suited to grow as a climber. This is my first year planting roses. I have been waltzing around with the potted rose for a week now not knowing where to put it...convinced I had made an impulse buy & chosen the wrong rose. Not anymore thanks to your video(s)! This video & the one on pegging have eased my concerns about light conditions & overall size issues. Thank You.

      Hi! I'm an amateur to any kind of gardening. I live in Seattle,WA. I have planted a few rose plants this summer, namely Alec's Red, Fragrant Cloud, Voodoo, Good as Gold, Bonica and Zephirine Drouhin in my front yard which gets afternoon Sun from after 1.30 on wards till sundown. All of them are own root plants and have been planted in organic soil +compost+bone dust meal. They are healthy plants and though very small in size have grown good foliage and also a few buds. But I'm a bit worried after seeing this video if I should leave them where they are or should I plant them in my backyard which gets sunlight from morning to almost 4 pm in the summer. Your suggestion will be very valuable to me. Thank you.

    I planted a rose last night and its in shock! I put root stimulator, liek always but had rinsed some of the tight clay off its roots when I took it out of it bucket it came in. What can I do for it? I have never seen any of my roses act this way..2 to 3 inches of new growth are drooped over! :'( It was over cast and only 86 today!I live in Kansas so it wasn''t bad, but mild today and the rose is used to being in my back yard. You should try living in the desert. Roses do fine here without morning sun. Mine all have 6 to 12" of growth and buds covering them already. They actually still get scalded with just a few hours during the hottest part of the summer. Although I would not be surprised if they would do the best with morning sun only. I love all your videos btw!!

    In our northwest facing 2 story home with one garden in front, I achieve excellent results with my hybrid teas in morning shade at one end of the front garden. Many of them get an hour or two early morning before the sun gets up behind our Bald Cypress and then the house for a few more hours until the sun comes around the house and they get full afternoon sun the rest of the day In fact, they are more proliferous than the ones at the other end of the garden that receive full sun sunrise to sunset. How is is you have such bad luck without morning sun?

  • @Whiplash596
    @Whiplash596 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    So disappointed i didn't see this video when I bought my roses last year! I have one hybrid tea rose that only gets morning sun part of the year. When my neighbor's leaves bloom closer to the summer it will get less sun. I'll see how it goes this summer and may move it in the fall! Thanks!!!!

  • @Paulzimmermanroses
    @Paulzimmermanroses  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Likely it was rinsing off the soil that did it. Cut off all the new growth and in fact pull all the leaves. This will reduce the pressure on what roots are left to feed the plant. It should recover just fine.

    Light needs are only one half of the larger problem here... Planting a small, shallow rooted shrub under large shade trees in a futile effort, due to the fact that trees take up and respirate hundreds of gallons of water a day, drying out the soil very quickly. You'll be wasting a lot of water keeping that rose alive... Not to mention the Ph problems that are encountered!

      In Sydney 8 9 foot every time branches everywhere 6ft across by early summer to early winter late autumn
      Show stoppers many times entered into Competitions by bypassers.
      Branches here are spindly, the flowers undeveloped.
      I grew many varieties successfully.
      But I'm talking secifically 'autumn beauty'
      ?
      Long hot days in Sydney, is it, the longer the day, the bigger they grow, they grow better in England than here, or Russia?

    Only 86." Generally: Transplant in cool weather, for better results. 60 degrees is really nice. Like spring and fall, not summer. Wait till next year for flowers, you probably will not get too many. Your roses should look better now, if not, you will have to wait to next year. Too hot! Start cutting the dead growth off slowly. Clean dead leaves and keep moist. Do not over water.
