some scholars believe the terracotta warriors was built for 宣太后 by his son. 宣太后 is great grandma of 秦始皇(the first emperor). she is the first woman in Chinese history to use the title "太后"(a title for emperor's mother). there's a Chinese tv drama called 芈月传 tells about her story.
The lady once told a diplomat that when her husband the former emperor laid his leg on her, it’s heavy. But when he laid on top of her, she enjoyed it....lol....
The terracotta warrior site is only a part of the entire mausoleum system, which mimicked the entire central government under the compound. There are still new discoveries from time to time.
What an impressive sight these terra cotta warriors. Especially if you imagine they were built over 2000 years ago by the first emperor of unified China. The craftmanship that went into this army is unbelievable. The coolest thing is that there are still so many new things being discovered every day. They haven't even been in the tomb of the emperor of which it is thought that there are treasures as well as prototypes of palaces etc. In the coming years and decennia, the site will probably become much bigger. This is really a top see sights if you come to china in 2019
And there are said to be traps inside the emperor's tomb as well! Scientists haven't gone in there yet but they did send in some robots or probes, which detected mercury levels which were dozens of times higher than the normal range. The emperor was pretty serious about securing his tomb, it seems. Maybe they should send in Indiana Jones? 🤠
@@再續前緣-z2c To translate, deeper excavations have ceased due to oxidation of the artefacts (permanent damages). Today's excavations are merely concentrated on less important sites. When technology is advanced enough to preserve the unearthed artefacts, then time will come to excavate Qin Shi Huang's tomb.
In China, old people usually go to do some exercises either early in the morning or late in the evening in squares or parks. Everyone is welcomed to join them.
It’s been over 13 years I went to see the exhibit. Surely the facilities have been improved. We hired a tour guide to enjoy details at a higher level. Pit 2 shows how the archeologists found the tombs, caved in and statues covered in dirt. The city offers more places to see as well. Lovely country and people.
Their enimies even didn't have chance to look clearly at their face. More than 2200 years ago, Qin Army attacked from long distance, for The crossbow were their main weapon.
Pit 2 actually present the details of how the army are being structured when preparing for war. I rented the audio guide while I was there and the introduction given was extremely detailed, even explained what those "grooves" in the pit are for. It was pretty educational and gave an insight on the intelligence of the ancient people. 😊 Actually I personally recommend to start with pit 1 as it displays how the place was discovered by a farmer and you can see a full array of the armies. Then move on to pit 2 and 3 for the more detailed explanation of why the armies are arranged in that manner. At least that works better for me. My 2 cents worth. 😁 P/s: I loveeeee your videos. Looking forward to new videos soon. 💖
Hi Christine! Thank you for the info, I wonder were there actual warriors in pit 2 then when you visited? 😊 aside from a few broken ones I mean? So cool to hear you are enjoying our videos, thank you for watching 😘👌🏻
@@NaickKim I remember there were more than when you were there. I guess the ongoing excavation work means that it's always changing. But I feel that pit 2 is more on the formation of the warriors based on ancient Chinese military strategy.

Yes it's amazing to think they were all beautifully painted. I read indeed that there still is sooo much to excavate in the area. It would be impressive if they could reconstruct the full terracotta army. Have you been to the mausoleum itself?
You should never miss the night view of The Great Tang All DAY MALL(actually it is a steet) in Xi An, the night view is the best, also the night view of Lotus palace of Tang Dynasty in Xi An. I hope to go there some day, but I imagine it is very expensive to travel in China and probably will never be able to go there. To me this tomb and the warriors reveal a mystery of the human condition as to when the mind-set changed away from symbols actually being regarded as living beings. Now it is all seen as fiction, but then very intelligent people believed clay figures would somehow become actual warriors of protection. Now they are all a curiosity, a subject of awe over the creation of such an elaborate tomb.
Depends on what you call expensive of course, but we traveled China on approx 60eur per day for two people and you could definitely do cheaper if needed. We don't travel very fast so that keeps costs lower. Lodging outside of Beijing is quite affordable and you can find nice rooms between 10-20 euro per night or sleep in a dorm for very cheap. We paid 9.5 eur per night for a double room in Xi'an for example. Food can be had cheaply at 1-3 usd per meal. It is an incredible country to visit and this site should be very high up on anyone's bucket list.
Every time I see any of this it brings to mind a ton of questions as to the artist that create these figure the skill to mix the clay to consistency achieve minimum shrinking cracking and knowing this is all done by hand it makes you thirst for more
The craziest thing is that when these statues more than two thousand years ago were dug out, they still kept their bright colors, but it was a pity that they faded after being exposed to the air.
The original Terracotta warriors were colorful ,with decorated surfaces from different metal ingredients. Unfortunately those ingredients were easily oxygenated after almost 2 thousand years' burial under the caves. It is why they are grey as u see,the digging work of left caves was stopped as well.More advanced preserve tech is in need until digging work restart.

Haha, Xi'an is my hometown. You may just follow the advice of the tour guide to play. There are still many interesting and beautiful places you have never been to. If you come to Xi'an next time, I will take you there
I've been there last a few days ago. Wanda Plaza Shopping Mall of Xian was in front of my hotel and I used the big supermarket on the basement of the shopping center. I went to Terracotta on Sunday morning and it was just like that of the video. I think Xian is overrated and over-popular. Admission fees in Xian were costly. China needs to improve their tourism environment to distribute people more evenly to throughout China. I found Luoyang more satisfying than Xian for less crowds and lower prices. Many other Chinese cities must be nice also. I live in a big city so I want smaller cities to enjoy traveling.
We did enjoy Xian though. Especially the food is incredible. You're right about the crowds, but China has a population of 1.4 billion people, so plenty of people haha. Thanks for the tip on Luoyang.
Qin = name of the dynasty Shi = first Huangdi = ruler/emperor Qin Shi Huangdi =the first emperor of Qin dynasty QIN is where the Europeans took the name CHINA from, so it is read as CHIN not as KIN.... the info about this tomb of the emperor and the terracotta warriors is found in the "Book of Annals" written by Sima Qian.. around 100yrs after the fall of the Qin dynasty. Sima Qian is a historian of the succeeding dynasty, the Han. Han is where the Han Cinese come from.... yw

One suggestion for your pronunciation in Chinese "q": It is actually read as "ch". Try it on the name of the first emperor "qin shi huang" or city "chong qin". You would be very close. 😁
@@NaickKim you are welcome. I figured out you already knew how to pronounce "x" because you read Xi An correctly. Yes it is read as "sh". People don't understand you expect Nihao, or xiexie, that's probably because of intonation. The four intonations in Chinese are very important and confusing. Different intonations for the same pronunciation means totally different things. For example, "ma" first intonation means mother, second means numb, third means horse, fourth means scold or verbally abuse. So it's complicated.... Just listen to others and keep trying. As a non native English speaker I struggled too. I still remember the first time I asked to buy some tomatoes in USA with a British accent. No one understood me. Later I found out intonation is actually more important than pronunciation for local people to understand.
Thank you for the tips. The 'ma', example is very funny haha. If you say it wrong, you call your mother a horse hahaha. 'My horse is a really good cook'. It our language, which it Dutch, 'ma' also means mother. I agree it is not easy to pronounce a new language correctly. A lot of languages have different sounds, that do not exist in other languages, so it is difficult to learn them.
What we have noticed though, is that people pronounce xiexie differently in Shanghai, Xi'an and Beijing. In some area's they same more 'sh' and in some area's it is more like 'ks' or 'tsj'. Is this a local variation?
@@NaickKim You are from Dutch. Welcome! Yes. every place has its dialect. My hometown is Suzhou next to Shanghai, so our dialects are close but different. General speaking, the northern dialects are more close to Mandarin, and the southern dialects have more variety. I could not understand people in guangdong or Fujian province if people talk in their dialects. The good thing is that (1) the written language is the same (2) most people especially young generation all speak Mandarin
Xi'an is the ancient capital of the Thirteen dynasties! It is also the hometown of President Xi Jinping! I am from Xi'an, I welcome you! Welcome people from all over the world to visit Xi'an! I wish you a happy journey!

thanks Shantamoy! you're right about the shakiness and it bothered us so much editing afterward haha. we normally always use our gimbal but here it was so difficult with the crowds since we could barely squeeze ourselves through, let alone with the gimbal. it's back in the next video though :)
Yes, I understood. It's already difficult to get your camera into the crowd. Gimbal is other the next level. But, the footage looks good. Do you take the video in log mode and then grade it? Cause I see a lot of emphasis in some colours. Looks nice though.
@@shantamoyguha4138 our camera doesn't have an actual log mode but it does have something similar where both contrast and saturation of the footage are kept really low in-camera and then we color grade it ourselves afterwards. so yes, we always shoot manual in a 'flatter' profile and then color grade it ourselves :) we're still working on finding our own style there!
Hi Dan, the part about being buried alive is true but I can't tell you if they were generally treated well and paid. I would imagine so, but those are not usually parts of the story intriguing enough to survive the centuries I guess :)

I guess those covered areas in pit two are also under some kind of maintenance, first time there, I was amazed
Yes I guess so! It is really amazing!
Haha, Xi'an is my hometown. You may just follow the advice of the tour guide to play. There are still many interesting and beautiful places you have never been to. If you come to Xi'an next time, I will take you there
Thanks a lot! We'll let you know when we are in the neighbourhood!
Thanks for the tip on Luoyang.
i just went there back in August...totally worth it...
it's Xi-An....two words....pronounce more like C-An
Agree! Thanks for the tip.
Xi, the same with the family name of Chinese president Xi Jinping
And president Xi’s family is also from same province. People there call him Xi DaDa.
DaDa means dad
@@juneping03 Mostly, DaDa in Shaanxi province means uncle.
@@zoxoz9743
my mom called her dad as DaDa...means father. and we also address our uncles on dad's side as Ba...Ba, 2Ba, 3Ba....hahaha...
Qin = name of the dynasty
Shi = first
Huangdi = ruler/emperor
Qin Shi Huangdi =the first emperor of Qin dynasty
QIN is where the Europeans took the name CHINA from, so it is read as CHIN not as KIN....
the info about this tomb of the emperor and the terracotta warriors is found in the "Book of Annals" written by Sima Qian..
around 100yrs after the fall of the Qin dynasty.
Sima Qian is a historian of the succeeding dynasty, the Han.
Han is where the Han Cinese come from....

Chinese citizens reserve online Alipay or WeChat scanner their phone 📱 to buy the ticket 🎫! Avoid standing in line!
How to do that?
It's true! But you need to have a chinese bank account so we can't do it. Naick tried every possible way of getting WeChat but no chinese bank account = no WeChat. I think he's still not over it 😉
Very impressive. And the food hmmmm. 😃😃😃
Yes the food in Xi'an is soooooo good! 😍👌🏻
Please may I know the hotel u stayed which is so conveniently located? Tqvm
9:12 there is a restaurant with yellow signboard called 马尔里, a really famous restaurant in Xi'an for Muslim sticky beef soup
Thanks for the info! We'll look into it for next time!
You guys make me really homesick. I wanna go back to China, go back home straight away after watching your clips. By the way, I’m from Qingdao, Shandong~ ❤️

Glad you found it useful Martin! Don't skip the Muslim Quarter for a good lunch if you can ;)

How much were tickets
How was it?
@@MrRondeezzee we hired a guide.. 1000¥ for 2 people...with ticket
@@NaickKim boring... not worth it.. too crowded and can barely see warriors.. its just too far
One suggestion for your pronunciation in Chinese "q": It is actually read as "ch". Try it on the name of the first emperor "qin shi huang" or city "chong qin". You would be very close. 😁
Thanks a lot! We didn't know that. We tried to learn a few words, but outside of Ni Hao or Xièxiè, nobody understand a word of what we say.
We didn't know it was the home of the president. Great to know. We really enjoyed Xi'an a lot.
Ha ha, welcome to Shaanxi again! Shaanxi has a long history of more than 5000 years! It's a great city! The birthplace of Chinese culture! Thank you for loving my hometown!
Another fantastic and informative video... This time the footage looks a bit shaky... I saw a Gimbal in one of your train video.
thanks Shantamoy! you're right about the shakiness and it bothered us so much editing afterward haha. we normally always use our gimbal but here it was so difficult with the crowds since we could barely squeeze ourselves through, let alone with the gimbal. it's back in the next video though :)
@@NaickKim That makes more sense. I got the idea that the footages are grade. Great.
How much are tickets 🎟?
Because pit 2 has not been excavated, most of the terra cotta warriors are still beneath the earth right under the dirt like logs you saw.
I have been there three times👍
Wow, amazing! Did you also visit the other sites around the area?
Wonderful video! Thank you guys! I only discovered recently the profound islamic influence in northern China. Truly fascinating!
Thanks for watching :)
Audio guide is strong recomanded.
We tried to do our own research to save money, but yes an audio guide would be handy 😁
I thought the leading theory was artisans who died during work were buried there, but generally, they were well treated and paid?
Hi Dan, the part about being buried alive is true but I can't tell you if they were generally treated well and paid. I would imagine so, but those are not usually parts of the story intriguing enough to survive the centuries I guess :)
@@NaickKim thanks. I just researched a bit more. It seems I've messed up my recollection with Egypt's pyramids. I found a number estimate of more than 100 thousand people, including artisans and concubines, even his own sons were buried alive by command of his successor.
Yes it's a pretty gruesome story indeed. Have you visited?
@@NaickKim nope. I don't travel much. Some really like the change of pace of living. Perhaps I'll change my mind in the future though. I do, however, like watching all sorts of things on TH-cam, history, linguistics, science, anything really.

because their skin deteriorate fast , they need to move to safer place
Thanks Michael, maybe that's why they took the warriors out of pit 2. It will remain a mystery for now I guess 😉
