    Before this video I was thinking about using it but now I see that it’s mainly for editing purposes and it does not increase any quality really if everything is exposed perfectly. Very happy with this because it makes me feel less like I’m missing out on the quality!

    I hope PRR gets a wider distribution of cameras. As it stands I do not have any of the cameras listed, nor do I plan to buy or rent them. Still, very exciting. Nice "intro" video. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. And to answer a question you asked - I am one who really enjoys a series that digs deeper with each installment. More quality info, less flash and theatrics (which is why I subbed this channel). Thank you for your efforts.

  • @MaxoticsTV
    @MaxoticsTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I shouldn't have watched this ;) There is nothing "new" about what ProRes can deliver. For years, one could get it in DNxHD or motion JPEG, etc. What makes H.264 difficult to edit is it does forward and backward compression; that is, it tries to not duplicate data using temporal tricks. This is great when you're forward streaming only (viewing), but it is a problem when you scrub backwards (editing) because the computer has to re-assemble each frame by looking forward and backward--it's so CPU intensive it can crash your PC! The less you do this, and use CODECs like ProRes, the easier it is on the computer. However, a computer with a slow hard drive will also struggle with ProRes because it has MORE data. Indeed, the only reason ProRes is beginning to make inroads has nothing to do with the cameras, but faster SD cards and computer drives. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy there are faster SD cards, cameras and PCs to make ProRes usable, but one should understand why. There is no magic CODEC software here. Quite the contrary, it is XAVC that is the advanced CODEC! Your viewers who get the impression that this new technology will work on their existing equipment may be very disappointed!
    For starters, you should have said someone needs powerful memory and computing, even for ProRes RAW.
    On the RAW part. If you don't explain how RAW records single color pixel and typical video combine at least 3 of those pixels into a full color pixel then don't bother! The achilles heal of RAW, like H.264, is that in editing (and viewing!) it requires the computer to come up with those full-color pixels in real time. That is, it has to blend a red, green and blue pixel together (2 million pixels 24 times a second in 1080). Again, strains the CPU! Yes, size is an issue, but not as much as you'd think. A Blackmagic generally records 12-bits per pixel in RAW. H.264, or 8-bit, needs 24 bits per pixel, so RAW is actually HALF the pixel data size as H.264. But again, the problem is that the data is "RAW" in the sense that you need the data combined into full-color to make is usable.
    When one thinks about it, they think, "hey, I'll just convert my RAW into full-color so the computer doesn't have to strain". Okay that give you 36 bits vs 24-bits in Blackmagic. ProRes works hard to compress that without too much temporal tricks, but it's still a LOT OF DATA!
    There is NO SIMPLE way to explain this stuff. One doesn't need to know it. But if you are going to teach it, and spend 4 videos doing it, start with the fundamentals that will serve your viewers forever! Don't gloss over these technical aspects. If one doesn't understand the difference between H.264 and ProRes, or any 24-bit full color video and sensor RAW, then this stuff will only get them into trouble. My 2-cents.

    I just recorded a 10 second clip in DCI 4K on the C200 using Canon RAW lite just to compare with your data and the file size was 1.2GB which is almost identical to ProRes RAW? For some reason I thought ProRes RAW was supposed to be a lot more efficient, am I missing something?

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Harris Entertainment I'm trying to figure that out myself. With Canon RAW lite there's no transcoding involved either, you literally can drop it onto the timeline and start editing. It also works on Adobe Premiere, FCPX and Davinci Resolve. The same can't be said about ProRes RAW. Yes, Canon RAW Lite is proprietary to Canon just like Redcode RAW is to RED but compressing RAW video isn't something new and ProRes RAW is no different so not understanding all the hype around it like Apple invented it (typical Apple).

    • @brunodinizovelha1675

    • @imacg5
      @imacg5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Armando Ferreira Armando Ferreira I think ProRes RAW acts more as a common denominator - all brands of cameras can support it internally besides their own RAW format. The other such open format is Adobe’s CinemaDNG, which is why DSLRVS kept bringing it up in the video.
      Each brand of camera has their own RAW algorithm to achieve similar results (balance between file size and flexibility), the problem is they may not be able to edit directly (in RAW mode) in NLE (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Hitfilm Express, Vegas, etc.), you may have to convert the brand-specific RAW file into some editing format, resulting in either larger file or loss of flexibility. This is where ProRes RAW come in handy.
      In conclusion, the efficiency of ProRes RAW on file size is relative to other open standards (such as CinemaDNG). When compared to brand-specific RAW formats(such as Canon RAW), the advantage of ProRes RAW is its “openness”.

    • @imacg5
      @imacg5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Harris Entertainment From what I learn, you can either shoot lossy 3:1 CinemaDNG which has good enough quality but only supported by Resolve and DaVinci, or lossless CinemaDNG supported by more NLEs (including Adobe Premiere).

    I would like to know what your thinking about the Blackmagic RAW versus the ProRes RAW ! Blackmagic RAW seem to be just amazing from what everyone is saying... I love the idea of lower CPU requirement, single file, separate custom file, multiple bitrate and variable bitrate... Only issue I see is it called Blackmagic RAW... I would have called it something non specific to a brand, Like Blackmagic NexRaw so other vendor can specify just NexRaw codec ... They might hurt them to get it adopted by other vendors... They make Camera AND Editing software...

    Hello, how are you? I hope you're well...
    you know recently the panasonic s1h camera launched its option to record in raw prores. So since I have windows on my pc, I downloaded this version that you mentioned, and the add-on from the Apple site. But the video doesn't work properly, it doesn't play well, when you hit play the image is choppy in a terrible way. What do you think could be happening?
    I updated the drivers of my Nvidia rtx 2080 super video card. I have 32gb of ram, an intel i9 9900 k processor. And I have a solid high-speed drive.What do you think might be going on? I also checked to see if I am correctly using the CUDA rendering option. But nothing has worked. Everything works actually, I can even export the videos in another format, but it doesn't play it, or it plays it but in a terrible way and in between cuts, as if it was going back and forth all the time, shaking. Thanks for any information you can give me. Or if you know who I should contact to solve this problem. I know that the recorded video is not the problem because I put another video file in raw prores recorded by another camera and the same thing happens.

    What about converting ProRed RAW into CinemaDNG so it can be Color Graded in DaVinci instead of FCPX (which doesn’t have a clean, consistent workflow for Nikon/Ninja)
    Question: I converted a short ProRes RAW clip to CinemaDNG (on my MacBook Pro running Monterey 12) that was shot on my Nikon Z6 that I want to Color Grade in DaVinci (which I have yet to installed on my new ProArt laptop (running under System 11)
    The output is _000001 thru _000299.dng files - each 8.4MB - so are they meta-files that are imported into Resolve as a “group”??? If not, what’s the next step in processing this - single - video clip?

    Hold the phone...there are only like 2 or 3 cameras that can output true RAW. Most cameras like the GH5 and FS700 can output Log which can recorded to ProRes Raw but it is not actually Raw. The white balance and ISO are actually baked in with Log. To use the Atomos Inferno, you need a camera that can output Log in order to benefit from the better color grading options. This video is confusing or it's not entirely accurate in how you paint the picture of what ProRes Raw actually is and how you demonstrate it. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't having a Log output limit eliminate actually recording in true Raw?

    I think just shooting log on a well exposed shot is all you really need. Lets be honest the real benefits to having RAW is that you can change exposure and white balance, but if you correct these while you're shooting, which you should be doing, you honestly could lose the headache of raw. Its a personal belief, that yes you should give yourself room in post to color correct/grade but at the same time this idea that you should correct everything in post is crazy. Now I understand theres certain shooting conditions where yes it might benefit to have RAW but for a well lit shot with proper balance why not just shoot log?

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's also the fact that it opens gamma curves not originally accessible. For example. The c200 can only monitor log using Clog3, but you can take it to post and set it to clog2 and get the full 15 stops.
      Another example would be the GH5s which currently can only shoot vlogL which maxes out at 12 stops. If Raw was accessible it could use full Vlog and be able to use the full 14 stops. We know it has 14 stops due to the HLG codec.

    I assume it would help to "save" shots that are darkly lit to make them more viewable, correct?

    I hope that apple release tools to convert raw x to prores raw, then there was a real reason to work with it. But at today nothing.
    In 2005 I could that with cineformraw which was a real game changer. At today prores raw had weak of common raw not strong point of raw. How many color correction software pro support developing of prores raw? Unfortunately Is a doa prj

    question... you mention that for some people, their workflow involves taking h.264 video and transcoding it into ProRes. I had always assumed that once something has been compressed as h.264 then information was permanently tossed out to make that compression ( much like a jpeg in still photography ) and so it would not actually help to change it to another codec and would in fact just degrade it further, since you can't add back information that isn't there... or is that not the case? Thanks Caleb.

    Quick question: do you think the GH5 will ever be updated to output ProRes Raw? Also, you made a complex topic very clear! Thanks for the insights, can't wait for the next one.

    Well that explains it. Clearly I was at NAB 2018 in Vegas and they talked about the black magic Cinema pocket camera .... And it’s ability to produce videos and photos in ProRes and your video pretty much a clarifies what that means💥👏👏👏👏👏👏 good job 👍👍👍👍🌟💫💥🚀thank you very much .... now let’s move onto your next video here we go 123

    Great stuff, man. Kind of wish I went with the Shogun Inferno instead of Ninja Inferno now, but I don't have a RAW-compatible camera anyway!

    As a Nikon shooter and FCPX user the news by Atmos that Prores Raw will be available from the Z cameras is very exciting. But I'm still unclear if it will be practical to use. Another video I've just watched on the subject suggests that using FCPX it is.
