Before this video I was thinking about using it but now I see that it’s mainly for editing purposes and it does not increase any quality really if everything is exposed perfectly. Very happy with this because it makes me feel less like I’m missing out on the quality!
It is insane how they allowed raw in motion picture. The advancement today man I swear. I love shooting raw photography because of the flexibility in editing.
coming back to this because my gh5s just got the update to support prores raw (via an external recorder) so, thanks man, you kee on helping us more and more
Apple, Panasonic and Atomos ! Benefits With ProRes RAW, you can import, edit, and grade video with RAW data straight from your camera sensor - without slowing down your edit. ProRes RAW also provides maximum flexibility for adjusting the look of your video while extending brightness and shadows.
I hope PRR gets a wider distribution of cameras. As it stands I do not have any of the cameras listed, nor do I plan to buy or rent them. Still, very exciting. Nice "intro" video. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. And to answer a question you asked - I am one who really enjoys a series that digs deeper with each installment. More quality info, less flash and theatrics (which is why I subbed this channel). Thank you for your efforts.
I've been shooting DIY and social type videos for 20 years and I have heard of ProRes and "I shoot RAW" and I never knew it captured a range of ISO an other stuff - now with your video I finally understand the benefits and how it is possible in post to recover blown out images but also the file sizes are beyond my wildest imagination! You did a better job than h.264 at compressing the complexity of this codec while still retaining a usable final product.
Well that explains it. Clearly I was at NAB 2018 in Vegas and they talked about the black magic Cinema pocket camera .... And it’s ability to produce videos and photos in ProRes and your video pretty much a clarifies what that means💥👏👏👏👏👏👏 good job 👍👍👍👍🌟💫💥🚀thank you very much .... now let’s move onto your next video here we go 123
As a Nikon shooter and FCPX user the news by Atmos that Prores Raw will be available from the Z cameras is very exciting. But I'm still unclear if it will be practical to use. Another video I've just watched on the subject suggests that using FCPX it is.
Thanks Caleb. You are a great help.. I am about the buy the BMPCC 4K when it comes on the matket and play around with the Codecs. I am years behind you in knowledge.
Caleb! This video was fantastic. You did a perfect job of explaining everything! I look forward to your other videos! If possible I’d love to see a comparison of red raw, cinema DNG, and ProResRaw in highlight recovery and color/exposure correcting in general.
This is fantastic. I have FS700 and Atomos Shogun inferno, but unfortunately only Windows computers. Which software is suitable, that I can edit it on Windows too?
Excellent presentation! And thank you for the clarification on Pro-res. I've heard of it but never really understood it or it's benefits. So again thank you and looking forward to more learning. You are officially my sensei. 👍
Hey Caleb, love your videos, very helpful and informative as always! If I may suggest a small correction: When there are numbers after the decimal point (33.33), you say thirty three point three three, not thirty three point thirty three.
I just recorded a 10 second clip in DCI 4K on the C200 using Canon RAW lite just to compare with your data and the file size was 1.2GB which is almost identical to ProRes RAW? For some reason I thought ProRes RAW was supposed to be a lot more efficient, am I missing something?
Harris Entertainment I'm trying to figure that out myself. With Canon RAW lite there's no transcoding involved either, you literally can drop it onto the timeline and start editing. It also works on Adobe Premiere, FCPX and Davinci Resolve. The same can't be said about ProRes RAW. Yes, Canon RAW Lite is proprietary to Canon just like Redcode RAW is to RED but compressing RAW video isn't something new and ProRes RAW is no different so not understanding all the hype around it like Apple invented it (typical Apple).
The issue I see and this is with any new codec that's introduced is the support from NLE's. It took Adobe over 1 year to support Canon RAW lite after hundreds of thousands of users slamming their support forums to get it updated. As of right now FCPX is the ONLY NLE that supports ProRes RAW, so until others jump on board (if they even do) it's not ready for prime time.
Excellent job, it included many things i needed to know about "Proress Raw". But is there any problem for windows-base system users? Cause it's coperated with apple is there any problem for people like me who use windows or we necessarily need Mac system?
according to my mathematic count it is 2 tb for hour - so we comeback to the cost of pellicula or films Rolls - about to the smooth in projects inside video softers I prefear to make proxy files and they works very smooth inside the projects - I liked your descripions about raw video files - You have a very smart mind and thanks to share because we need to know and your tutorial help a lot - 1732 thumb up is mine - you make us to understand what we really need and what we don't so thank again .
Caleb, can you please make it a point to mention that Prores RAW is only smaller than LOSSLESS compressed cDNG? It has roughly the same file sizes as lossy compressed cDNG which is a better comparison considering Prores RAW is lossy, too.
I would like to know what your thinking about the Blackmagic RAW versus the ProRes RAW ! Blackmagic RAW seem to be just amazing from what everyone is saying... I love the idea of lower CPU requirement, single file, separate custom file, multiple bitrate and variable bitrate... Only issue I see is it called Blackmagic RAW... I would have called it something non specific to a brand, Like Blackmagic NexRaw so other vendor can specify just NexRaw codec ... They might hurt them to get it adopted by other vendors... They make Camera AND Editing software...
I heard Resolve doesn’t even recognize Prores Raw and now there are TH-cam videos talking about converting to Cinema DNG in order to import it into Reolve. 🙄. Yet many Streaming platforms are requesting Prores file.
Does the need for ProRes change if you have hardware acceleration? I have Nvidia RTX 2070s on my Windows 10 system and use Premiere Pro. Would I benefit from ProRes? Second question. Is Raw in video like Raw in photos where it is a readout from the sensor, and associated exposure and other sensor data from the camera, but no in-camera processing of the sensor values?
. I know braw can’t be used in Final Cut Pro x but can pro res ? That’s what stopping me from getting the bmpc4k and does the black magic allow you to shoot 4K 60fps pro res ?

Caleb's camera guides are some of the best value for money I've ever spent. Just incase anyone is on the fence.

1:28 to skip the intro.

coming back to this because my gh5s just got the update to support prores raw (via an external recorder)
so, thanks man, you kee on helping us more and more
ProRes Raw User : screw checking exposure, we do that in post now
One thing I always love about your videos is how clear your audio is man💯🔥👌🏿
Another super explanation of a complex topic. Thanks for all the work creating one of the best channels on TH-cam.
Aw shucks! Thanks RB. Means a lot!
Apple, Panasonic and Atomos !
Benefits
With ProRes RAW, you can import, edit, and grade video with RAW data straight from your camera sensor - without slowing down your edit. ProRes RAW also provides maximum flexibility for adjusting the look of your video while extending brightness and shadows.
Sony has the best autofocus in old file formats, well behind Apple, Panasonic and Atomos !
I thought; if this takes two parts I’m probably not going to get understand it! But you are the first to break it down for us layman pretty darn well!
Such a good video bro. It’s gonna help so many people.
Yeah excellent overview. Although, I'll probably just keep using Fuji so this is somewhat irrelevant lol. But still interesting info!
You got my subscription! These things can be so complex for a newbie like me, thank you for this explanation!
Coming to this video after upgrading to Nikon Z6III that can shoot ProRes RAW internally.
Thanks dude!
Always my official Go-to guy!
Thank you so much!!! I just wanted to learn more about ProRes Raw.
Waiting for next parts.
Thanks again :)
Around 4:18 really nice demo of the benefits of pro res raw
Awesome video Caleb! Looking forward to the next one.

Wow! So nice! Some day ill shoot in ProRes Raw! i cant wait for the other videos! ♥
Best wishes from Argentina mate!

Love the series based guides Caleb. Keep it up!
Always helpful!! This video really helped me get my head around what could be a pretty difficult to understand topic. Keep up the awesome work!
Beautiful breakdown! Simple enough even I understood it! Yay! :)
Caleb, thanks so much for breaking that down! Very clear, practical, and understandable.
Priceless information. Thanks so much Caleb.
Great video Caleb!
That was mind blowing and eye opening thank you.. I need a cam that can shoot Pro Res Raw
Awesome job! Great introduction to Prores RAW.
Thanks!!!
Thanks Caleb excellent and informative, as usual
Great video and super informative! Looking forward to the next vid in the series 👍🎥
Thanks BDV!

WWOOOOOOOOOOOW THIS IS SUPER HELPFUL!!! LETS GOOO
So sick! Here bc Nikon Z6 can finally record ProRes raw externally so trying to learn what’s up with that. Too helpful! Going to watch the others.
Thanks Caleb. You are a great help.. I am about the buy the BMPCC 4K when it comes on the matket and play around with the Codecs. I am years behind you in knowledge.
I'm late to the party but this is awesome thanks Caleb!
Caleb! This video was fantastic. You did a perfect job of explaining everything! I look forward to your other videos!

Really looking forward to the rest of this series. Thanks for breaking things down in such an approachable way! :)
you deserve more subscribers.
This is great! Super helpful and really clear, thanks for this. and stoked on this 3 part series
also, as with others watching, hoping your next video explains how to Prores RAW with the GH5.
This is fantastic. I have FS700 and Atomos Shogun inferno, but unfortunately only Windows computers. Which software is suitable, that I can edit it on Windows too?
Great, just great! Hard stuff, explained perfectly, I thank you, Sir!
Great Video ! Thanks for the Info Caleb !
Super clear, really useful video. Thanks.
Great video! Nice content on your channel
Excellent presentation! And thank you for the clarification on Pro-res. I've heard of it but never really understood it or it's benefits. So again thank you and looking forward to more learning. You are officially my sensei. 👍
Thank you! Tried to make codecs as simple as possible. Glad it made sense!
Just subbed, I plan on getting a bmpc6k. I am very very new to this stuff, and this is helpful.
This was incredibly helpful for the complete lay - thank you
That’s really interesting!! I was curious about raw and prores raw. Going to see the next one, thanks ✌🏻
So much value!! Thankyou🙌
Thanks for the video! Very helpful!!
always you give us great informations and cool advices, thank you man :D
Hey Caleb, love your videos, very helpful and informative as always! If I may suggest a small correction: When there are numbers after the decimal point (33.33), you say thirty three point three three, not thirty three point thirty three.
Your presentation skills are so good. Great information. Thank you!
Hi Caleb.. really helpful video.pls do one video on A7 iii

Yes, Canon RAW Lite is proprietary to Canon just like Redcode RAW is to RED but compressing RAW video isn't something new and ProRes RAW is no different so not understanding all the hype around it like Apple invented it (typical Apple).
The difference is editing performance.
I've had no performance issues editing Canon RAW lite video on just about any machine. But maybe if you're on a really slow PC?
The issue I see and this is with any new codec that's introduced is the support from NLE's. It took Adobe over 1 year to support Canon RAW lite after hundreds of thousands of users slamming their support forums to get it updated. As of right now FCPX is the ONLY NLE that supports ProRes RAW, so until others jump on board (if they even do) it's not ready for prime time.
"Resolve and DaVinci"? There is one product: Davinci Resolve (in free and paid Studio versions), FYI. :)
Really informative! Thank you. Please make more learning series like this :)
just awesome! Did´nt know what more to say....ohh yeah and Subscribed
Excellent job, it included many things i needed to know about "Proress Raw". But is there any problem for windows-base system users? Cause it's coperated with apple is there any problem for people like me who use windows or we necessarily need Mac system?
Thanks for this overview! I’m excited to try it myself.
Thanks for the series mate, hoping to see ProRes Raw support on BMD cameras. What hardware is the hackintosh you mention in this video?
Do you have a guide for the Canon 7D Mark II?
Great overview, I'm looking forward to the next video, cheers!
great!finally about prores RAW!
Thank you SO much for this knowledge dissemination! Onto the next part(s)!
an importing dng workflow video would be fire bro!
Ooo would also love a tutorial about this lighting set up!
according to my mathematic count it is 2 tb for hour - so we comeback to the cost of pellicula or films Rolls - about to the smooth in projects inside video softers I prefear to make proxy files and they works very smooth inside the projects - I liked your descripions about raw video files - You have a very smart mind and thanks to share because we need to know and your tutorial help a lot - 1732 thumb up is mine - you make us to understand what we really need and what we don't so thank again .
Can't wait for next one
Please include a7iii in compatibility talks for the next video, thanks!
i came for the software but im really for the hardware, the deep dive, very raw if ya know my meaning
Thanks so much for making these videos !!!!!
Caleb can we get a video on the Viltrox EF-M2 please?
Great Video dude thanks a lot Gonna use this info with my new cannon 700ff can't wait out channel is going to benefit from this info
Caleb, can you please make it a point to mention that Prores RAW is only smaller than LOSSLESS compressed cDNG? It has roughly the same file sizes as lossy compressed cDNG which is a better comparison considering Prores RAW is lossy, too.

Are ProRes codecs exclusive to .mov container or are they available on other containers as well?
I Want the part 2 right now Caleb 😁
Tomorrow my friend!
Well explained 👌 Great job
hi, nice video, quick question, can I edit raw prores in davinci?
Super helpfull video, more of these would be great ❤
GREAT EXPLANATION!
Nice! Great video 🎥
Amazing stuff, this has pushed me into acquiring the Fs5ii paired with the Shogun. Looking forward to watching the rest.
I heard Resolve doesn’t even recognize Prores Raw and now there are TH-cam videos talking about converting to Cinema DNG in order to import it into Reolve. 🙄. Yet many Streaming platforms are requesting Prores file.
Awesome! Thank you for this information.
Those horribly blown out videos make me laugh every time. Great video!
what's your post work flow for barrel distortion and noise reduction when shooting raw?
I'm very interested in this and I just subscribed.
Very well done!!
Does the need for ProRes change if you have hardware acceleration? I have Nvidia RTX 2070s on my Windows 10 system and use Premiere Pro. Would I benefit from ProRes? Second question. Hi, does bit rate matter when using prores raw? I understand the nikon z6 ii maxs out at 8 bit when shooting 4k raw, and 10 bit at 4k 30 fps.
Thus is very valuable info, thank you!
Cheers, Pete
I was really hoping you’d make a video on this.. then.. BLAM! Thanks, dude!
What is the standard frame rate of video file?
Hey, i have iphone 11 and i want to make travel videos, withc format should I shoot h264 or HEVC ???
Thank you so much for creating this informative video, I learned a lot of it
. I know braw can’t be used in Final Cut Pro x but can pro res ? That’s what stopping me from getting the bmpc4k and does the black magic allow you to shoot 4K 60fps pro res ?
