    I’ve been using prores raw and the issues you mentioned about time remaining is because prores raw is a variable bitrate and it displays the worst case scenario, the seconds then count down relevant to the actual bitrate. If you’re shooting a detailed scene with lots of movement you get less recording time. So its not something that can really be fixed, maybe just explained. Really useful video 😁

    Prores raw would be especially good if Sony allowed open gate so we could use the entire sensor when shooting video... Most people don't realize that we're all losing resolution on the vertical which would allow us more crop options in post as well as using a 2X anamorphic lens if we wanted.

    1:57 A better way to let us compare is to have labeled footage, one after the other, and have a JUMP CUT between them, so we can use the frame forward/backward keys on our keyboards (comma and period keys) to toggle between them in an instant. Not taking time between transitions is more important the more subtle the difference is.
    I really like what looks like increased sharpness in the RAW versions, but retaining it after NR will be key.
    Great video, BTW! To the point and answers exactly the questions we have!

    I mainly bought my 'Ninja V' (Arriving Friday) as a monitor and as a cheaper, long term storage when compared to SD cards.
    What I might do, is use PreRes RAW and do a shoot in S-Log3, as I still think S-Log3 isn't great on the a7s iii when compared to the fs7 and other bigger Sony cameras.

    I just got the fx3 with atomos ninja v mainly to shoot in lowlight because this the the "LOWLIGHT KING". It`s not. I`ve had a bmpcc4k before and the color science is better in bmpcc and the 1250 iso (the second native) is similar to 12800 on sony but 99% less noisier (slog 3 or prores raw). The only advantages on the sony are as follows : the focus is great great great, the internal stabilization is good (much better if you shoot slog3, not in prores raw because you got also the steadyshot option), more battery life bla bla bla. My advice is as follows. DONT SHOOT PRORES RAW (NORMAL OR HQ) because you cannot get rid of the noise (even if you are properly exposing). If you use DaVinci(dont use prores rawbecause you cannot see the footage) IF YOU HAVE A ATI VIDEO CARD PRORES RAW IS NOT WORKING BECAUSE APPLE POLICY. So. Buy the FX3, Take an atomos ninja v second hand,(cheaper thanbuying cards and also you have a great external monitor) shoot only on slog3 with stabilization active DONT SHOOT IN 12800 iso in lowlight(is crap), NEVER shoot prores raw because you get more noise and artefacts in the midtones than in shadows (doesnt matter if you expose perfectly from 0,7 to 2,0). No one from the internet are saying what is true (just 25-30 %of the problems). So sony is not the LOWLIGHT KING!!! Not at this time

      Anyone could shoot differently by a couple of reasons, main of those for me: 1. I'm fond of davinci resolve and Prores Raw forces me to use stupid workarounds with converting which consume additional time and storage space; 2. you have no noise reduction and lens correction, and if you can easily deal with former, you can have a headache with latter as you usually should manually mess with geometry sliders and its a pain.

    I think what these camera manufacturers need to address is what we still need to include 'processing' wise in camera. Clearly, we want to be able to shoot RAW but still get the lens distortion correction and the noise reduction. With Blackmagic BRAW at least, we have a choice of quality settings that can reduce files sizes. I have the BMD Video Assist 12G because my PC just struggles so bad with Long GOP 10-Bit files. And transcoding takes forever. BRAW scrubs like butter but then having to apply lens correction and noise reduction makes it redundant IMHO as they are two of the most computationally intensive processes you can do in Davinci Resolve. So I will be using the "DNx 10-Bit 422" options on the recorder. I'll get the smooth editing, the dynamic range will be the same, and I'll still get the lens correction and noise reduction in-camera. Another nice 'option' would be if the camera manufacturers would maybe give us DNx/ProRes "14bit 422" or even "12bit 422" as well as RAW/BRAW. Just if anyone from BMD or Panasonic is listening.

    • @Yodd
      @Yodd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually the noise reduction in camera is a bad thing unless you are not going to do any post processing which would defeat the purpose of using raw. But the post noise reduction like neat video is much better than the in camera one, especially in high iso.

  • @Ariel_emerald
    @Ariel_emerald 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    my main interest in the ninja V is being able to control the amount of noise in the image rather than being forced to use sony's noise reduction, as phillip bloom showed in his review you can use post software like neat video to clean up the noise spectacularly but it doesnt work well with the internal noise reduction. Anyways thanks for this video, started watching your channel and i love your videos.

    RAW recording is absolutely necessary if you're looking for the best possible IQ, as you are able to control the noise yourself on your computer, and get much better results than the A7siii's internal denoiser.
    However, if IQ is not necessary, then obviously internal recording is fine.

You don’t need to worry about the gain of the recorded audio. All details can simply be adjusted in post-production, significantly reducing pre-shoot preparation time. Recorded too low?

    What is more ridiculous that LOG 8bit is using reduced saturation in camera to allow room for changing it in post. The format has a fixed PSNR, so the lower chroma is recorded, the lower the quality will be, the more blocky and lower in precision it will be, and the worse it will look when you raise it in post. If you want good saturation with high chroma precision, you have to get it in camera.
    The same applies to reduced sharpness.
    The only advantage of LOG is the raised shadows. Those are recorded with better quality because they are recorded higher. You will be extending the midrange if you want to reduce them in post though, and the midrange is usually more important.
    If you get the look in camera, congratulations. You have optimized the compression and overall image quality, by processing the image in the highest precision representation it will ever have, and you will do less in the lower precision representations that will follow

    Now that ISO metadata is supported for prores raw from atomos ninja, could prores raw technically recover overly exposed shots by lowering the ISO in final cut pro x?

    • @NOlimitsON
      @NOlimitsON  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you have room for it, for instance you shot at ISO 2000 and overexposed strongly - than yes, you'll be able to recover the highlights, at least in theory, I need to check it on my FCP, but if you shot during midday with iso 100 f1,4 and 1/50 shutter with no ND filter on - the data will be unrecoverable for sure

    • @aristotle_4532
      @aristotle_4532 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Highlight recovery is a myth. If it reaches full scale, it's full scale, it's lost. Cameras allow 3-5 stops of exposure over the subject, but that's normal dynamic range that is required to cover a normal scene, not room for error. Shooting at extremely flat lighting and claiming there is such a thing as highlight recovery for 3-4 stops is ridiculous.
      There is a type of recovery that works. The one using the area the cameras use to clip all three channels into white without the partially clipped false color look. But that is minimal and looks bad. It's practically useless.
      There is no such thing as shadow recovery either. If you have a high dynamic range and a format with high PSNR (or RAW), you can boost shadows and raise noise at the same time. That is not recovery, it's merely a change in exposure after the actual exposure, using an exposure that did not fit the scene, with all the disadvantages.
      Long story short, exposure is critical if you want to get the best image quality. Highlight recovery is impossible. Boosting shadows has noise cost.
