This was actually really interesting because it was a novel problem you couldn't fix so easily. You were able to figure out the limits of the problem and you basically have a really good idea about the culprit, but could also be still wrong. Intriguing indeed. If it was just a totally unknown situation of not even able to turn the controller on, it would be far less interesting.
Those appear to be two patch antennas by design (can't see other side of the board to confirm). What you have may be a 1T2R configuration: 1 transmit, 2 receive. So the faulty path is one of the receives which would explain why your reception suffers. Wireless reception is influenced by the square of the distance you are from the source (electrical engineers are taught this in first year). You were on the right track looking at the components in the receive chain. Take your soldering iron and rotate any of the inline or shunt caps in the RF signal path and see if they crack. A common but hard to spot issue with 0402 caps is cracking when installed by the pick 'n place machine. If they are damaged, then replace as required. A hairline fracture is hard to see but easy to find as the part will literally crumble when you apply heat. You can swap in the other daughter card and isolate the fault to the radio module or the side with the antennas. Most likely on the radio module side. The extra steps will confirm.
Heh, must be a non-European person then. Over here EVERY part of the device has to be covered by the standard 24-month warranty. Or, the seller broke the controller and knew that warranty doesn't cover it, like chucking it across the room, or giving it liquid damage.
@@SuperSpyMonkey Doesn't hurt to try though. I sent my PS4 Pro to Sony two years after warranty expired and I had even opened it so the warranty stickers were slightly peeled off and they still sent me a fixed console for free. All I had to do was provide proof of purchase. Same with an original PS4 controller I had bought used on eBay! I sent them the eBay receipt and they still accepted it and sent me a new controller, I think I just had to pay shipping on that one. So I would always give the manufacturer a try first, especially with a device so new and with an issue that doesn't seem like there was any tampering done.
reminds me of adrian's digital basement. This tantilum capacitor is bad. When they fail they stink like crazy. He then removes it. And THEN HE BLOWS IT ANYWAY!!!! Then he's like man it stinks. lmao

Hi @TronicsFix, Maybe the antenna is shorted with the shielding. If thats the case then it might worth checking continuity between the antenna and its shielding (It could cause a short to one of the powersupply rails).
@@Tronicsfix They both could be broken in some way, but only one antenna output prevents from booting. It may be worth checking also the other board or even connector itself.

Hey man, i gotta tell you, iwatched nearly 8Hours of your Videos in the past 3 days after first discovering you. Your Videos are so good and so damn interesting, that i really want to start repair stuff. Love you and your vids :)
Did you ever find a solution to this? I have the same issue. If I disconnect the wire it works for up to 20 feet though. It’s not a huge deal, just curious.
If one can easily get piles of broken PS5 controllers, but finding a single broken Series X controller is noteworthy, that definitely speaks a lot on their respective quality.
Not super surprising. The Series X controllers are near identical to the Xbox One controllers making them the 3rd (?) revision of the same controller. The Dualsense is basically in field testing at this point in it's life.
Oh wow that's really a weird problem. If the chip was the problem then the controller would not function at all i guess. Maybe the other wire has a bent in it or just a faulty cable... who knows. Great video again steve 👍🏻 can't wait for the broken PS5 video's
Well you might be able just to connect just a long wire that could work as an antena. Fixed this issue on my nintendo switch which had the same problem. I just took an old laptop antena, cut it to size and vola.
I hope a bunch of broken Xbox series X controllers break so we can get the “I bought 15 broken Xbox series x controllers” video can be a thing, great video man
I ordered your driver kit, can't wait to try to get back into the repair game. I have not touched a PCB in years but I was a Quality control inspector and ran a solder wave years ago, wish me luck... I was curious where to get my parts now that there is no radio shack :p
Hey friend , I realize that the anthena cable its the problem !!! I had the same problem and just replace the anthena cable from an xbox one s controller and working now!!! Try it and come back with the news!!! Regards from Mexico!!!
Not much to add, just want to comment that the perfume smell suggests to me something was spilled on it or it burned out and they tried to cover up the smell. It's also possible they sanitized it with some sort of scented wipes, but it's usually not that strong, especially after a long period of time.
Why was there a color difference in the PCB where the reflowed chip sat on the non/kinda/sorta working controller and the known good test controller? Just seemed odd like so ething had become rather warmish. Great vid, thanks for the ride along!
Hi can u help me... I have an Xbox one controller and I dropped it so the analogue stick snapped and the other small half of it is stuck in the thumbstick. Is there a way I can fix it by joining it back
Change the big Mainboard from the good working one with this one and connect the Wire. Maybe the Antennacable is making any Short/Circuit that it doesnt have to do normally
bruh those new grip plates are so hard to get off! it's worth it though because they fit a lot nicer than the old style and don't creak / shift around like they did before. (had to remove one of mine because the trigger was sticking due to the foam pad being placed incorrectly in the factory) overall, i think it's a big improvement over the previous ONE S controller.
When I built my new computer I started it out as a pile of components with no case. When I put it in the case, I forgot the antenna (which is just externally connected to a port in the back of the motherboard. It freaking worked!!! I was still getting high speed internet without an antenna. I was shocked.
I have same problem, but also when connected to that antenna socket bord with chip becomes warm and start to smell. At least i can use it wired now. BTW warranty is full year but because these controller does not sell officially here (Ukraine) i had to import it from Poland and warranty return is only available from supported countries (When i type my Ukraine address nothing happens, but if i type my Poland shopping address it proceed to send it with UPS to Austria. Because UPS is also overpriced in Ukraine it's cheaper to just buy another one). By the way it's aqua shift model. Front mold manufactured in February 2021 and back mold is from July 2021.
Did you measure the impedance of the antenna on that side of the known good controller from the cable , seems to me the only thing that could cause a condition like that would be some kind of problem on the antenna side, else why would unplugging it remove the fault ? I know you checked with the other side , but are you sure they are both the same ?

Did you try some of the components on the cord of The other board the part where it's soldered into there could be a component that went bad there that could be shorting it where it is not working
@TronicsFix if you notice the antennas are soldered to the other half of the board. I’m guessing it’s so they can use an area of the PCB as a bigger antenna. Try desoldering the one that’s causing the controller to not turn on and then plug it into the antenna port by doing this you should be able to see if it’s a issue with grounding on the soldered part of the antenna. Since these are the same antenna styles used by smartphones, computers, etc. I think that the chip is fine but there’s a short in the antenna wire when it’s soldered to the other pcb.
