  • Japan has many dialects. The differences are quite large and interesting to listen to even among Japanese. In this video, we tried to say the lines of various anime characters in the three dialects we always speak in our team.

Do kids not learn "standard" Japanese? In schools before the 1990s Swedish kids weren't allowed to speak dialects or other languages, they were basically forced to learn standard Swedish. Sadly this has messed up my local dialect, I still speak it, but I don't know any of the words so it's just standard Swedish with a bit of an accent.

@@joelthorstensson2772 I imagine that like school children around the world Japanese kids are taught the "official" standard version of Japanese in school . However this does not preclude the daily use of the many local/regional street dialects, slang and accents as Shogo and his team demonstrated in his video. To make it even more interesting there are also different versions of written Japanese!

I love listening to these dialects. My wife is from Nagasaki Prefecture and at first was shy about teaching me words and phrases in her dialect, then Sakamichi no Apollon came out. Some characters speak in Sasebo-ben and since then she became more open about teaching it to me and has been happy to share it. My Japanese teacher at the time, who was from Sasebo, was adamant about me not learning dialect because she felt it was embarrassing to speak.

I lived in Aomori prefecture for about six years. When I was in the south people said I talked like a farmer, immediately recognizing I was from up north, often exactly where.
In the United States that might be rude depending on who says it but I never got that sense in Japan. More just surprise that I had a less typical accent for foreigners.

It's interesting learning about this. Is it fair to say that japanese dialects tend to change the grammatical structures, and sometimes the pitch, but the pronunciation doesn't seem to radically change?
In the UK I think it's kind of the opposite. Grammar rarely changes, but the pronunciation can differ wildly. Both countries seem to have their own regional words though.

My grandmother ( my mom's mom ) was born in Hiroshima. She also had cousins who lived in Beppu prefecture and Osaka. Having visited Japan twice in the 80s, I don't recall any of her family using the specific dialects whenever they spoke, so I'm assuming they only spoke in the standard Tokyo dialect and I was studying Japanese in high school at that time, I could understand some of the basic words and phrases. Ever since my grandmother passed away, I can't speak a lick of Japanese now even if my life depended on it. I also was a big fan of the Hokuto No Ken ( Fist of the Northstar ) anime series.

Loved this video hearing your dialects! Would love to see a video on some more like Tsugaru-ben which sounds like a foreign language to me, or the Ryukyu languages.

I would also be interested in different culture habits or so. Like, I heard in Kyoto you should leave the place, when offered tea.

I'm half Japanese half Romanian, and I grew up (and continue to live) in Romania. I still grew up connected to Japanese culture, but only so much. I'm glad for channels like these that show aspects of Japanese culture. It makes me feel a little closer to Japan.

Joji has a Kansia dialect way of speaking Japanese it’s so funny as it’s what a lot of comedians in Japan speak in as there are a lot of comedians from Osaka apparently.

man this is blowing my mind, I'm realizing there's a whole spectrum of dialects I've been hearing in all my japanese media all these years- I thought there would only be a few! japan fits in my state and we only have like 2 accents in one dialect!

I find the word 'anata' for 'you' very interesting, because in Arabic the word for you is 'anta/anti' and in coptic it is 'nto (pronounced en-tah).

In Indonesian, exists a very similar word "anda" which also means "you" though we would only really use it for very formal settings

all of our languages evolved and branched from an origin. as long as your language is along the same main branch as another language, you will find these similarities.

@@darkiepoo8949 right, but those families are so far removed that any non-loan word similarities is surprising.

I first recognized another dialect when I was watching Himouto! And we got to see a flashback of Ebina-chan with her family and Akita and her speaking an Akita dialect. And I thought it was the most beautiful accent I've ever heard. Was surprised to find out it's treated like southern accents are here and seen as hillbilly or hick despite how nice it sounds. Once I become fluent in Japanese it would be fun to try and learn that dialect.
