- If you have shade in your garden, you may wonder if there's enough sun to grow roses. Fear not! There are quite a few varieties you can choose that will accept a fair amount of shade. Here I'll review some of those classes of roses that are best for shady spots, and also discuss why a bit of high/dappled or afternoon shade might actually help you roses.

I am growing a single white rose with a pink blush called Lyda Rose in almost complete shade. It is about 5'-6' tall and disease free in my zone 10b garden.
Thanks Bill. 10b is quite a bit warmer than here, and I know I've heard from loads of rose gardeners who say shade is beneficial (if not critical) in warmer climates. Thanks for your input.

@@tiq6877 Yes, it does. The first flush of spring is the biggest then a couple smaller flushes later in the year.
I'm in 9a in Bristol, UK. Do you think one would survive in complete shade here? It would be in a south facing garden, which has full sun all day, just behind a wall, I don't know if that makes a slight difference in my favour or not.

I’m so happy I came across your channel. Such great information. I have a lot of tall oak trees and while I’m grateful for the shade it also makes growing roses a challenge. This is exactly what I have been looking for. My hope is over the moon and back now!😀😀 I live in Great Lakes area zone 5 and this is immensely helpful.. I have been growing a 4ft. rose in a pot and overwinter it in my garden shed which is working well, but Now I’m thinking I can actually put one or two in the ground somewhere now. Thank you.

My Gloria de L’Jion or Old Glory is a Noisette rose which.blooms in part shade. It gets morning sun. Lovely apricot clusters of fragrant flowers.

As a gardener in Zone 8, I have found that most roses thrive in dappled sunlight. I love the musk roses! Thanks for recommending these beauties!
We also garden in Zone 8. I’d agree dappled shade is best for my hybrid tea and my miniature roses.
@@botanicaltreasures2408 - Good to know! I am also in Zone 8 and as you know summers are brutal. I just purchased some tea roses.... One of the possible spots gets half a day of sun. Hopefully this will work out.
I have some miniature roses still flowering and have buds, looking perfect. One is in shady place.
Also cover roses 2 types [Kent and Alexander von Humboldt]. It is second part of December. We had some frosts. Zone 7b.

Yes to Ballerina! I am growing 3, surrounded by geraniums, on the north side of my yard under the shade of a sour cherry tree. They are over 5 feet tall and are incredibly recurrent and bloom into the fall.
Another is the hybrid musk climber Guerlande d'amour. Another that blooms like mad in almost full shade.

I'm having good luck growing Cl. Cecile Brunner and Cl..Zephirine Drouhin in pretty deep shade...only 4 hours or so of morning sun.

I have Cl. Cecile Brunner in shade to. It must get a little sun when it’s directly overhead. It’s been munched by goats and keeps on going. No care for decades. I’ve made 3 beautiful plants from it. The one I kept for myself I have in full sun to see how it goes.

I was concerned about my 3 year old rose bush not being able to thrive in the atmosphere I put it in, but now I have complete confidence the location won't kill it. She's in shade most hours of the day but gets morning light to about 11ish. She's been blooming since I got her a few weeks ago. Deadheading seems to do her well.

I have a patio that gets sunlight all day but it has a shading net over it. I’ll give it a try and see if my roses can handle the dappled sunlight!

Hello! I love your channel btw! Also, I have an established rose bush in a slightly shady area. Zone 8b. Florida. It does well but I feel it would benefit from being in a slightly sunnier spot. It was placed on the spot it's in, by someone else when I did not know as much about roses. Is it ok to move a several year old rosh bush? If so, when would you suggest moving it? It's not flowering now and seems slightly dormant in it's behavior currently but it's still very hot here and winter won't be coming untill dec. / jan. I want it to do well in spring which for me starts the beginning of March. All my other roses are thriving where they are but they are different types, and I want this one to thrive also. It's my favorite one. I think it's a china tea rose- small clustering light pink roses. Thank you!! Your my favorite person for plants, propagating and rose tips! ♥️
Thanks Rachael. I think in your climate, I'd aim for early December, when the move will be less stressful, and there's still time to recover before your desired blooming season.
Hi Jason. I live in Sydney Australia. I love your channel. I like your explanations of growing roses much more than other channels about roses on TH-cam.
Sydney Australia is a temperate climate. The internet search says it is equivalent to zone 10. But I have been to Florida and I don't think it is like Sydney . Florida would be more like Queensland which is more subtropical. Sydney would be more like a zone 8 . But anyway my question is I have a kiss me Kate rose climber ,Kordes to plant. I would like to plant it North/West side wall of my house. During the summer it gets hot with lots of sun for 5 to 6 hours and bright no direct sun for the late afternoon. I think summer should be fine as I have a meyer lemon tree on that side and have grown tomatoes , capsicum with no problems. My only concern with this rose climber plant is that in late autumn it starts to get less sun and in winter mainly the month of June and July that area of the house barely gets 2 to 3 hours of sun on the soil there. Now this would be the time the rose would be dormant so I'm hoping that the sun amount would not matter like it does when it starts to break it's dormancy in August the end of winter in Australia. I have noticed there is a 1 hour longer of sun on the soil area now in August and will start to increase each month from now. I'm guessing in 3 years time the rose climber will have grown height about 2.5 metres bonus that there is always sun hitting up higher on that wall year round.
Now with this information I have given you, do you think the rose climber will be able to bloom with no problems? Will it be ok in winter? Winter is my main concern because like I said 2 hours of sun hitting soil level max. Look forward to your reply. Thank you Kindly. Patricia
Thanks Patricia - that site sounds good. I wouldn't worry about a lack of sunlight in the cooler (dormant or semi-dormant) season. I know that in colder winter climates, some rose growers even move their potted roses into unheated, unlit garages to overwinter. I LOVE that your rose will get some shade protection from the hottest of the afternoon sun during the summer months.

I got both a baby Veilchenblau and a Gislaine de Feligonde from you this spring. So happy to see them as mature plants. May I ask how many years they take before they get a good size. I am patient, just curious and also calculating how much fence to give them.
2 to 3 years before they really demand some space
Another great video. Jason, I'm curious to know why you classify Sally Homes as a hybrid musk as opposed to modern shrub .
The classes are bound to be a little mixed up by now. I went with Hybrid Musk because it's the offspring of Ballerina and shares some of the graceful characteristics of the class. Of course, you could go with modern shrub as well - which is a broad enough catch-all to throw all the blended near-species roses (like the Ag Canada bred hardy roses), David Austin's breeding program, and basically anything that you wouldn't feel comfortable slotting in somewhere else.

Have just purchased two Weigela Monet for a small front garden which does not get alot
of sun, and not sure as how tall it will grow .
Information on those was not given . Not sure when to even feed.

Google is very helpful on that. Find an online nursery that sells the plant you have and they will have care instructions and height info there.

I live in an apartment with a good size balcony. We get good light, yes but zero direct sunlight. I tried growing many varieties of flowering plants but no luck. Could you please suggest me any kind of roses that can be grown?
One thing I learned about balconies is that they can be very windy. This dries plants out and kills them. The roots can’t take up enough water to compensate for the dry air movement. I don’t know If that’s your case but something to consider. Planting in the largest container possible so the dirt is there to protect the plant from the dry air might help a bit. I was in San Francisco and it was hours of wind every afternoon. Nothing could thrive there. Also it was a fire escape so no protection from the bottom.
What was the name of the pink rose at the end of your video please? Is is Pierre de Ronsard? (Eden) You described our shady situation with tall trees with small leaves! So I’m going to give it a go! Thank you

Great video! I would like to plant my roses on the north side of the glass greenhouse. They will get some morning sun, then the whole day sun but through the sidding of the greenhouse (in summer there will be plants of course, that will shade as well). I´m affraid, it will not be enough... Zone 7bish, central Europe. Should I find some other location? Thank for any advice! :)
Sounds like a pretty good location actually - I'd give it a try there and see how it performs.
Hi Jason! I am so glad that I found your video and that you take the time to answer each viewer's questions! Thank you very much! Anyways, here is my situation. I live in Toronto, Ontario Canada: Depending where one lives in the city, my zone can range from zone 5 to zone 6b. As are winters can sometimes be severe, I will assume that I live in zone 5. I am hoping to find a climbing rose that will grow up a garage wall and which is facing east: the climbing rose will be grown against this wall in a raised flower bed. I would like to plant a climbing rose that gets exactly 4 hours of morning sun (from 8 am to 12 pm). Can you recommend some climbing roses that you have grown that will flourish in this type of environment and more importantly is disease resistant? I've cleared the area and am hoping to find a climbing rose this week so that it has time to establish over the summer months.

I've planted a blue girl and a Heritage at my front yard. There's no shade at all. They are not doing well the first year. Only a couple of flowers. The roses I planted at my back yard are doing great. It's cooler, better humidity and some shade from trees are present. I think roses are like other plants, prefer a comfortable condition.
Thanks for sharing your experience - and a comfortable spot with consistent moisture is especially important during establishment of a new rose.
Another great video. I get early sun until about 12:30-1pm so I'm hoping I will be able to grow most varieties in the spot I have 'dogeared' for roses for next spring. Now to take the sand out of the bed and replace with decent soil!!! I must ask you which rose variety you were standing in front of at the end of this video. I like it very much! I’m in Delhi (India) with tropical climate. My verandah gets about 4 hours of direct sun after 12 noon - do you think it’s too ambitious of me to try growing HT variety?
I’ve got a few and am giving it a full shot as I’m really very keen. Have been watching TH-cam videos a lot and found yours to be the most beneficial.
Please advise me whether I should use grow lamps to accentuate & hasten the growth and if so whether I can order it thru Amazon. I’m a new subscriber to your channel

Thanks. Your climate is quite different, but I wouldn't hesitate to try a HT with 4 hours direct sun if it's in a reasonably bright location the rest of the day.

It's Eden - and no, it pretty much needs a full day of sun for its large, heavy blooms.

Will adding grow lights to a relatively shady balcony help with growing roses? It gets part shade dappled light under a tree and the grow lights will be a supplement since the grow lights will be used alongside natural sunlight.
The answer is yes. Growers add supplemental light to greenhouses all the time to create optimum growing conditions. The question becomes more of practicality - is it worth the cost of hardware and electricity to try to overcome the natural conditions?

These “shade tolerant” roses look a lot like cluster roses I’ve seen growing near our home on the New Jersey Atlantic coast.
Will this type of Shade Rose also do well & thrive if one’s garden is directly on the salty Atlantic coast? At least at that home unlike the city, we have ample garden space. But we can’t seem to grow flowering plants & Roses that are salt & wind intolerant. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Hey Jason - I am in zone 7b, and growing hybrid teas on my balcony. The balcony is East facing, and the roses get morning sun until about 12:45pm (maybe a TAD under 6 -> maybe 6.5 hours) - it is still very much light after the sun moves toward the south facing part of my balcony, but they are not in direct sunlight thereafter. In terms of heat/temp, I guess this is for the best as it gets REALLY hot in the summer from 11-12pm and on. Is this acceptable for my hybrid teas? Could I supplement a grow light to give them maybe an extra 1-3 hours after the sun has passed?
Hi Matthew, not bad at all. I wouldn't assume you need supplemental light unless they're seriously underperforming (lacking vigorous growth or flowering)
We have a corner of our house that faces the west. It gets plenty of sun in the afternoon, but all shade in the mornings. I would love to plant some roses there. I’m nervous because I’ve never planted roses before. Would that spot be okay to try?
Hi Elizabeth - it's not ideal, but who gets to plant everything in exactly the right spot? Afternoon sun can be quite hot, so do what you can to provide consistent moisture. An organic mulch would be helpful for that.

I've done okay with La Sevillana, though it doesn't bloom as heavily in part shade as in a sunny spot.

It's worth a try if the shade isn't too deep
Can we use solar light if we have lack of sunlight or led is better option
It's pretty difficult to supplement with enough light for outdoor applications, but LED is the most efficient way to go.
Can we grow damask rose in shade with just 3 hours of east balcony morning sunlight ?
The damasks require a fair amount of sun for strong flowering. I'd probably aim for something a little more shade-tolerant.
I live in a zone 4b-5a, should I plant on the south-southwest side of my house or is the east side ok?

Hey Jason, I have an east facing screened in porch on my house and I want to plant some climbing roses around the door. This wall gets great sun from 730-1200. Could I plant Golden Showers and Joseph’s Coat there? I can’t hardly find shade tolerate climbing roses online that will ship soon.
Hi Jacob. I've grown Golden Showers with fair success in a semi-shaded location. Others may have different experience, but I can't recommend Joseph's Coat. Beautiful colors, but mine always struggled badly with blackspot.
You mentioned Bind Weed or Morning Glory ugh - How do you deal with it - Do you have quick fix that is not dangerous
Not really. It's a tough one to beat. Along the fence line, I've been doing my best to clear any obstacles to mowing, so that the bindweed is just cut down with the grass and doesn't get much opportunity to collect energy. Likewise, I've skirted a few of my trees where the bindweed was grabbing the lower branches for support. In the garden, it's been hand weeding, but that's a tough fight.
Grab it at the base and pull it out. Practice being present in your life and your environment. This practice will help you to notice the weed when it is small and easiest to remove.
Hi Jason, I recently planted an eden rose climber up against the column on my front porch which gets only 3 hours of direct sunlight from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Is there any chance that it will produce bloom well? I'm in zone 10a. Thanks.
Hi Jenny. On the face of it, 3 hours seems like too little light for good flower production. It may depend a bit on how "shady" your shade is - if the 3 hours is supplemented by dappled shade and an otherwise bright position, that may make a difference.
It's a very bright spot all day long plus the 3 hours direct sun. It faces south but the sunlight got obstructed by the house structure from next door neighbor. I know it's a slim chance but love this eden rose so much so i'm holding out hope. thanks for reply!

If you are still in need of a supplier, I've had wonderful luck with Roses Unlimited in South Carolina (though their website is not great for ordering) and Chamblees Roses in Texas.

What roses are good for rose hips?
Hi Kathleen. The rugosa roses in particular have large ornamental and edible hips. The varieties 'Scabrosa' and 'Fru Dagmar Hastrup' are well know for large flowers and hips.

Depends on where you are. There are loads of mail order and local nurseries in the US, but less so in other regions I'm told.
