Definitely something I will use . There's always argument for many other aspects of the more expensive lens but for the majority and in good light most will never have a clue
Cheers great explanations just ordered the 180-600 z I am looking forward to using the light room upgrade more been testing mine with the z 105 and samyang 135. . . Thanks for your effort.
Like most things .. everything has its place. This will be a new tool in my box! Will it replace my urge to buy the Plena ... right now, I'm saying no. I will use it more to see if I can perfect it. My test will be to shoot a normal 135mm image with a shallow DOF (2.8), use this blurring feature, and see what responses it gets from people who wouldn't know if I mixed in with other Plena pictures. Great demonstration.
Yes, that would be the way to do it. I have found that when I am shooting portraits professionally, the client likes to look at the images, either at the end of the shoot or as we go, basically ASAP. It would be hard to try to explain .."The background will all soft and out of focus and you will stand out more and that background won't be a distraction..." But for images that you have time to work on, I think the Lens Blur feature has a lot of promise. Thanks for watching.
I'll take the Plena lens over the endless editing. The masking was pretty bad on several examples. No way I am spending that much time fine tuning the masks and blur. The best example was the apple with small point lights in the background. It did a nice job of increasing the bokeh.
Yep, not perfect. Unfortunately, as a professional, time is money. When you are dealing with hundreds or thousands of images, taking this much time to edit is unreasonable. However, for most people, having an editing solution to make up for the lens they don't own, is pretty cool.
IMHO it's best to get familiar with the techniques now, but not at the prices Adobe wants you to pay (they certainly aren't saving me $2500 with the cloud subscription). Computational effects are going to continue to improve and broaden in scope quickly and Adobe will be leading the charge but I'll hold out for a buy-it-once solution.
Since Lightroom is available for about $10 per month, it would take about 20 years to make up the cost of a new, high end lens like the Plena. However, it's not for everyone and I would bet that On One and other softwares will come out with something similar.
Ha, me too. I like the instant look of the soft background on all my images, rather than going through each one. However, it's cool feature for the "from time to time" needs.
I plan to do an export video very soon, but for now, just right click on the image and hit export. From there you need to make sure every drop down menu is addressed. The video is coming soon.
@@tv510 I'm on an extremely tight budget. My most modern camera is a Nikon D600. Everything I own is used, bought from KEH or MPB. Thank you, mirrorless buyers. The price of DSLRs and used lenses has plummeted to where I can afford photography again. Mirrorless is way out of reach for me. I enjoy portraiture, and bokeh is very important, so haviong this option in post processing is great. Thanks for sharing!
1. the tech will only get better 2. anyone complaining on masking...it takes 2 seconds to mask in photoshop, especially with the new ai features. id say at this point, go for a nice body but skimp on the lenses
I don't know, I really like the prime lenses for the instant feedback, but for most hobbyists you're probably right. Save the money to pay for travel to places to fun to shoot.
Thanks for the video - hate that fake DOF, it’s been around on iPhone/android devices for a while - a lot of your examples look like a cut-out - they do not look like they 'belong' to the background anymore - probably because of very little or no fall-off - so fake, gimme a fast lens for the win every time. Adobe is great at releasing half-baked features and leaving them half-baked (those masks are unacceptable for professional work) - look at content-aware fill in photoshop it’s a joke.
...And there you have one of the reasons I own fast lenses myself. I think the lens blur feature in Lightroom Classic has its place for people without a professional income but want to get a similar look and for those who are looking for the effect after the shoot. Thanks for watching.
I understand that for truly professional work for companies this doesn't cut it. It probably wouldn't cut it for real portrait photography or wedding photography. HOWEVER. It is a truly game changing tool for social media images taken with smartphones. On instagram many of the imperfections you noticed disappear and you can mke posts stand out a lot more and look professional. My wife is a travel photographer and we've been in situations where we simply did not have the time to whip out her Canon R5 and put on the prime lens. We have had tons of photos that were taken with a smartphone instead, and no matter how much incredible editing you put into a smartphone photo and increase the resolution, that "flat" look gives it away immediately. Adding a tasteful amount of lens blur has truly elevated those photos.
Definitely something I will use . There's always argument for many other aspects of the more expensive lens but for the majority and in good light most will never have a clue
Exactly. This is made for the masse but I'm sure I will use it from time to time myself.

Thanks for the tutorial! I'm new to lightroom and noticed this new feature.
Yeah, it's pretty cool. I try to keep and eye on the new developments in software. Thanks for watching.
Thx, Terry. Will give the Blur option a try. I actually enjoy the editing process…I know…weird! 😊
Yeah Bev, there are times I really look forward to the editing part, when I have time. Thanks for watching.
One of the best tutorials on this feature. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Colin, I appreciate you watching.
Excellent video, answers some of my needs to approximate medium format on a crop sensor camera. Bravo!
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful and so encouraging. Your ability to explain how to get the most from the new features is impressive and much appreciated. Many thanks.
Glad it was helpful Brian. Thanks for watching.
Loving the new blur tool, but I would enjoy your plena review.
Great, I'll start working on it, it's fun to shoot with so far.
very nice Terry .very informative and easy to understand !!
That’s what I’m shooting for. Thanks for watching.

Yea it is but it can be correct as well, who wants to spend money on something that can be fixed in post.
You are an amazing teacher !! ❤
Thank you! 😃 I appreciate you watching.
Nice to see you Terry 👍
Thanks 👍 and thanks for watching.
Excellent Video, Terry 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can Adobe Photoshop CC do this as well ??? I dont use Light Room even though I pay for it every Month
Yes, Photoshop has this same feature. A bit more work to use, but it's there in the newest version.

One thing the 135 provided on that last image was nice bokeh. I see there is a bokeh setting in the blur component. how well does it work?
Hi Anton, it does a decent job with Bokeh but not as good as a high end lens. One of the trade offs.
Thanks, Terry!@@tv510 Great channel.
Nice feature. I know my bank account sure got blurred out after purchasing the RF 85 1.2 😮
Ha, me too. I like the instant look of the soft background on all my images, rather than going through each one. However, it's cool feature for the "from time to time" needs.
Great 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
thanks for the clarification that this feature sucks and it's not worth upgrading to the new lightroom 😄
Ha! thanks for watching.
How do you export it so it saves with the picture as when I try it it just sends ou the edited pic nothing the one with the blur?
I plan to do an export video very soon, but for now, just right click on the image and hit export. From there you need to make sure every drop down menu is addressed. The video is coming soon.
@@tv510would love to see that video. Could you tag me when its made?
Plena lens loading.... I never saw the sharpness etc of that lens. Please wait a little longer next times.
Will do, I'll probably do a breakdown on the Plena lens in the future.
@@tv510 thanxx
Wow, must be nice to have a $2500 lens sent to you for free. Where do I sign up?
Ha, sign me up! I pay for all my own equipment with my own money. It keeps the reviews honest.

I figure most people would do the same. Thanks for watching.
Mmmmmn donuts. catadioptric bokeh.
Thanks for watching Homer!
