★★ How many terracotta warriors are there?
    ------------------------------
    8,000
There Are 8,000 Known Terracotta Warriors. But Archaeologists in China Just Found More Than 200 Others. The discovery helps paint a clearer picture of how the Chinese military once operated.
    ------------------------------
★★ Why were the terracotta warriors made?
    ------------------------------
The Terracotta Army was built by the subjects of Qin Shi Huang, First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty and China's 2,133-year imperial era.
The role of the Terracotta Army was to "guard" the entire mausoleum and Qin Shi Huang believed that the army could protect him in the afterlife.
    ------------------------------
★★ What is unique about the Terracotta Warriors?
    ------------------------------
    Each Terracotta Warrior is unique.
Their features are lifelike, made from moulds.
Archaeologists believe they were built in an assembly line fashion, with moulds for arms, legs, torsos, and heads being put together and finished with customized features that ensured no two were alike.
    ------------------------------
★★ What are the Terracotta Warriors made of?
    ------------------------------
    Yellow Earth.
Experts have confirmed that the material used to mold the terracotta warriors and horses is a "yellow earth" sourced from around the burial sites.
Yellow earth is easy to obtain, and was an appropriate material due to its adhesive quality and plasticity.
    ------------------------------
★★ Is the terracotta army real?
    ------------------------------
The warriors are amazingly lifelike and it feels as if they could simply wake up and start marching along as they did over two thousand years ago.
Built by Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China, this underground army lay undiscovered for over 2200 years.
    ------------------------------
★★ Can you buy a real terracotta warrior?
    ------------------------------
No any person or country can buy a authentic Terracotta Warrior, but they can buy as many Terracotta Warriors statues replicas for sale as they want.
The Terracotta Warrior figures can be found in many tourist souvenir shops in Xian.
    ------------------------------
★★ Are there bodies in the Terracotta Army?
    ------------------------------
Discovered by farmers while digging for a well, the Terracotta Warriors lay dormant for more than 2,000 years before excavations began over thirty years ago.
The sheer scale of the army is a marvel: it consists of more than 8,000 figures simply buried in the ground and abandoned.
    ------------------------------
★★ How much is a terracotta soldier worth?
    ------------------------------
The terracotta warrior is estimated to be worth US$4.5 million, according to the FBI.
    ------------------------------
★★ What makes the terracotta army so special?
    ------------------------------
The army of life-size terra cotta soldiers, archers, horses and chariots was stationed in military formation near Emperor Qin's tomb in order to protect the emperor in the afterlife.
As a result, each terra cotta soldier appears to be unique in its facial features, revealing a high level of craftsmanship and artistry.
    ------------------------------
★★ Why does the terracotta army face east?
    ------------------------------
Why? All the pottery warriors are facing east.
According to historical records, the original ruling area of Qin was in the west and the other states were in the east.
Qin Shi Huang always planned to unify all states, so the soldiers and horses facing east might confirm his determination for unification.
    ------------------------------
★★ Is clay and terracotta the same thing?
    ------------------------------
The difference between clay and terra-cotta is that clay is the raw material, while terra-cotta is clay that is already modeled and fired.
Typically, terra-cotta objects may be made of any types of organic clay, but earthenware clay has the brown-orange color that is also known as terra-cotta.

Boy, this place has really changed over the years. I first went to Xian in 1985 with my mother and stayed at the Golden flower hotel. It was my first trip to China and I loved it even though back then the roads were bumpy and the food was not the best. I thought the women in Xian were very beautiful. The Terracotta Warriors were just discovered one decade earlier by farmers. The museum was just one building covering a dug out in the ground with a few soldiers but it was very impressive. To think that if it weren't for a farmer digging in the area, the Terracotta Warriors would still be a secret to the world. I wonder if that farmer is still alive? Have a great time. Max, thanks again. I have not visited Xian since 1985 but I would like to go back and ride a bike on the city walls and witness the transformation of this once dusty and poor city to a great modern metropolis.

      Oh, what a great sharing!
Your 1985's visiting was so impressive, my dear friend.
The Terracotta Warriors were discovered in 1974 and keeping in discovering job for decades, and yes, it has a huge difference with 1985's museum. I can totally imagine how poor and simple that museum was in 1985.
The farmer who discovered the Terracotta Warriors is called Yang Zhifa. Mr. Yang is a great man.
President Clinton ever awarded Mr.Yang USD 3M for discovering this wonder, and Mr.Yang donated all these money to poor people.
Hope you could visit Xi'an again after 36 years, and that would be awesome!

The most astonishing fact was that each terra cotta warrior was an exact replica of its corresponding human subject. Face, body size, abnormalities; the detail and sheer magnitude of these sculptures represent a monumental social effort. Basically, an army of sculptors was created to pull off this miracle of logistics and art ... because it was art in its truest sense.

My Terracotta warrior is looking at me right now, we brought him home all the way from Xian in 1997..it’s crazy to think that all the pits have yet to be opened, I also wonder if they will be brave enough to open the Emperor’s tomb one day.

Qin's crossbow is the most advanced weapon at that time. Its shooting range at 800 meters is double that of modern AK47 rifle. It is so deadly.

    • @WalkEast

    • @franktrinidad142
      @franktrinidad142 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

But it wasn't deadly at all at this distance.
i personally think the Chu Ko Nu was more deadly used on mass in big war.

    • @angusyoung1448
      @angusyoung1448 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@franktrinidad142 Yes, effective range is typical less than the maximum range. Chu Ko Nu is repeating crossbow that was invented few hundred years later than Qin's crossbow. It's effective range is much shorter for obvious reasons. Qin does have another deadly weapon called crossbow array but it is not as portable as Chu Ko Nu.

    • @edukid1984
      @edukid1984 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Err... it's good to be proud of our heritage but wild exaggeration as claimed by some random online articles should be dismissed since they harm your credibility. AK47's maximum range (not effective range) is much larger than 400m. Qin's handheld crossbow, even when operated by the strongest soldiers, cannot hope to reach more than 300m in maximum range and likely far less than that in terms of effective kill range (probably less than 100m). The power of modern gunpowder and metallurgy is not something muscle and primitive technology could ever hope to match.

    • @tr1bes
      @tr1bes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@edukid1984 if you look at the history of Qin Empire on military aspect, they were either train to be in the military or be a peasant farmer. Even as a peasant, they serve mass produce food for the entire Qin Empire. In the military, there are 2 positions a novice soldier can take. Bowman and or soldier with a Ji (halberd like spear). The calvary are mostly for highly train military personnel. The only military that can compete with the Qin is their nemesis, the Chu.
To me, the Greek and Roman would be devastated to meet the Qin army in the battlefield. The Ji would highly wipe them out as it can sweep the vulnerable legs of the Greek/Roman soldier. Plus with the repeating crossbow, they will smash through.

I heard the guide nearby mention that there were not enough archeologists, which is probably because Xi 'an was the capital of some of the most powerful dynasties in Chinese history, such as Qin, Han and Tang. It is reported that Xi 'an is only building a metro line 8, which has not been completed yet, because tombs of over 3,000 different dynasties have been found. I think it needs a lot of archaeologists

The first Emperor Qin Shi Huang tomb itself & others pits have not been excavated yet. Now we see Terracotta Warriors all look like rock statues, but in reality they were full of colours. When they were exposed to air during the dig, the paint dropped off.
Imagine how great they were with full colours in formation guarding the tomb of the first Emperor.
That is also why China stop the excavation until they could find a better way to protect the relics.

Very nice video, a lot of work to put on TH-cam, thank you! It seems there are very few people, maybe it is a week day and all are at work. It is a fascinating place. I wonder why I don't see any handicapped people touring too, or elderly people. It would take many days to study all the very nice displays! I wish I could go there, but I think it is very expensive to travel in China. It is so disturbing the many military bases the US has surrounding China. We very much need world peace.

An amazing find to say the least, someone else found it too 13:53 looking at the burial pit if that’s what it is on the right side of screen but didn’t realise what they was burying their I assume family member amongst, digging that out they must have come across parts of the warriors and we’re probably like who the flip left all this stuff down here 😂
Where they made outside and painted then carried or wheeled down into the crypt or tomb and put into place ? The terracotta warriors is something I don’t know much about but imagine the vast amount of sculptors, painters, artisans needed to make all this 🤔🤯 yeah mind blowing scale of operation.
41:44 then big old pots of whine looking like that reminded me of the old Drunken Master 2 posters 😂 Jackie Chan standing in the Drunken Fist stance wearing the traditional garb with them pots behind him.
As always, thank you for sharing mate 👊

Estimated 700,000 people involved in this tomb project.
