This video helps me decide to buy a 2022 3 series to avoid this abomination. Car manufactures should stop integrating so many functions into a stupid screen, it only makes it harder for us to access. Bigger screens work on phones because you are not trying to use them while maneuvering a vehicle.
I’m in the market for a new car and absolutely love everything about the 330i’s except for this. The UI looks like something in you’d find in a Toyota… very android and not BMW’s personalized iDrive system. Very disappointed. Not to mention the fact that there are no more climate control and seat ventilation buttons.
330i's will still have ID7 untill the LCI comes out. I can say that unlike toyota's UI BMW's certainly actually works when you use voice control, but 100% agreed that i think the switch to all digital climate controls was the wrong move
Is it possible to access the Climate Menu using the command dial/controller? ie. Bump down on the dial to get to the climate menu/controls to bypass using the touchscreen. Or is it only accessible via touchscreen only?
This would have been fine if BMW kept the numbered preset buttons. This is going to be a nightmare trying to find things. I had a pre-LCI M3 on order but it got switched to the LCI M3 so unfortunately cancelled the order and went with CT5-V Blackwing
Afaik you can’t turn it completely off in any OS8 car! I mean I’m sure M cars will still allow that but all these cars allow is the “drive off assist”, which is the “traction” mode in old cars.
Deepest of apologies. I was mistaken, you can't change the onboard map to be day or night only, it's set to auto and auto only... only Apple Carplay maps can be preset to be dark, likewise with google.

Initially got excited for this system but now after watching a while I must agree with other comments. Lack of buttons is a bad move. It's really annoying actually to dig into system for basic functions. I had a X5 G05 which I swapped for a Porsche 911/ then for Macan S and even with with futuristic display above I still look forward to coming back to BMW. Porsche system is rubbish / illogical / without function continuity. I'm assuming X5 LCI will get that but hoping there will be buttons left.
I was seriously considering ordering an M240i, until I saw this. iDrive 7 struck the perfect tech balance for me, but I can't get on board with this super wide tablet.
i actually agree, especially for the price point. BUT if you think of it from a logistics standpoint it makes more sense to go digital for basically everything. more things on screen mean less buttons to make, which makes the car simpler and cheaper to make, and adds fuctionality over time that otherwise can't be done with hardbuttons that are one function only. After all it's cheaper to make code for a climate function, copy and paste said code to 3 million cars than it is to make the 15 button equivalent, plus rocker pieces for each button, plus button it self, which all work through the initial coding anyway to operate a climate function... then take into account that those same 15 buttons plus mechanisms for say 3 million cars means you're manufacturing/buying/outsourcing 90 million parts just for a basic function and that's not factoring price in it as well, a cheap price of $1.30 for the electronics, gears switches and all can be upwars of 117 Million dollars in parts... and that's JUST the climate control. Now again logistically, if you can dump say 40k into a good coder to make the code and design the climate control functions, now you're talking about a 40k single time purchase that saves $116,960,000 just by switching from mechanical to digital controls. Expand that over an entire model range, countless countries and markets and you have better scaling available for you and your product.

Then get rid of all these different types of the same car. 4 series gran coupe? Just get a 3 series. Wasnt that how it originally was, 3 series was a compact sedan and 4 series a coupe? Now bmw has 4 doors for practically every model lineup
I don't understand what happened at BMW... One day you produce the E39 M5 and the next this... Why do I need 3 million apps and options on my infotainment, this looks super complicated when stopped, imagine if you were driving... I swear every new car ditched what mattered in a car in favor of technology... Don't get me wrong the video is great but I don't like this idrive one bit from styling and looks all the way to complexity.
the car company didn't change... peoples expectations did, and with technology moving as fast as it is having a modular platform that allows for over the air updates keeps the tech relevant as time goes on, keeping the older style buttons is ok to a point, but when more than half your users overwhelmingly use voice and touch screen to do their navigating the system vs the idrive controller and hard buttons then yes you will switch to what the majority uses. same reason Manual trans are going away, because unfortunately people decided an auto is better and didn't buy manual.
especially with the head up display! the amount of info you need in front of you is limited, basic trip date, speed, directions and charge/distance till empty is really all you need... there's no engine to monitor like an ICE car... and even with ICE cars you no longer have manual trans outside of the M3/4... so no need for a tach even...
@@BMWofFW Not really. The 2022 M3 is spectacular. But the driver/machine interface is SO important and this interface ruins what was already beautifully integrated. I’ll keep my M340 xdrive with idrive7. I was considering an M3….. but this genuinely has me reconsidering.

Horrible layout and graphics. I just heard that they will install it on the M240i as well. Unfortunately I ordered mine 4 weeks ago and apparently it will come with Idrive 8. I'm actually trying to cancel my order, I hope BMW will understand the disappointment and accept my cancellation request. I used to love BMW, but this poorly executed Tesla me-too is unacceptable
Really? it seems the most plausible evolution of iDrive 7 to me... the main thing being that most of the options were just apps anway in the system, just layed out differently, so that made perfect sense in the transition to idrive 8.

Damn idrive 8 is such a step backwards from 7. This looks more like the crappy Merc system. Idrive 7 had the perfect mix of hard buttons and software. And I also hate the seat toggles being on the door, again like Merc. Ugly buttons you press one time then program into memory and forget they exist. Why do they need to be up next to the door handle you use everyday. Makes absolutely no sense. BMW shouldn't pander to idiot Merc drivers who need seat buttons under their nose. And the drive select button is meh, even worse then the nubbin in my 992 911. But by far the most offensive change is the lazy design of just sticking a big ugly looking ipad on the dash. Even worse then Mercs poor attempt at the same thing. Idrive 7 integrate the screens in nice sporty bezels and a cluster gauge that reduces glare while having a classic gauge look. This is hideous, lazy, looks like cost savings gone wrong. Massive step backwards BMW! Shame!
all fine and dandy when sitting in a parking lot. try hitting a button while driving with road imperfections and not looking at the screen... going from comfort to sport or any other center console functions requires you to make multiple button pushes and taking your eye off the road. Graphics/tiles are rather childish looking. I will not be buying a bmw with the idrive 8. The idrive 7 in my current 3 series is great

Honestly, this is a downgrade from iDrive 7. Now you have to go thru every menu all the time instead of saving to 1-8. This is no different than scrolling thru your phone while driving at this point, big distraction. Thought I would be bummed missing out on the new system but 7 is just better
You can still save hot keys, they’re just digital, more importantly you can have your 2 fingers forward or 505 gestures when equipped go to a feature instead of just being nav based.
This is TERRIBLE. 8 shortcuts are gone. Climate control buttons are gone. Heated seats and ventilated seat buttons are gone and are now in iDrive. WILL NOT BUY A BMW again until this crap is fixed!!!
I dig it. If they didn't do this everybody would say BMW's tech is dated and behind the competition. Just wish they had kept the climate control knobs. There's gonna be a lot of fingers prints on the bottom edge of the screen. Glad they kept the iDrive rotary knob although I noticed they took it away in the X1.
that's mainly because of the setup in the smaller ID8 screen... since the main one is so long it's actually harder for the driver to reach the far side so keeping the idrive controller made more sense, where as the same one in 12.8 in setup is within the standard arm length so it wasn't needed anymore... you'll see the same in the Euro 2 series active tourer.

The big screen is too tacky for me personally. iDrive 7 was the perfect mix of technology and usability with the buttons and physical controls

as of right now it's only accessible via touch screen (always available at the bottom of the screen) or via voice.

presets are still there, just in a pull down in the screen with extended capabilities. But enjoy your blackwing!
How do you turn the esp system COMPLETELY off? When you have it normal off, you can still feel the car working against you

yes... go to map, right side find map settings, you can default it to night mode instead of day or auto.

luckily you dont have to dig... climate controls are always on the bottom and voice control is top knotch
climate is for temp only, vent speed etc is still hidden in layer 2 and 3...@@BMWofFW

main screen is fine it’s the driver display that’s bad with the layouts, colors, and shapes

Awful. Idrive 7 was perfect and nicely integrated. This is enough to put me off an M3.

You can make a shortcut button I’ll make it much easier or simply use your voice and say activate sport mode

Keep in mind too they're leaving room for OTA Updates to add video options like those found in the upcoming 7 series 8K display.
