    In all of the Korean restaurants I've been to they served the potato salad with apples in them and I thought it was delicious! So I looked up the recipe and it's actually called "Korean Style Potato Salad", not American. Americans aren't very hyped about putting fruit in their potatoes. :/

      My Korean mother makes it occasionally for family reunions. I think it's an old modern recipe from her generation. I always love eating it.

    That potato salad with Apple is not American....

    • @Silentgrace11
      @Silentgrace11 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Skinnydips Maybe she was referring to the distinct flavor? The typical, overwhelmingly mustardy potato salad is very much an American strongsuit ^^"

    • @usagifelton
      @usagifelton 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Silentgrace11 I don't think so, the potato salad wasn't even orange which it would have been had it had loads of mustard. She was referring to the apple, which is most defiantly NOT American. I've never had potato salad with an apple in it, and don't plan to either.

    • @Silentgrace11
      @Silentgrace11 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usagi Felton You'd be surprised, actually. I've basically given up on expecting mayonnaise potato salad when I'm at events and such. At least around here, many store-bought ones have built up a ratio where they can have super mustardy potato salad while it still looks pale, and it wouldn't surprise me if there are home methods to do it too (I wouldn't know. I just use my great-grandmothers mayonnaise salad recipe). All that aside, I honestly don't know if apple is common or not. I think I've seen it at restaurants once or twice, but it was at a passing glance and I don't know if it was an international special or not. I wonder what it adds to the recipe. Additional texture, perhaps? Or maybe sweetness...I don't think it needs anymore sweetness, but we also use homemade sweet pickles and that does the job nicely ^^"

    The fact that Martina says Man-Doo instead of Mahn-Doo makes me cringe, especially when she's talking about how different the "American" mandu is compared to Korean mandu.
    Unless she's joking about the pronunciation, then it's totally cool.

      Sarah Squared So are lots of other Korean words, but if you're speaking to people in English then you sound pretentious if you over pronounce everything. It's not a matter of difficulty, but of accessibility, and keeping the conversation going.

    • @sarahsquared518
      @sarahsquared518 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Eat Your Kimchi
      But you're not over pronouncing it? Like if you say doenjang jjigae, that is usually a harder word for Americans or any person who isn't a native Korean speaker to pronounce. And I get that. You shouldn't have to over pronounce words if it's just making it harder for all of the people listening. But, in my opinion, if you're already making the effort of judging Korean food in LA compared to food in Korea, it would make sense to pronounce words that are easy to pronounce the way they are supposed to be pronounced?
      I still enjoy all of your videos regardless of how you pronounce things haha but it is just an opinion I have.

    The thing about the spam is that in America it carries a slight stigma of being low class food. If served spam in a restaurant, besides those specializing in it, I believe most Americans, and myself included, would feel skimped and offended.

    • @aileean941
      @aileean941 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      got2many You should go to Hong Kong style cafes then, they serve spam for breakfast. Does American restaurants not serve spam?

      +I ship It I can't say spam is completely ruled out BUT most non-Asian people I know think spam is nasty. The only people I know that like spam in fact are Asian people. I suppose there might still be spam served in Asian restaurants but yeah, it is not that popular compared to Asia. For example, the Denny's menu doesn't serve spam AT ALL, the closest thing I can find is ham. Source: Hong Kong Chinese living in Canada.

    The reason the pork tastes different here is because in order to satisfy the health nut crowd, U.S. farmers started breeding leaner pigs with less fat, thus cursing the nation with less flavorful pork. If you want what pork used to taste like here, go to a place that uses pork from heritage breeds of pigs. Makes all the difference in the world.

    although i found the comparisons interesting i dont think its fair to comment on the "legitimacy" of korean food in LA. i grew up in LA and have spent many summers in korea so i can share my opinions on the differences of the foods. in LA, korean food is often prepared traditionally however since we live in such a cultured and diverse city it allows cooks to be free with preparing meals. its the same food, but different recipe. how else are these restaurants ganna compete with each other. the bibimbap that you had is very unique but i can assure you that if you walk into any other korean restaurant they will make it how its usually made (with carrots, bean sprouts etc). i think just going to one restaurant out of the dozens in LA wasnt doing LA korean food any justice. of course im not holding this against you but i want people watching this video to look down on LA korean food
    also im ganna point out that korean food in LA has become its own culture, a culture that is specific only to LA. korean bbq has become a trendy and popular food amongst non koreans and even in korea korean bbq has become adopted. you will find that some restaurants in korea will specify "LA style korean bbq" on the menu versus the traditional korean style.
    it is not that korean food in LA isnt legit. its not really all that comparable anymore since its evolved into something different
    i hope this made sense i know my thoughts are all jumbled. ive never posted a comment on youtube but this topic really had my mind going

      +Sky Kim I agree. Also, in a 2.5 mile radius, Koreatown packs a gigantic number of Korean restaurants. Some are known for their banchan, some are known for their fish dishes, naengmyun (like Yu Chun Chic which I thought was just OK), some in BBQ, some in traditional Korean, some in the "royal banquet" style, etc. etc. etc. 3 restaurants, one of which is a global chain, one of which I think is terrible after drinking food, is not a fair sample

      I agree and it's difficult if they're comparing it to one particular dish at one particular restaurant in Korea. Even among restaurants in Korea I'm sure different restaurants have slightly different tastes for the same dish. They're not all carbon copies of each other. It seems kind of unfair to be judging based on how "close it to" one at a particular restaurant in Korea.

    • @dot5483
      @dot5483 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sky Kim As long as it's not evolved to cater to non-Korean tastebuds, it's legit. Can't say the same for American Chinese food. Not hating here, I'm Chinese.

    I appreciate the little cheap joints that introduce you to foreign foods. For me, it was the 16th Street food court in Denver, Colorado that had a little Korean food stall. Really good and inexpensive dishes like bulgogi (grilled marinated beef) and galbi (marinated beef or pork short ribs) that got me interested in other Korean dishes like Korean-style twice fried chicken (KFC!) and their wildly spicy ramyeon instant noodles.

    the apple in potato salad is a norm for many Korean people. I'm Korean, and every time I had potato salad from a Korean person it was sweeter, had apples in it or another fruit or vegetable (cucumber, orange slices, pear, sometimes even sweet potato noodles chopped up). I don't think that's "American" because most American style potato salad tastes very different either heavily mayo based or mustard based.

    my school cafeteria in Korea served that kind of potato salad all the time..sometimes it was apple, sometimes it was corn. It was usually served on the 'Western' food days (along with the crazy sweet spaghetti), so I think it's a Korean person's attempt at Western food. So it's totally Korean..but Korean-style Western food

I've had the thing they are eating at Korean restaurants in the States before...but only at Korean restaurants and doesnt taste like American potato salad either. Anyway Korean fusions cuisine is where its at, its a shame they didnt get a chance to check out any Korean Taco trucks..or just plain old Korean Fried chicken. Also there should be a rule against Canadians saying 'Merica.

    Heyyy!!! Any OTHER random Korean food place in K-Town, even low end, has the type of dolsot bibimbap Martina described. I'm sorry you both got that weird hot-rice-bowl experience like that. My only guess is that the ajummas at Hodori typically have non-Koreans pick out the bean sprouts and namul even if the customer expresses interest in Korean cuisine so they prepped for "western" preference. - - As for the potato salad, that is actually common in Korean cuisine. My mom always made hers with tons of apples like that since she was a little girl in Korea. So long as there was mayo in Korea (probably a recipe introduced by U.S.) there was potato salad.

    I live near Washington DC and there are restaraunts here that are pretty legit. After coming back from Korea, there are subtle differences like how the restaraunts here in my area have more salt on their foods and they DO have that confusing potato salad I never ever touch (I hate potato salad). Ive also brought my friends from Korea to different places here and they said the only thing that is different is that its saltier which I could agree with because North America uses a lot of salt. Come and try the food here! :D

    Cryin rn BCD is such the basic Korean Chain restaurant. There are so many more better places, but some of the most authentic places aren't as popular. There's a place called Jang Mo Gip (장모집) and actually they're known for their kimchi which is sold at many grocery stores. But their food is one of the top most authentic food you can get.
    Also, you're in LA. In the USA. It's all about that all you can eat kbbq. I'd suggest Gen, good quality meat right there.

  • @josephk7530

    Korean-Americans tend to prefer Korean American food. The Korean BBQ is much better in LA, especially the Kalbi. I don't like Pork so couldn't tell you about the Pork Belly. Recently got back from Seoul and the food is really good but a bit too spicy. My mother who was born in Seoul agrees. Yes she has lived more than half her life in the states now so her tastes may have changed a bit also. Nangmyun and Mandoo is much better in Korea.
