- We go all the way back to 1988 to trace the origin of Nintendo's sole internal development studio for its American branch. Then we assess its launch title for the GameCube, Wave Race Blue Storm. Is it a hot new cutting edge title? or just a reskin of the last systems tech demo? Find out in Episode 4 of ChronCube

Just discovered your channel and really enjoying this very well researched content. I didn't actually realise that the small GC disk size reduced loading time!
I love this game but I definitely see your points especially because the controls aren't as tight as the N64 version. Great research on the lead-up too, I find it really interesting that they apparently had access to the original's code.
I still to this day have never played a Wave Race game in my life. I need to fix this
Nice video dude. Was searching for something like this
I dont get it how people expect a jetski game to be that different from the previews jetski game ? Better phydics , graphics and more tracks is more than enough to justify its existence . I d be more than happy to buy a true sequel to waverace for Switch with even better graphics and physics and more tracks
your making some good vids fam
Call me insane but I still think the N64 game looks better. I haven't seen yet a game with a color palette as delicious as that one.
Didn’t know the founder of DigiPen leads NST. Neat! Definitely subscribing.
Blue Storm has a lot more content than the original. You don't need to play the tracks in order and you select them based on weather conditions. On top of that, every track will have massive differences in each championship. Also, the turbo feature changes quite a lot the gameplay and adds a bit of strategy. And the reviews of the game were not weak by any means. 32/40 on Famitsu, 8 on Eurogamer, 8.5 on GameInformer, 9.2 on IGN, 4/5 on GamePro, 8.5 on GameSpot... You just selected the magazines with the lower scores to support you point.
Is it a game with lots of content that will keep you playing for 100h? No... Just a reskin of Wave Race 64, a tech demo? C'mon, dude...
I see your point. I agree I was too harsh with my judgement on this one. When I learned during research that NST started with a source code port of the N64 original and that there was a lack of altogether new levels I definitely zeroed in on the idea of it being a remake of the original. I can't say I would consider this game a sequel or a proper follow up. But if I'm taking your point correctly it's certainly different enough that its more of a remake/remaster in the vein of the recent Resident Evil 2/3/4s that are heavily based on the originals but still different enough to be a new experience. I should have also limited my point about reviews and reception to just being about Nintendo Power, I just specifically thought it was interesting that NP gave this game lower scores than the other Nintendo backed launch titles. Going back to some of my earliest episodes I certainly see lots of things I'd like to re-do, mostly video production wise. But if I get the chance eventually to remake any of my earlier work I'll certainly go back and rebalance my take on things like this. I've tried since to be more neutral on the content/quality of games as I'm mostly interested in telling the story/context of the game and then just present what that game is as the conclusion to that story. I'm gunna change the title of the video to be less harsh. Would you be alright if I pinned your comment as a second opinion to my original script? It definitely makes the case for the game very well. Also thanks for not calling me names and being outright mean (it's happened). I do appreciate the good faith counterpoint. 👍
I never quite 'got' the Wave Race games on the N64 or the Gamecube, but i've friends who swore by both of them. It was definitely a selling point for both consoles as there weren't many games quite like it being advertised so prominently.
Miyamoto's absence unfortunately shows on Blue Storm.
Poor colliction detection, not as good playcontrol as Wave Race 64 and completely useless odd variations of the same tracks.
Turbo? Why? Game's structure fights agains turbo. Just try to use it on canals-track and you get the idea.
-Racing on wast giant ocean without landscapes would had been awesome with turbo instead.
-Honestly, if they would had only 6-8 tracks, without inferior variations, and each track would only had locked weather condition, based on that what actually woud fit/work best for certain track.
-Then this would be better game.
It would be polished without flaws.
So, almost ironically, simply re-make would likely had been better, but Blue Storm is still pretty good.
